Introduction: The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) plays a pivotal role in wrist stability and function. TFCC injuries are a common cause of ulnar-sided wrist pain and distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability, often requiring surgical intervention when conservative treatments fail. This study evaluates the outcomes of open surgical repair of TFCC injuries, with a focus on functional recovery between 6 and 18 months postoperatively.

The emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains caused by the extensive use of antibiotics in the world requires a preventive approach to stop the infection spread, especially in a hospital setting. So, there is a growing demand for materials that can inhibit bacteria growth or have bactericidal effects. In this paper, an inexpensive and durable Cu-containing strontium-modified phosphate glass with a considerable antimicrobial effect is proposed.

Fabry disease (FD) is a rare disorder resulting from a genetic mutation characterized by the accumulation of sphingolipids in various cells throughout the human body, leading to progressive and irreversible organ damage, particularly in males. Genetically-determined deficiency or reduced activity of the enzyme (alpha - Galactosidase; α-Gal) leads to the accumulation of sphingolipids in the lysosomes of various cell types, including the heart, kidneys, skin, eyes, central nervous system, and digestive system, triggering damage, leading to the failure of vital organs, and resulting in progressive disability and premature death. FD diagnostics currently depend on costly and time-intensive genetic tests and enzymatic analysis, often leading to delayed or inaccurate diagnoses, which contribute to rapid disease progression.

Fabry disease (FD) belongs to the group of lysosomal storage diseases (LSD), characterized by insufficient enzyme activity responsible for the intra-lysosomal breakdown of various substrates. The result is an uncontrolled accumulation of by-products of cellular metabolism. Lysosomal storage diseases are inherited and transmitted mainly in an autosomal recessive fashion.

Depression is a known stroke risk factor, but its influence on stroke course depending on gender and age is not clearly defined. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of previously diagnosed depression on early and one-year mortality in patients with acute ischemic stroke (IS) in relation to gender, age, and concomitant diseases. This study was based on the registry created from the public health insurer in Poland (2009-2020).

Background: An increasing number of studies in recent years investigate various dietary and lifestyle patterns and associated breast cancer (BC) risk.

Objectives: This study aimed to comprehensively synthesize and grade the evidence on dietary and lifestyle patterns and BC risk.

Methods: Databases were systematically searched up to 31 March, 2022, for evidence from randomised controlled trials and prospective cohort studies on adherence to a dietary pattern alone or in combination with lifestyle behaviors and incidence of or mortality from primary BC in adult females.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how radiology staff perceives an AI tool designed to expedite lung cancer detection in chest X-rays, surveying staff before and after its implementation.
  • Initial expectations of the AI being time-saving shifted post-implementation to focus on faster patient follow-ups and a recognition of benefits despite integration challenges.
  • Ongoing staff feedback and support are crucial for a smooth AI integration in clinical settings, fostering a positive adaptation towards its usage in patient care.

Managing advanced basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in patients with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome presents unique clinical challenges due to the tumor's aggressive nature and potential for widespread metastasis. This case study details a sequential treatment regimen for a 68-year-old female patient with an extensive, inoperable BCC. Employing a multimodal approach that integrates radiotherapy, the Hedgehog pathway inhibitor vismodegib, and High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), we demonstrate the potential for nearly complete remission in a patient with advanced BCC.

Blood flow through the abdominal aorta and iliac arteries is a crucial area of research in hemodynamics and cardiovascular diseases. To get in to the problem, this study presents detailed analyses of blood flow through the abdominal aorta, together with left and right iliac arteries, under Earth gravity and weightless conditions, both at the rest stage, and during physical activity. The analysis were conducted using ANSYS Fluent software.

A new perspective on aortic pressure for transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus in the pediatric population.

Kardiol Pol

December 2024

Department of Coronary Disease and Heart Failure, Jagiellonian University, Medical College, John Paul II Hospital, Kraków, Poland.

Background: Hemodynamic assessment is not routinely performed when closing a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Significant PDA flow causes a drop in the aortic pressure distal to the shunt. Closure of PDA should increase distal systemic blood flow and significantly elevate distal aortic pressure, changing the systolic pressure gradient (ΔP) between the proximal and distal aorta.

Introduction: The complexity of the associations between religiosity and indicators of well-being suggests the presence of a mediating mechanism. Previous studies indicate that religion may influence subjective well-being because it helps to find meaning and purpose. Therefore, the aim of our study was to examine the mediating role of the presence and search dimensions of meaning in life in the relationship between religious meaning system and life satisfaction in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).

The aim of this study is to evaluate the anticonvulsant potential of schisandrin B, a main ingredient of extracts. Schisandrin B showed anticonvulsant activity in the zebrafish larva pentylenetetrazole acute seizure assay but did not alter seizure thresholds in the intravenous pentylenetetrazole test in mice. Schisandrin B crosses the blood-brain barrier, which we confirmed in our in silico and in vivo analyses; however, the low level of its unbound fraction in the mouse brain tissue may explain the observed lack of anticonvulsant activity.

The aim of this study was to present a methodology for predicting changes in uric acid concentrations in the blood of chronically hemodialyzed patients based on an optical measurement of the intensity of selected wavelengths in the dialysate. Blood samples were taken from the arterial line every 30 min throughout the hemodialysis period, to measure uric acid levels. Simultaneously, optical measurements were made on dialysate flowing from the dialyzer.
