The sharp increase in obesity prevalence worldwide is mainly attributable to changes in physical activity and eating behavior but the metabolic and clinical impacts of these obesogenic conditions vary between sexes and genetic backgrounds. This warrants personalized treatments of obesity and its complications, which require a thorough understanding of the diversity of metabolic responses to high-fat diet intake. By analyzing nine genetically diverse mouse strains, we show that much like humans, mice exhibit a huge variety of physiological and biochemical responses to high-fat diet.

Liquid biopsies including circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and cell-free DNA (cfDNA) have enabled minimally invasive characterization of many cancers, but are rarely analyzed together. Understanding the detectability and genomic concordance of CTCs and cfDNA may inform their use in guiding cancer precision medicine. Here, we report the detectability of cfDNA and CTCs in blood samples from 107 and 56 patients with multiple myeloma (MM), respectively.

Aim: The abdominal incision for specimen extraction could trigger postoperative pain after laparoscopic colorectal resections (LCRs). Continuous wound infusion (CWI) of ropivacaine may be a valuable option for postoperative analgesia. This study was undertaken to evaluate the potential benefits of ropivacaine CWI on pain relief, metabolic stress reaction, prevention of wound hyperalgesia and residual incisional pain after LCR.

Background: Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) has beneficial pulmonary effects but may worsen the hemodynamic repercussions induced by pneumoperitoneum (PNP) in patients undergoing laparoscopic liver resection. However, by increasing intraluminal vena cava (VC) pressures, PEEP may prevent PNP-induced VC collapse. The aim of this study was to test the validity of this hypothesis.

Patients flow in outpatient surgical unit is a major issue with regards to resource utilization, overall case load and patient satisfaction. An electronic Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) was used to document the overall time spent by the patients between their admission and discharge from the unit. The objective of this study was to evaluate how a RFID-based data collection system could provide an accurate prediction of the actual time for the patient to be discharged from the ambulatory surgical unit after surgery.

Abdominal surgery induces postoperative ventilatory dysfunction related to a combination of reflex diaphragmatic inhibition, respiratory muscle injury and pain. The role of pain is difficult to isolate from other components. Thoracic epidural analgesia using local anesthetics is able to partially reverse the diaphragmatic dysfunction.

It has recently been shown that P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is inducible by rifampicin in the human gut as shown in intestinal biopsies. The present study was performed in order to test the hypothesis that human peripheral lymphocytes can be used to assess such an inducibility. We also assessed inter- and intra-individual variability of P-gp expression and activity in peripheral lymphocytes.

Intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (ISA) characterizes a group of beta blockers that are able to stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors (agonist effect) and to oppose the stimulating effects of catecholamines (antagonist effect) in a competitive way. Partial agonists are ligands that elicit a submaximal response when bound to beta receptors at maximal occupancy. In the isolated rat atrium, acebutolol produces a maximal stimulatory effect that is only 17 +/- 8% of the maximal effect induced by the full beta agonist isoproterenol.
