  • Robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE) is becoming a popular alternative to traditional surgical methods for treating esophageal cancer, but this study highlights the lack of direct comparisons among all four approaches: RAMIE, laparoscopic minimally invasive esophagectomy (LMIE), hybrid esophagectomy (HE), and open esophagectomy (OE).
  • The analysis included data from seven randomized controlled trials with over 1,000 patients, revealing that OE had the lowest rate of anastomotic leaks, while LMIE exhibited fewer pulmonary and cardiac complications, and RAMIE had the lowest 30-day mortality.
  • Results indicate that while LMIE and RAMIE offer distinct advantages, further research through upcoming randomized controlled trials is needed to

Background: The occurrence of p53 loss of heterozygosity (LOH) is a common genetic event in malignancy. LOH occurs when a heterozygous locus loses one of its two parental alleles, becoming homozygous at that locus, by either copy number loss (CNL-LOH) or by becoming copy number neutral (CNN-LOH). A role for CNL-LOH (cnLOH) has been postulated in cancer aetiology.

Oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) is a poor prognosis cancer with limited response rates to current treatment modalities and has a strong link to obesity. To better elucidate the role of visceral adiposity in this disease state, a full metabolic profile combined with analysis of secreted pro-inflammatory cytokines, metabolites, and lipid profiles were assessed in human ex vivo adipose tissue explants from obese and non-obese OAC patients. These data were then related to extensive clinical data including obesity status, metabolic dysfunction, previous treatment exposure, and tumour regression grades.

Mult Scler Relat Disord

March 2023

Department of Neurology, St James's Hospital, Dublin, Ireland; Academic Unit of Neurology, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Electronic address:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is frequently misdiagnosed based on MRI abnormalities detected in the brain white matter. Cortical lesions have been well described neuropathologically, but remain challenging to detect in clinical practice. Therefore, the ability to detect cortical lesions offers real potential to reduce misdiagnosis.

Background: The primary objective of this study is to evaluate tumor mutational burden (TMB), its associations with selected clinicopathological and molecular characteristics as well as its clinical significance, in a retrospective cohort of surgically resected stage I-II lung adenocarcinomas, subset of the ETOP Lungscape cohort.

Methods: TMB was evaluated on tumor DNA extracted from resected primary lung adenocarcinomas, based on FoundationOne®CDx (F1CDx) genomic profiling, centrally performed at the University Hospital Zurich. The F1CDx test sequences the complete exons of 324 cancer-related genes and detects substitutions, insertions and deletions (indels), copy number alterations and gene rearrangements.

Article Synopsis
  • Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is linked to visceral obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but its prevalence and effects on EAC patients were previously unexplored.
  • A study involving 559 patients revealed that 42% had hepatic steatosis (HS), with HS related to visceral obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes at higher rates compared to non-HS patients.
  • Despite the presence of HS and associated liver conditions, postoperative complications and long-term survival rates (53% for HS vs. 50% for non-HS) were similar, indicating NAFLD has little impact on surgical outcomes for EAC.

Despite efforts from various endoscopy societies, reporting in the field of endoscopy remains extremely heterogeneous. Harmonisation of clinical practice in endoscopy has been highlighted by application of many clinical practice guidelines and standards pertaining to the endoscopic procedures and reporting are underlined. The aim of the proposed "standardised reporting" is to (1) facilitate recognition of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) on initial endoscopy, (2) to enable interdisciplinary decision making for treatment by a multidisciplinary team, (3) to provide a basis for a standardised endoscopic follow-up which allows detection of recurrence or progression reliably, (4) to make endoscopic reports on NEN comparable between different units, and (5) to allow research collaboration between NEN centres in terms of consistency of their endoscopic data.
