The dietary effect of fructooligosaccharide (FOS) supplementation as an alternative to antibiotics on ileal mucosa and digesta microbiota was investigated in broiler chickens (n = 180). Cardiac surgery patients with a prolonged ICU length of stay (prICULOS) have lower rates of functional survival following their procedure, however detailed information on their health related quality of life (HRQoL) is lacking. The muscarinic acetylcholine type 1 receptor (MR) is a metabotropic G protein-coupled receptor. Aims: Abnormalities in mitochondrial function under diabetic conditions can lead to deficits in function of cortical neurons and their support cells exhibiting a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. We aimed to assess mitochondrial respiration rates and membrane potential or HO generation simultaneously and expression of proteins involved in mitochondrial dynamics, ROS scavenging and AMPK/SIRT/PGC-1α pathway activity in cortex under diabetic conditions.

Method: Accelerometry from community-dwelling adults ≥50 years old (n = 2317) enrolled in the 2003-04 and 2005-06 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used. Bouted (≥10 min) and sporadic (<10 min) durations of MVPA were analyzed based on meeting 0%, 1-49%, 50-99%, and ≥100% of physical activity guidelines (150 min/week of MVPA).

Oxylipins are bioactive lipids derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that are important regulators of kidney function and health. Targeted lipidomic analyses of renal oxylipins from four studies of rodent models of renal disease were performed to investigate the differential effects of dietary flax compared to fish oil, soy protein compared to casein, and sex. Across all studies, dietary fish oil was more effective than flax oil in reducing n-6 PUFA derived oxylipins and elevating eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) derived oxylipins, whereas dietary flax oil resulted in higher α-linolenic acid (ALA) oxylipins.

Down-regulation of mitochondrial gene expression and function has been reported in both human tissues and in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) from animal models of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Systematic review of preoperative physical activity and its impact on postcardiac surgical outcomes.

Objectives: The objective of this systematic review was to study the impact of preoperative physical activity levels on adult cardiac surgical patients' postoperative: (1) major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs), (2) adverse events within 30 days, (3) hospital length of stay (HLOS), (4) intensive care unit length of stay (ICU LOS), (5) activities of daily living (ADLs), (6) quality of life, (7) cardiac rehabilitation attendance and (8) physical activity behaviour.

Methods: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, AgeLine and Cochrane library for cohort studies was conducted.

Results: Eleven studies (n=5733 patients) met the inclusion criteria.

Objective: This study determined whether frailty provides incremental value to the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation II in identifying patients at risk of poor 1-year functional survival.

Methods: This prospective study in patients undergoing cardiac surgery defined frailty using 3 common definitions: (1) the Modified Fried Criteria; (2) the Short Physical Performance Battery; and (3) the Clinical Frailty Scale. The primary outcome was functional survival, defined as being alive at 1 year postsurgery with a health-related quality of life score greater than 60 on the EuroQol-Visual Analogue Scale.

Quercetin is a plant-based flavonoid with inhibitory effects on P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and CYP3A4 and also antioxidant properties. To mitigate these therapeutic barriers, DoxQ, a novel derivative of doxorubicin, was synthesized by conjugating quercetin to doxorubicin.
