Cyprus International Institute for Environmental & Public Health in association with Harvard School of Public Health, Cyprus University of Technology, Limassol, Cyprus ; Department of Pediatrics, Hospital "Archbishop Makarios III", Nicosia, Cyprus ; 95 Irenes Street, 3041 Limassol, Cyprus.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the relationship between vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene variants and asthma in Cypriot adolescents, focusing on how these variants interact with vitamin D levels.
  • - Out of 190 current wheezers and 671 healthy controls, the TaqI variant showed a significant association, with the "tt" genotype being more common in those with asthma compared to controls.
  • - The findings suggest that the TaqI genotype may increase asthma susceptibility, particularly when vitamin D levels are sufficient (>20 ng/ml), indicating that both genetic and vitamin D factors are important in asthma development.

To prepare the registered nurse of tomorrow in the United Kingdom (UK) to care for patients in general practice (GP)-led services, today's student nurses need to have the opportunity to experience placements with practice nurses to enable them to make positive career choices to become practice nurses in the future. The role of the practice nurse is described in the article. As a pilot project, seventeen students undertook placements with practice nurses in one of seven GP practices selected by the London GP Deanery and the university as having fulfilled the criteria to support student nurses in placements.

Vitamin D levels and status amongst asthmatic and non-asthmatic adolescents in Cyprus: a comparative cross-sectional study.

BMC Public Health

January 2015

Cyprus International Institute for Environmental & Public Health in association with Harvard School of Public Health, Cyprus University of Technology, Limassol, Cyprus.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between vitamin D levels and asthma severity in adolescents aged 16-17 years, comparing those with asthma (Active Asthmatics) to those without (Never Wheezers/Never Asthmatics).
  • Results show that asthmatic adolescents have significantly lower mean serum vitamin D levels and are more likely to fall into lower vitamin D categories, indicating potential vitamin D deficiency.
  • There is also a negative trend observed, where lower vitamin D levels correlate with increased asthma severity indicators among asthmatic participants.

Glyco-biomarkers: potential determinants of cellular physiology and pathology.

Dis Markers

February 2009

The Sir Joseph Hotung Centre for Musculoskeletal Diseases, St George University of London, London, UK.

Once dismissed as just the icing on the cake, sugar molecules are emerging as vital components in life's intricate machinery. Our understanding of their function within the context of the proteins and lipids to which they are attached has matured rapidly, and with it the far reaching clinical implications are becoming understood. Recent advances in high-throughput glycomic techniques, glyco biomarker profiling, glyco-bioinformatics and development of increasingly sophisticated glyco-arrays, combined with our increased understanding of the molecular details of glycosylation have facilitated the linkage between aberrant glycosylation and human diseases, and highlighted the possibility of using glyco-biomarkers as potential determinants of disease and its progression.

Background: In the UK routinely collected computerized clinical data is used to assess progress towards financially incentivised quality targets for chronic disease management including hypertension.

Objective: To develop a method for assessing the impact of recording quality target data in the clinical consultation.

Methods: Raters were trained how to rate a multi-channel video of a simulated clinical consultation for interaction between actors, computer use, non-verbal communication.
