Introduction: SCLC has traditionally been considered to arise from toxic exposure factors, such as smoking. Recent evidence has revealed that germline mutations may also affect the development of SCLC; however, these alterations remain understudied. We sought to identify novel germline mutations in SCLC including germline copy number variations (CNVs) in our cohort of patients.

Background: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is common, persistent, and is associated with lower quality of life, impaired functioning, and psychological distress in cancer patients. Studies suggest that family caregivers of cancer patients experience equal or greater levels of FCR than patients themselves. In the past 5 years, several interventions have demonstrated their ability to reduce FCR among cancer patients and in patient-caregiver dyads.

Background: Racism has been shown to impact the health of Black persons through its influence on health care, including its expression through implicit biases in provider training, attitudes, and behaviours. Less is known about the experiences of racism in contexts outside of the USA, and how race and racism interact with other social locations and systems of discrimination to shape Black patients' experiences of racism in health care encounters. To help address this gap, this study examined diverse Black individuals' perceived experiences of, and attitudes towards, anti-Black racism and racial discrimination in Canadian health care, specifically in Montreal, Quebec.

Introduction: Untreated bipolar disorder in pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Despite advances in clinical management, there is concern among obstetric providers and patients about the safety of pharmacological agents for the treatment of bipolar disorder in pregnancy. Recent studies have shown atypical antipsychotics and lamotrigine to have a favorable safety profile; however, little information is published on lurasidone.

Primary care physicians' perceptions of artificial intelligence systems in the care of adolescents' mental health.

BMC Prim Care

Department of Family Medicine and Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences, McGill University, 5858 Ch. de la Côte-des-Neiges, Montréal, QC, H3S 1Z1, Canada.

Background: Given that mental health problems in adolescence may have lifelong impacts, the role of primary care physicians (PCPs) in identifying and managing these issues is important. Artificial Intelligence (AI) may offer solutions to the current challenges involved in mental health care. We therefore explored PCPs' challenges in addressing adolescents' mental health, along with their attitudes towards using AI to assist them in their tasks.

Backround: Real-world, long-term survival outcomes of neoadjuvant, docetaxel-based therapy for esophageal and junctional adenocarcinoma are lacking. This study describes the long-term survival outcomes of patients with esophageal and junctional adenocarcinoma treated with neoadjuvant docetaxel-based chemotherapy and en bloc transthoracic esophagectomy.

Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis of a prospectively maintained database from a regional upper gastrointestinal cancer network in Quebec, Canada, was performed.

Background: Family caregivers of cancer survivors experience equal or greater levels of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) than survivors themselves. Some interventions have demonstrated their ability to reduce FCR among cancer survivors and dyads (patient and caregivers). However, to date, no validated intervention exists to focus solely on family caregiver's FCR.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the implementation and outcomes of a quality improvement intervention for older adults discharged from hospital to home, that used a patient-centred discharge education tool called the We conducted a pre-post evaluation of PCAP implementation among patients 65 years and older and discharged home from an acute medical or geriatric admission at two general hospitals. Two patient cohorts, PRE and POST, were analysed using administrative data ( = 3,309) and post-discharge structured interviews in a subset of patients ( = 326). Outcomes were 90-day readmissions and return emergency department (ED) visits, and transition experiences (10-item scale).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in pregnant women and the risk of transmission to newborns, which is not well understood.
  • A total of 1,050 pregnant women were recruited, revealing a prevalence rate of 40.3% for HPV among participants at the time of recruitment.
  • The research involved HPV DNA testing from both maternal vaginal and placental samples, as well as testing on newborn children of HPV-positive mothers to determine the persistence of the virus.

Background: Individuals with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) have an elevated lifetime risk of chronic hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and premature cardiovascular disease. Because breastfeeding duration and exclusivity have been associated in observational studies with improved cardiovascular health, optimizing breastfeeding in those with HDP might be an unrealized cardio-prevention approach, in particular because individuals with HDP have more breastfeeding challenges. Breastfeeding supportive interventions targeting one's breastfeeding self-efficacy have been shown to improve breastfeeding rates.

Background: Mental health problems are frequent in the postpartum period, but accessible treatment options are lacking. The MPOWER study investigated whether the use of trained lay coaches could increase the uptake and effectiveness of a web-based intervention (WBI) for women with postpartum depression and/or anxiety.

Objectives: First, to compare the feasibility and acceptability of a WBI for women with postpartum depression and anxiety, with and without the addition of telephone coaching calls.

Institute of Medical Science, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, 1 King's College Circle, Medical Sciences Building, Room 2374, Toronto ON M5S 1A8, Canada.

Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) methylome is understudied. Here, we comprehensively profile SCLC using cell-free methylated DNA immunoprecipitation followed by sequencing (cfMeDIP-seq). Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from plasma of 74 patients with SCLC pre-treatment and from 20 non-cancer participants, genomic DNA (gDNA) from peripheral blood leukocytes from the same 74 patients, and 7 accompanying circulating tumor cell-derived xenografts (CDXs) underwent cfMeDIP-seq.
