Figure drawing tasks are commonly used standalone or as part of broader screening tests to detect cognitive impairment. Only one study has compared the classification accuracy of three common drawing tasks—overlapping infinity loops, wire cube, and the clock drawing task (CDT)—in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia, but age and education, which impact performance, were not accounted for. We replicated the research, adjusting for age and education and, for the first time, assessed subjective cognitive decline (SCD) too.

Background: The worldwide prevalence of dementia is rapidly rising. Alzheimer's disease (AD), accounts for 70% of cases and has a 10-20-year preclinical period, when brain pathology covertly progresses before cognitive symptoms appear. The 2020 Lancet Commission estimates that 40% of dementia cases could be prevented by modifying lifestyle/medical risk factors.

Article Synopsis
  • In late 2021 and early 2022, a number of previously healthy children developed acute hepatitis alongside human adenovirus infections, prompting an investigation at Children's of Alabama hospital.
  • Out of 15 children with acute hepatitis, 9 (60%) had unknown causes, and 8 of these tested positive for human adenovirus, suggesting a potential link.
  • Liver biopsies revealed varying degrees of hepatitis but not direct evidence of the virus; however, some children recovered with care while 2 required liver transplants.

New horizons in late-onset essential tremor: a pre-cognitive biomarker of dementia?

Age Ageing

July 2022

Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, College of Health and Medicine, University of Tasmania, Hobart 7001, Australia.

Essential tremor (ET) is the most common cause of tremor in older adults. However, it is increasingly recognised that 30-50% of ET cases are misdiagnosed. Late-onset ET, when tremor begins after the age of 60, is particularly likely to be misdiagnosed and there is mounting evidence that it may be a distinct clinical entity, perhaps better termed 'ageing-related tremor'.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder of the brain that causes frequent occurrence of seizures. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a tool that assists neurologists in detecting epileptic seizures caused by an unexpected flow of electrical activities in the brain. Automated detection of an epileptic seizure is a crucial task in diagnosing epilepsy which overcomes the drawback of a visual diagnosis.

Importance: Unruptured intracranial aneurysms not undergoing preventive endovascular or neurosurgical treatment are often monitored radiologically to detect aneurysm growth, which is associated with an increase in risk of rupture. However, the absolute risk of aneurysm rupture after detection of growth remains unclear.

Objective: To determine the absolute risk of rupture of an aneurysm after detection of growth during follow-up and to develop a prediction model for rupture.

Significant cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease exacerbates the reliance on visual feedback during upper limb reaches.

Neuropsychologia

July 2021

Department of Neurology, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Leeds, UK; Hull York Medical School, University of York, UK; Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia. Electronic address:

While upper limb reaches are often made in a feed-forward manner, visual feedback during the movement can be used to guide the reaching hand towards a target. In Parkinson's disease (PD), there is evidence that the utilisation of this visual feedback is increased. However, it is unclear if this is due solely to the characteristic slowness of movements in PD providing more opportunity for incorporating visual feedback to modify reach trajectories, or whether it is due to cognitive decline impacting (feed-forward) movement planning ability.

Deployment of an Interdisciplinary Predictive Analytics Task Force to Inform Hospital Operational Decision-Making During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Mayo Clin Proc

March 2021

Department of Health Sciences Research and Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN; Department of Health Sciences Research, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.

In March 2020, our institution developed an interdisciplinary predictive analytics task force to provide coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospital census forecasting to help clinical leaders understand the potential impacts on hospital operations. As the situation unfolded into a pandemic, our task force provided predictive insights through a structured set of visualizations and key messages that have helped the practice to anticipate and react to changing operational needs and opportunities. The framework shared here for the deployment of a COVID-19 predictive analytics task force could be adapted for effective implementation at other institutions to provide evidence-based messaging for operational decision-making.
