New therapeutic approaches for alcohol dependence (AD) include virtual reality (VR)-based treatments offering scalable options for cue exposure (CE), a well-established strategy in cognitive behavioral therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and tolerability of a new VR-CE paradigm. On an explorative basis, factors influencing the induction of craving were examined.

Alcohol consumption (AC) is a leading risk factor for death, morbidity, and disability worldwide. Gender-specific differences in AC and its moderators, which may serve as markers for preventing severe alcohol use disorders (AUD), showed inconsistent results. Additionally, the impact of COVID-19-related lockdowns on these differences remains unclear.

Introduction: Previous assumptions suggested that the technique of approximation without osteotomy in primary exstrophy repair (PER) could only be applied in newborns and anticipated poorer outcomes. Recent studies indicated that this technique can be successfully executed not only in immediate PER but also yields favorable long-term results. Therefore, we evaluated and compared the orthopaedic and radiological long-term outcomes after pubic symphysis approximation without osteotomy in immediate and delayed PER.

Alcohol dependence (AD) and gambling disorder (GD) are common addiction disorders with significant physical and mental health consequences. AD and GD are associated with dysregulated responses to reward which could be due to a common mechanism of dysregulated endogenous opioid signalling. We explored associations between reward anticipation responses, using the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task, and mu-opioid receptor (MOR) availability and endogenous opioid release capacity using [C]carfentanil positron emission tomography (PET), in 13 AD, 15 GD and 14 heathy control (HC) participants.

Background: The German multicenter research consortium BipoLife aims to investigate the mechanisms underlying bipolar disorders. It focuses in particular on people at high risk of developing the disorder and young patients in the early stages of the disease. Functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data was collected in all participating centers.

Excessive alcohol consumption remains a global public health crisis, with millions suffering from alcohol use disorder (AUD, or simply "alcoholism"), leading to significantly reduced life expectancy. This review examines the interplay between habitual and goal-directed behaviors and the associated neurobiological changes induced by chronic alcohol exposure. Contrary to a strict habit-goal dichotomy, our meta-analysis of the published animal experiments combined with a review of human studies reveals a nuanced transition between these behavioral control systems, emphasizing the need for refined terminology to capture the probabilistic nature of decision biases in individuals with a history of chronic alcohol exposure.

Background: The number of persons using opioids has increased worldwide in the last decade, particularly the use of opioid analgesics in North America and Africa. In Germany, the prevalence of heroin addiction has remained relatively stable.
Method: Narrative review of the literature.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are seen as a continuum ranging from goal-directed and hedonic drug use to loss of control over drug intake with aversive consequences for mental and physical health and social functioning. The main goals of our interdisciplinary German collaborative research centre on Losing and Regaining Control over Drug Intake (ReCoDe) are (i) to study triggers (drug cues, stressors, drug priming) and modifying factors (age, gender, physical activity, cognitive functions, childhood adversity, social factors, such as loneliness and social contact/interaction) that longitudinally modulate the trajectories of losing and regaining control over drug consumption under real-life conditions. (ii) To study underlying behavioural, cognitive and neurobiological mechanisms of disease trajectories and drug-related behaviours and (iii) to provide non-invasive mechanism-based interventions.

Pain after vaginal prolapse repair surgery with mesh is generally attributed to the mesh fixation, particularly to mesh erosion, dislocation or the development of hematoma. However, once all the causes have been excluded, the urinary system, bladder and ureters should be accurately examined by means of endovaginal ultrasound. This report concerns the case of a 72-year-old woman who had undergone mesh-supported prolapse surgery 3 months prior, with no other relevant diseases, who visited the emergency department complaining of dull, right-sided colic pain.

Background: Antidepressant discontinuation symptoms are becoming an increasingly important part of clinical practice, but the incidence of antidepressant discontinuation symptoms has not been quantified. An estimate of antidepressant discontinuation symptoms incidence could inform patients and clinicians in the discontinuation of treatment, and provide useful information to researchers in antidepressant treatments. We aimed to assess the incidence of antidepressant discontinuation symptoms in patients discontinuing both antidepressants and placebo in the published literature.

Sociocultural diversity in the German health care system is increasingly reflected in multicultural teams and the diversity of patients. To ensure successful collaboration in a multicultural environment and effective care to diverse patients the importance of cross-cultural competence training is growing. There is a lack of evidence-based training approaches for the German health care system, and it is unclear how the theoretical-conceptual promotion of cross-cultural competence can be achieved sustainably.

Introduction: Changes in surgical practice patterns to cure stress urinary incontinence (SUI) became evident after FDA warnings regarding vaginal mesh were issued. The primary aim was to describe nationwide numbers of suburethral alloplastic slings (SAS) inserted in 2010, 2015, 2018 and 2021 in Germany. Secondary, numbers were related to SUI specific non-alloplastic alternatives and bulking agents.

Objective: Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) report changes in they think of the world and themselves, referred to as posttraumatic cognitions, and changes in they think, reflected in increased perseverative thinking. We investigated whether pre-post therapy changes in the two aspects of thinking were associated with pre-post therapy changes in posttraumatic symptom severity.
Method: 219 d clinic patients with posttraumatic stress symptoms received trauma-focused psychotherapy with cognitive behavioral and metacognitive elements.

Objectives: Virtual Reality-based interventions have become an important element of digital mental health, offering accessible and scalable treatment options. However, studies on VR-based approaches in elderly patients are scarce. This explorative study examined the feasibility of using Virtual Reality (VR) for elderly patients with psychiatric illness, focusing on the sense of presence as the primary outcome.
