The quality of vascular care has significantly improved in part by the expansion of endovascular techniques for the treatment of symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD) in recent years. In Germany these are primarily provided by the three disciplines of vascular surgery, angiology, and interventional radiology (IR). However, the relative contribute of angiologists to the total number of cases performed is unknown.

Endovascular arterial revascularisations for the treatment of symptomatic peripheral arterial disease are constantly increasing in importance and number due to the changing age structure and high numbers of comorbidities in the German population. Patients with peripheral artery disease are often at increased risk for peri- and post-procedural complications including severe cardiovascular events. Due to limited financial and human resources and considerable risks of hospitalization, endovascular interventions that were previously reserved for hospitalized patients are now progressively considered to be performed as day case procedures.

Objectives: Various trials have assessed the outcome and reliability of the HeartWare HVAD (HW) and HeartMate 3 (HM3) left ventricular assist devices. A direct comparison of clinical outcomes and of the complication profile of these 2 left ventricular assist devices is lacking. We present a retrospective analysis of patients supported with HM3 and HW as a left ventricular assist device.

Background/aim: The study aimed at investigating the correlation between ductoscopic and histopathological findings and clarify whether the former allow for accurate prediction of malignancy.

Patients And Methods: The prospective national multi-center study covered a sample of 224 patients with pathologic nipple discharge. A total of 214 patients underwent ductoscopy with subsequent extirpation of the mammary duct.

The study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) in lower-extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) patients. A multi-centre, observational study was performed with 32 German and Austrian centres contributing data to the PTA registry. Data of 1,781 patients with lower-leg and pelvic PAD who were suitable for endovascular PTA treatment were contributed from participating centres.

Current approaches for resection of petrous bone cholesteatomas (PBCs), such as canal wall up (closed) and canal wall down (open) mastoidectomies, in the pediatric population present recurrence rates ranging between 17% and 70% with a high rate of postoperative complications involving hearing loss and facial nerve weakness. This technical note illustrates an alternative intracranial approach that was used in combination with the techniques of piezoelectric surgery, neuroendoscopy, and neuronavigation for safe and effective removal in a difficult pediatric case of recurrent PBC. The third recurrence of a PBC in a 14-year-old girl was diagnosed by CT and MRI.

Purpose: To determine functional and anatomical outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy for persistent full-thickness macular hole (MH) after intravitreal injection of ocriplasmin.

Methods: This is a multicenter retrospective interventional study of 37 eyes of 37 patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling for persistent MH after ocriplasmin treatment between December 2013 and December 2015 and comparison with 35 eyes of 35 patients who were offered ocriplasmin injection but underwent pars plana vitrectomy alone without pharmacologic vitreolysis before surgery. In addition, 24 matched pairs (MH diameter at baseline ±5 µm) were analyzed.

Background: The GeparQuinto study showed that adding bevacizumab to 24 weeks of anthracycline-taxane-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy increases pathological complete response (pCR) rates overall and specifically in patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). No difference in pCR rate was observed for adding everolimus to paclitaxel in nonearly responding patients. Here, we present disease-free (DFS) and overall survival (OS) analyses.

Background: Pathological complete response has been proposed as a surrogate endpoint for prediction of long-term clinical benefit, such as disease-free survival, event-free survival (EFS), and overall survival (OS). We had four key objectives: to establish the association between pathological complete response and EFS and OS, to establish the definition of pathological complete response that correlates best with long-term outcome, to identify the breast cancer subtypes in which pathological complete response is best correlated with long-term outcome, and to assess whether an increase in frequency of pathological complete response between treatment groups predicts improved EFS and OS.

Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Medline for clinical trials of neoadjuvant treatment of breast cancer.

The goal in breast conserving surgery (BCS) of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is removal of the tumor with a clear surgical margin. However, re-excision rates are regrettably high. To date, there are no adequate procedures for intraoperative margin assessment of DCIS.

Background: Patients testing positive for myocardial ischemia but without significant coronary artery (CA) stenosis in coronary angiography (CXA) are characterized as having "small vessel disease" (SVD). The aim of our study was to identify these patients by stress perfusion cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR).

Methods: 317 patients with suspected myocardial ischemia and clinical indication for CXA were scanned < 72 h before CXA in a whole-body 1.

Background: Assessing myocardial first-pass wash-in during pharmacological induced stress allows detection of perfusion deficits and indicates stenotic coronary arteries (CA). The aim of our study was to demonstrate clinical relevance of contrast-enhanced stress magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) by predicting necessity of CA intervention.

Methods: 738 patients with scheduled coronary angiography (CXA) were scanned in a 1.

In most cases of shunted hydrocephalus, shunt malfunction is evaluated by clinical examination and neuro-imaging. However if there is a discrepancy between neurological examination and imaging, additional shuntography can be helpful in the evaluation of the shunt function. In our clinic, radionuclide-imaging shuntography using (99m)technetium-pertechnetate was performed in 85 children between 1992 and 1995.
