Because bread can contain potential carcinogens such as acrylamide, and is widely consumed, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine whether bread consumption is associated with increased cancer risk. PubMed and Medline databases were searched up to 1 March 2024, for studies that provided hazard ratios (HRs) (or similar) for bread consumption and cancer incidence or mortality. Only prospective cohort studies were included.

Cognitive ability tests are widely used in employee selection contexts, but large race and ethnic subgroup mean differences in test scores represent a major drawback to their use. We examine the potential for an item-level procedure to reduce these test score mean differences. In three data sets, differing proportions of cognitive ability test items with higher levels of difficulty or subgroup mean differences were removed from the tests.

Purpose: Oral care (brushing teeth) may reduce the risk of hospital-acquired pneumonia. The number of patients completing oral care before elective cardiovascular surgery (CVS) was unknown at the study institution. The aims of this quality improvement project were to determine the baseline of oral care completion before elective CVS and increase the number of patients who self-reported oral care completions through an educational intervention.

Effectiveness of complete decongestive therapy for upper extremity breast cancer-related lymphedema: a review of systematic reviews.

Med Oncol

October 2024

Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, Division of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA.

Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) remains a challenging condition impacting function and quality of life. Complete decongestive therapy (CDT) is the current standard of care, necessitating a comprehensive review of its impact. This paper presents a systematic review (SR) of SRs on CDT's efficacy in BCRL, and the components of manual lymph drainage (MLD) and exercise.

The ecological, evolutionary, economic, and cultural importance of algae necessitates a continued integration of phycological research, education, outreach, and engagement. Here, we comment on several topics discussed during a networking workshop-Algae and the Environment-that brought together phycological researchers from a variety of institutions and career stages. We share some of our perspectives on the state of phycology by examining gaps in teaching and research.

For one School of Nursing in a mid-sized, urban, private, liberal arts university in the upper Midwest, internal and external factors coalesced, requiring the reassessment/alignment of the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral programs with professional standards/competencies and institutional mission/values. The development process of a new curricular framework to conceptually support the curriculum within the School of Nursing was reflective of participatory inquiry. The process closely followed the principles of the nursing complexity leadership model, complexity science, and improvement science.

Omega (Westport)

September 2024

Economics and Political Science Department, St Catherine University, St Paul, MN, USA.

Using data from the 2011-2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, this research employs a two-way fixed effects model to investigate the impact of child loss on parental mental health. The findings indicate a significant decline in mental well-being among Chinese bereaved parents aged 45 to 65, as evidenced by elevated depression scores. Mechanism analysis reveals reduced emotional support from children and increased alcohol consumption, exacerbating mental health challenges.

Racially restrictive covenants in housing deeds, commonplace in Minnesota for houses built from the 1910s to the 1950s, provided a foundation for the myriad of policies that made it difficult for people of color to obtain housing. Though covenants were ruled illegal in 1968, their legacy continues to shape neighborhoods. The Mapping Prejudice Project's efforts in Hennepin County, Minnesota, produced the first systematic documentation of racially restrictive covenants.

Background:  Health informatics education is pivotal in integrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) principles into curricula and leveraging data with equity considerations. Integrating clinically driven data with other datasets is crucial to comprehensive understanding of patient care demographics, experiences, and outcomes to create equity-minded data storytelling. Publicly available Healthy People 2030 (HP2030) resources complement academic electronic health records, supporting tailored learning activities in informatics education to enhance educational utility through a DEIA lens.

We estimate the effect of state-level policies enacting universal free full-day kindergarten on mothers' labor supply using a life-cycle analysis. Similar to previous research on childcare and labor supply, we find that free full-day kindergarten increases labor force participation rates for mothers whose youngest child is kindergarten-aged by 4.3 to 7.

The cognitive distortion scale (CDS) is a self-rated measure to assess the degree of cognitive distortion which is 10 thinking errors commonly seen in depression. However, there is no scale to measure 10 types cognitive distortions specific to depression in Japan. Therefore, this study translated the CDS into Japanese (CDS-J), and examined its factor structure, validity, and reliability in a Japanese population.

Allosteric cooperativity between ATP and substrates is a prominent characteristic of the cAMP-dependent catalytic subunit of protein kinase A (PKA-C). This long-range synergistic action is involved in substrate recognition and fidelity, and it may also regulate PKA's association with regulatory subunits and other binding partners. To date, a complete understanding of this intramolecular mechanism is still lacking.

The photovoice literature has focused mainly on research collaborations between researchers in academia and community partners. There is limited evidence of undergraduate students facilitating photovoice research projects with underserved Black, Indigenous, and persons of color (BIPOC). Students' participation in photovoice research increases their understanding of local issues and can empower them to engage with local communities to create change.

Preliminary Evaluation of a Questionnaire to Measure Program-Level Sense of Belonging Among Student Physical Therapists.

J Phys Ther Educ

June 2024

Thomas Gus Almonroeder is an associate professor in the College of Health Professions, Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at the Trine University, 1819 Carew St., Fort Wayne, IN 46805 Please address all correspondence to Thomas Gus Almonroeder.

Introduction: A greater sense of belonging has been found to correspond with better academic performance/motivation, retention, and general mental well-being among college students. As a result, it is important to be able to meaningfully assess student physical therapists' sense of belonging.

Review Of Literature: While there are questionnaires available to assess sense of belonging at the university level, it is also important to be able to assess students' sense of belonging in a narrower context, such as within their program of study.

Bioorthogonal chemistry has gained widespread use in the study of many biological systems of interest, including protein prenylation. Prenylation is a post-translational modification, in which one or two 15- or 20-carbon isoprenoid chains are transferred onto cysteine residues near the C-terminus of a target protein. The three main enzymes─protein farnesyltransferase (FTase), geranylgeranyl transferase I (GGTase I), and geranylgeranyl transferase II (GGTase II)─that catalyze this process have been shown to tolerate numerous structural modifications in the isoprenoid substrate.

The potential associated with reduction of the linearly-functionalized 6,6'-biazulenic scaffold is accurately correlated to the combined Hammett parameters of the substituents over >600 mV range. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the 2,2'-dichloro-substituted derivative revealed unexpectedly short C-Cl bond distances, along with other metric changes, suggesting a non-trivial cycloheptafulvalene-like structural contribution.

Optum Labs Visiting Fellow, Division of Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation, University of Minnesota Medical School, Mayo Mail Code 366, 420 Delaware St SE, 55455, Minneapolis, MN, USA.

Objective: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood malignancy and among the most common malignancies in young adults and requires a unique pattern of healthcare utilization including an acute/emergent presentation and an intensive initial 8 months of therapy followed by two years of outpatient treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic caused massive global disruptions in healthcare use and delivery. This report aims to examine the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the presentation, diagnosis and continued management of childhood and young adult ALL in regard to utilization and cost of care among commercially insured individuals in the United States.
