Background: Burnout, depression, and anxiety are increasingly recognized as common among health care providers. Risks for these conditions are exacerbated in low-resource settings by excessive workload, high disease burden, resource shortage, and stigma against mental health issues. Based on discussions and requests to learn more about burnout during the Vital Anaesthesia Simulation Training (VAST), our team developed VAST Wellbeing, a 1-day course for health care providers in low-resource settings to recognize and mitigate burnout and to promote personal and professional well-being.

Article Synopsis
  • Hyperglycemia in acute ischemic stroke negatively impacts treatment effectiveness and outcomes, leading researchers to explore exenatide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, as a potential alternative.
  • The TEXAIS trial involved 350 patients, comparing the effects of exenatide versus standard care on stroke recovery over a 5-day period, focusing on improvements in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores.
  • Results showed slightly better recovery outcomes in the exenatide group, with no instances of hypoglycemia noted, though the differences were not statistically significant, and recruitment was halted early due to COVID-19 challenges.

Background Up to 15% of patients with cholelithiasis have choledocholithiasis, with almost 10% not detected pre-operatively. Our study aims to quantify the prevalence of incidental choledocholithiasis during routine intra-operative cholangiogram (IOC), identify the best management pathway, and identify reliable pre-operative factors to predict choledocholithiasis. Methods We conducted a single-centre, retrospective cohort study at St John of God Midland Hospital in Western Australia, Perth, on 880 consecutive patients who underwent cholecystectomies performed by 15 surgeons between January 2, 2020, and December 30, 2021.

The provision of quality healthcare relies on scales and measures with robust evidence of their psychometric properties. Using measurement instruments with poor reliability, validity, or feasibility, or those that are not appropriate for the target diagnostic group or construct/dimension under consideration, may be unfavorable for patients, unproductive, and hinder empirical advancement. Resources from the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) group can assist in identifying and developing psychometrically sound measures.

Visuoperceptual evaluation of fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is a commonly used assessment in dysphagia or swallowing disorders. Currently, no international consensus exists regarding which visuoperceptual measures to use for the analysis of FEES recordings. Moreover, existing visuoperceptual FEES measures are limited by poor and incomplete psychometric data, identifying an urgent need for developing a visuoperceptual measure to interpret FEES recordings.
