: With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, this study seeks to understand how medical students' involvement in the HIV response during the COVID-19 pandemic - as well as before and after it - has influenced their decision to specialise in HIV care and their participation in HIV-related activities in the future.: Quantitative and qualitative approaches were utilised among medical students from Ambrose Alli University in their fourth, fifth and sixth years of study respectively. Data from this study was analysed using the SPSS version 21 module for descriptive statistics.

Comprehensive Myocardial Assessment by Computed Tomography: Impact on Short-Term Outcomes After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.

JACC Cardiovasc Imaging

April 2024

Cardiovascular Imaging Research Center and Core Lab at Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Valve Science Center, Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Quantification of myocardial changes in severe aortic stenosis (AS) is prognostically important. The potential for comprehensive myocardial assessment pre-transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) by computed tomography angiography (CTA) is unknown.

Objectives: This study sought to evaluate whether quantification of left ventricular (LV) extracellular volume-a marker of myocardial fibrosis-and global longitudinal strain-a marker of myocardial deformation-at baseline CTA associate with post-TAVR outcomes.

Creating a social media strategy for an international cardiothoracic research network: a scoping review.

Eur J Cardiovasc Nurs

December 2023

Cardiothoracic Surgery, The Royal Melbourne Hospital, 300 Grattan Street (corner of Royal Parade), Parkville, Victoria 3050, Australia.

Aims: A cardiac surgery international nursing and allied professional research network titled CONNECT was created to strengthen collaborative cardiac surgery research through shared initiatives including supervision, mentorship, workplace exchange programs, and multi-site clinical research. As with any new initiative, there is a need to build brand awareness to enhance user familiarity, grow membership, and promote various opportunities offered. Social media has been used across various surgical disciplines; however, their effectiveness in promoting scholarly and academic-based initiatives has not been examined.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiovascular imaging is essential for assessing risk and detecting heart disease in cancer patients undergoing potentially harmful therapies.
  • The position statement evaluates various imaging techniques, including echocardiography and cardiac MRI, and recommends specific parameters for monitoring cardiovascular health in these patients.
  • It also outlines protocols for pre-treatment evaluations, surveillance during treatment, and addresses unique considerations for special populations, highlighting the need for ongoing research in the field of cardio-oncology.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute coronary syndromes include a specific type called MINOCA, which involves myocardial infarction without significant blockage in coronary arteries and affects younger, predominantly female patients with fewer risk factors.
  • * MINOCA has different causes, including issues with epicardial arteries (like plaque disruption) and microvascular problems (like spasms or takotsubo syndrome), making it crucial to identify the underlying mechanism for proper treatment and prognosis.
  • * The diagnosis of MINOCA involves various tests, including coronary angiography and cardiac imaging, and standardizing care through future clinical trials could improve outcomes for these patients.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are approved for first-line (cisplatin unfit, PD-L1+) and platinum-refractory urothelial carcinoma (UC). Still, most patients experience progressive disease (PD) as the best response. Although higher response rates to subsequent systemic treatment (SST) have been described, post-PD outcome data are scarce.

Purpose: It is well established that high mammographic density (MD), when adjusted for age and body mass index, is one of the strongest known risk factors for breast cancer (BC), and also associates with higher incidence of interval cancers in screening due to the masking of early mammographic abnormalities. Increasing research is being undertaken to determine the underlying histological and biochemical determinants of MD and their consequences for BC pathogenesis, anticipating that improved mechanistic insights may lead to novel preventative or treatment interventions. At the same time, technological advances in digital and contrast mammography are such that the validity of well-established relationships needs to be re-examined in this context.

Background: Administering maintenance COPD therapy with a combination of multiple inhalers may increase inhaler errors. This study evaluated the potential benefits of using a single Ellipta dry powder inhaler (DPI) compared with two combinations of DPIs commonly used to deliver triple maintenance therapy.

Methods: Patients receiving inhaled COPD medication were enrolled in this multicenter, randomized, open-label, placebo-device, crossover study with a 2×2 complete block design (NCT0298218), which comprised two substudies: Ellipta vs Diskus + HandiHaler (substudy 1) or Turbuhaler + HandiHaler (substudy 2).

Metastatic uterine cancer is a form of systemic disease. As for other solid tumours, it is advocated by some authors that in selected patients, lung metastasectomy may play a role in long-term disease control. The practice of lung metastasectomy is however open to criticism as there is lack of convincing evidence, and over-encouraging outcomes may be attributed to intrinsic selection bias.

Unlabelled: Inhaler device errors are common and may impact the effectiveness of the delivered drug. There is a paucity of up-to-date systematic reviews (SRs) or meta-analyses (MAs) of device errors in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. This SR and MA provides an estimate of overall error rates (both critical and non-critical) by device type and evaluates factors associated with inhaler misuse.

With several functions and a fundamental influence over cognition and motor functions, the basal ganglia are the cohesive centre of the brain. There are several conditions which affect the basal ganglia and these have various clinical and radiological manifestations. Nevertheless, on magnetic resonance imaging there is a limited differential diagnosis for those conditions presenting with T1 weighted spin echo hyperintensity within the central nervous system in general and the basal ganglia in particular.

Context: Germline AIP mutations usually cause young-onset acromegaly with low penetrance in a subset of familial isolated pituitary adenoma families. We describe our experience with a large family with R304* AIP mutation and discuss some of the diagnostic dilemmas and management issues.

Objective: The aim of the study was to identify and screen mutation carriers in the family.

Endoscopic ultrasound in the localisation of pancreatic islet cell tumours.

Best Pract Res Clin Endocrinol Metab

June 2005

Departments of Diagnostic Imaging and Gastroenterology, St Bartholomew' Hospital, QE2 X-ray, West Smithfield, London EC1A 7BE, UK.

The role of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in the evaluation of entero-pancreatic endocrine tumours has evolved in conjunction with advances in other imaging methods. The high spatial resolution of this technique allows the detection of very small lesions and their precise anatomical localisation. In patients with biochemically proven insulinoma, EUS can be effectively used as a first line investigation, with a sensitivity of 94%.

Background: Despite limitations the transvalvular gradient (TVG) still is commonly used in aortic stenosis when patients are referred for aortic valve replacement. We wished to ascertain if it had a role in predicting outcome from valve replacement rather than as an indicator of severity, specifically investigating if the TVG affected renal dysfunction, hospital stay, and medium-term survival after valve replacement.

Methods: Six hundred and twenty-three consecutive patients who had aortic valve replacement were identified and 211 of these patients were isolated as first time replacement for aortic stenosis that formed the final study group, and were followed up for up to 48 months.
