Carotid blowout syndrome (CBS) refers to rupture of the carotid artery and is an uncommon complication of head and neck cancer that can be rapidly fatal without prompt diagnosis and intervention. CBS develops when a damaged arterial wall cannot sustain its integrity against the patient's blood pressure, mainly in patients who have undergone surgical procedures and radiotherapy due to cancer of the head and neck, or have been reirradiated for a recurrent or second primary tumor in the neck. Among patients irradiated prior to surgery, CBS is usually a result of wound breakdown, pharyngocutaneous fistula and infection.

Introduction: Sepsis is the leading cause of acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill patients. The Kidney in Sepsis and Septic Shock (Kid-SSS) study evaluated the value of proenkephalin A 119-159 (penkid)-a sensitive biomarker of glomerular function, drawn within 24 hours upon intensive care unit (ICU) admission and analyzed using a chemiluminescence immunoassay-for kidney events in sepsis and septic shock.

Chemoradiotherapy has emerged as a gold standard in advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). Purpose Transplant recipients who develop cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas are at high risk for multiple subsequent skin cancers. Background: The value of transient elastography for the non-invasive diagnosis of alcohol-related liver fibrosis is subject to debate. We did an individual patient data (IPD) meta-analysis to determine specific diagnostic cutoff values for liver stiffness in alcohol-related fibrosis, and to assess the effect of aminotransferase concentrations, bilirubin concentrations, and presence of asymptomatic and non-severe alcoholic hepatitis on liver stiffness.

Methods: We searched for studies that included patients with alcohol-related liver disease, liver biopsy, and transient elastography, and with a statistical method for determining the diagnostic cutoffs for alcohol-induced liver fibrosis on the basis of the FibroScan results, in PubMed between Jan 1, 2000, and Sept 30, 2017.

We describe a 36-year-old patient who was admitted to the emergency ward for acute dyspnea due to a spontaneous pneumothorax. He was successfully drained but shortly after presented a severe hypoxemia due to pulmonary oedema secondary to pulmonary re-expansion. The physiopathology behind this complication is still unknown.

The development of recombinant factor VIII (rFVIII) was initially driven by the necessity to treat hemophilia A (HA) patients with FVIII concentrates without the risk of transmitting infectious agents. Over the last three decades the safety of rFVIII has been further improved by completely removing animal or human proteins from the manufacturing process, so that patients would not be exposed to known or emerging pathogens. Recent efforts have concentrated on improving the expression of rFVIII, reducing its immunogenicity and enhancing its pharmacokinetic (PK) behavior.

Although BRAF inhibitor monotherapy yields response rates >50% in -mutant melanoma, only approximately 5% of patients with colorectal cancer respond. Preclinical studies suggest that the lack of efficacy in colorectal cancer is due to adaptive feedback reactivation of MAPK signaling, often mediated by EGFR. This clinical trial evaluated BRAF and EGFR inhibition with dabrafenib (D) + panitumumab (P) ± MEK inhibition with trametinib (T) to achieve greater MAPK suppression and improved efficacy in 142 patients with colorectal cancer.

With the routine use of intensity modulated radiation therapy for the treatment of head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma allowing highly conformed dose distribution, there is an increasing need for refining both the selection and the delineation of gross tumor volumes (GTV). In this framework, molecular imaging with positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging offers the opportunity to improve diagnostic accuracy and to integrate tumor biology mainly related to the assessment of tumor cell density, tumor hypoxia, and tumor proliferation into the treatment planning equation. Such integration, however, requires a deep comprehension of the technical and methodological issues related to image acquisition, reconstruction, and segmentation.
