Thermal acclimation effects on locomotory performance have been widely documented for macroscopic organisms, but such responses remain largely unexplored in microorganisms. Metabolic theory of ecology (MTE) predicts faster responses in smaller organisms, with potential consequences for host-parasite interactions in variable temperature environments. We investigated thermal acclimation effects on zoospores of the amphibian fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), quantifying (1) thermal performance for maximum zoospore velocity and (2) high temperatures needed to immobilize 50% (CT50max) or 100% (CT100max) of zoospores.

Aquatic pathogens often cannot tolerate drying, and thus their spread, and diversity across a landscape may depend on interactions between hydrological conditions and the movement of infected hosts. The aquatic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is a nearly ubiquitous pathogen of amphibians and particular lineages have been associated with host declines. By coupling amphibian surveys with molecular pathogen detection and genotyping techniques, we characterized the spatial dynamics and genetic diversity of Bd on a landscape containing both permanent and ephemeral ponds.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of 57 iron bis(dithiolene)-N-heterocyclic carbene adducts were conducted to determine what parameters predict, and possibly influence, the coordination of these aforementioned adducts. The parameters considered herein include three different types of nuclear magnetic resonance (C-NMR, Se-NMR, and P-NMR) isotropic chemical shifts, the Tolman Electronic Parameter (TEP), the Huynh Electronic Parameter (HEP), and the percent buried volume (%) of the different N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) calculated from DFT. These parameters were selected based upon prior literature connection to σ-donor ability, π-acidity, and steric effects.

The presence of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) is an ongoing public health concern. While traditional methods to discover ADRs are very costly and limited, it is prudent to predict ADRs through non-invasive methods such as machine learning based on existing data. Although various studies exist regarding ADR prediction using non-clinical data, a process that leverages both demographic and non-clinical data for ADR prediction is missing.

Hendricks' pregnancy rescue case (PRC) tries to show that abortion is typically morally wrong. I argue here that there are at least two morally relevant differences between the abortion in PRC and the typical abortion so that the latter isn't morally wrong even if the former is morally wrong. I develop five modifications to PRC to show that these two differences are morally important.

We have predicted acid dissociation constants (p ), octanol-water partition coefficients ( ), and DMPC lipid membrane-water partition coefficients ( ) of 150 different eight-carbon-containing poly-/perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (C8-PFCAs) utilizing the COnductor-like Screening MOdel for Realistic Solvents (COSMO-RS) theory. Different trends associated with functionalization, degree of fluorination, degree of saturation, degree of chlorination, and branching are discussed on the basis of the predicted values for the partition coefficients. In general, functionalization closest to the carboxylic headgroup had the greatest impact on the value of the predicted physicochemical properties.

A cell dealing with a broken chromosome in mitosis is like a driver dealing with a flat tire on the highway: damage repair must occur under non-ideal circumstances. Mitotic chromosome breaks encounter problems related to structures called micronuclei. These aberrant nuclei are linked to cell death, mutagenesis, and cancer.

Background: Vertebral endplate sclerosis and facet osteoarthritis have been documented in animals and humans. However, it is unclear how these adjacent pathologies engage in crosstalk with the intervertebral disc. This study sought to elucidate this crosstalk by assessing each compartment individually in response to acute disc injury.

As digital economy flourishes, there have been fundamental changes in the patterns of economic development, social structure, and ecological environment, which are the key elements of inclusive green growth (IGG). However, whether digital economy can effectively contribute to IGG requires further investigation. This paper evaluates the direct and spatial spillover effect of digital economy on IGG of 280 cities in China during 2011-2019 using Spatial Durbin Model (SDM).

Hendricks' The Impairment Argument (TIA) claims that it is immoral to impair a fetus by causing it to have fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Since aborting a fetus impairs it to a greater degree than causing it to have FAS, then abortion is also immoral. In this article, I argue that TIA ought to be rejected.

Varying degrees of hydroxyapatite (HA) surface functionalization have been implicated as the primary driver of differential osteogenesis observed in infiltrating cells. The ability to reliably create spatially controlled areas of mineralization in composite engineered tissues is of growing interest in the field, and the use of HA-functionalized biomaterials may provide a robust solution to this challenge. In this study, we successfully fabricated polycaprolactone salt-leached scaffolds with two levels of a biomimetic calcium phosphate coating to examine their effects on MSC osteogenesis.

CD4+ tissue resident memory T cells (TRMs) are implicated in the formation of persistent HIV reservoirs that are established during the very early stages of infection. The tissue-specific factors that direct T cells to establish tissue residency are not well defined, nor are the factors that establish viral latency. We report that costimulation via MAdCAM-1 and retinoic acid (RA), two constituents of gut tissues, together with TGF-β, promote the differentiation of CD4+ T cells into a distinct subset α4β7+CD69+CD103+ TRM-like cells.

I argue here that the impairment principle requires clarification. It needs to explain what makes one impairment greater than another, otherwise we will be unable to make the comparisons it requires, the ones that enable us to determine whether b really is a greater impairment than a, and as a result, whether causing b is immoral because causing a is. I then develop two of what I think are the most natural accounts of what might make one impairment greater than another.

Plant disease resistance is a complex process that is maintained in an intricate balance with development. Increasing evidence indicates the importance of posttranscriptional regulation of plant defense by RNA binding proteins. In a genetic screen for suppressors of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) accelerated cell death 6-1 (acd6-1), a small constitutive defense mutant whose defense level is grossly in a reverse proportion to plant size, we identified an allele of the canonical flowering regulatory gene FLOWERING LOCUS K HOMOLOGY DOMAIN (FLK) encoding a putative protein with triple K homology (KH) repeats.

Classroom observation is commonplace in higher education, but the process itself varies from school to school. A literature search revealed a lack of structured tools and universal interdisciplinary processes for postsecondary classroom observation. Thus, the Evidence-Based Classroom Observation Technique was developed to include both the tool and the interdisciplinary process.

Since FY 2013, as a part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) program, the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (HVBP) program has adjusted Medicare's payments to hospitals based on the total performance score of the hospital. First, the program reduces a portion of the hospital's Medicare payments in a specific fiscal year, and then, by the end of the same fiscal year, the amount of the payment reductions will be awarded to the hospitals based on the total performance score; thus, the hospitals that do not receive the reward will lose the portion of money reduced by Medicare. In this research, we apply the theory of state dependence and use the dynamic random effect probit model to estimate this effect.

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are problematic pathogens because infections caused by these organisms are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. These organisms often harbor multiple resistance mechanisms, which makes it difficult to treat their associated infections. Treatment typically consists of intravenous antibiotics that are selected based on the specific susceptibility pattern for the pathogen.

We sought to uncover patterns of school counselors' ( = 85) shared beliefs and emotions that can impact their decision making in reporting suspected CSA.
