Irradiation as a hazard for mucociliary clearance.

Neuro Endocrinol Lett

July 2016

University Clinic of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Medical University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria.

Objectives: In this paper we study effects of irradiation to pulmonary tissue on a micro and ultrastructural level to get insights into the dynamics of morphological changes and associated post-radiative physiological conditions.

Methods: Animal and human pulmonary tissue with and without radiation damage was subject to light, transmission, scanning and polarization microscopy and morphometric evaluation.

Results: The present investigations on the influence of irradiation on experimental and human lung tissue demonstrate that complex changes are induced in the cells which are essential for mucociliary clearance.

Emotion stimulus processing in narcolepsy with cataplexy.

J Sleep Res

February 2017

1st Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neurology, Charles University and General University Hospital, Prague 2, Czech Republic.

Reported brain abnormalities in anatomy and function in patients with narcolepsy with cataplexy led to a project based on qualitative electroencephalography examination and analysis in an attempt to find a narcolepsy with cataplexy-specific brain-derived pattern, or a sequence of brain locations involved in processing humorous stimuli. Laughter is the trigger of cataplexy in these patients, and the difference between patients and healthy controls during the laughter should therefore be notable. Twenty-six adult patients (14 male, 12 female) suffering from narcolepsy with cataplexy and 10 healthy controls (five male, five female) were examined.

Introduction: Following orchiectomy patients with clinical stage I (CSI) testicular seminoma may be managed by active surveillance (AS) or adjuvant treatment (radiotherapy or chemotherapy). In view of the published data on long-term toxicity, mainly second malignant neoplasms (SMNs), adjuvant radiotherapy (ART) is currently no longer recommended as adjuvant therapy for these patients. The purpose of our recent study was to compare the impact of two selected treatment approaches - AS versus adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT) on survival in patients with CSI testicular seminoma.

Amifostine protects normal cells from DNA damage induction by ionizing radiation or chemotherapeutics, whereas cancer cells typically remain uninfluenced. While confirming this phenomenon, we have revealed by comet assay and currently the most sensitive method of DNA double strand break (DSB) quantification (based on γH2AX/53BP1 high-resolution immunofluorescence microscopy) that amifostine treatment supports DSB repair in γ-irradiated normal NHDF fibroblasts but alters it in MCF7 carcinoma cells. These effects follow from the significantly lower activity of alkaline phosphatase measured in MCF7 cells and their supernatants as compared with NHDF fibroblasts.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes thyroid cancer (TC) trends in the Slovak Republic from 1968 to 2007, focusing on incidence and mortality rates by histological type and patient age.
  • The results show a significant increase in TC incidence among females (3.6% annually) and males (2.2%), while the overall mortality rates for both genders are decreasing.
  • Notably, there is an upward trend in papillary carcinoma cases, especially in females, and the study suggests factors like improved diagnostic practices influencing these trends.
