Background: Patients with a displaced fracture of the distal radius are frequently offered surgical fixation. Manipulation of the fracture and moulded plaster casting is an alternative treatment that avoids metal implants, but evidence of its effectiveness is lacking.

Objective: To compare functional outcomes, quality-of-life outcomes, complications and resource use among patients with a dorsally displaced fracture of the distal radius treated with manipulation and surgical fixation with Kirschner wires (K-wires) and those treated with manipulation and moulded cast.

Prior work has shown the utility of using Internet searches to track the incidence of different respiratory illnesses. Similarly, people who suffer from COVID-19 may query for their symptoms prior to accessing the medical system (or in lieu of it). To assist in the UK government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic we analyzed searches for relevant symptoms on the Bing web search engine from users in England to identify areas of the country where unexpected rises in relevant symptom searches occurred.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored whether rotavirus vaccination in the UK could lower the risk of developing coeliac disease (CD) and type 1 diabetes (T1D) in children born between 2010 and 2015.
  • About 39% of the cohort (880,629 children) received the vaccine, and the results indicated no significant protective effect against CD or T1D when comparing vaccinated children to unvaccinated ones.
  • Although the vaccination has greatly improved health outcomes related to diarrheal diseases, it did not demonstrate a connection to preventing CD or T1D in this research.
