Introduction Rising prevalence rates of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), particularly in younger populations, have made early-onset T2DM (diagnosed before age 40) an increasingly significant health concern. Early-onset T2DM is often associated with more rapid progression and increased complications, including cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, its specific impact on cardiovascular outcomes remains inadequately understood, particularly compared to T2DM in older populations.

Introduction: Pulsed-field ablation (PFA) is a novel modality for pulmonary vein isolation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We describe the initial uptake and experience of PFA using a pentaspline catheter across selected National Health Service England (NHSE) centres.

Methods: Data collected by NHSE Specialised Services Development Programme regarding AF ablation procedures using a single-shot, pentaspline, multielectrode PFA catheter (FARAWAVE, Boston Scientific) between June 2022 and August 2024 were aggregated and analysed to examine procedural metrics, acute efficacy and safety outcomes over 3-month follow-up.

Homeopathy was founded some two hundred years ago by Dr Samuel Christian Hahnemann. Over time, it has grown to be among the most frequently used forms of alternative medicine in Europe and the USA. It is underpinned by the principle of 'like cures like', where highly diluted substances are used for therapeutic purposes, by producing similar symptoms to when the substance is used in healthy people.

This study evaluated patient-reported outcomes (PROs) of Medicine Access Programmes (MAPs) for Australian metastatic breast cancer patients on ribociclib. Limited patient awareness of MAP enrolment was identified, emphasising the need for improved education and consent processes. Most patients expressed gratitude for accessing non-funded medications and perceived enhanced medication adherence as a key benefit.

Article Synopsis
  • The NATALEE trial evaluated the effectiveness of ribociclib in combination with nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitors (NSAI) compared to NSAI alone over three years for treating HR+/HER2- early breast cancer patients.
  • The study involved 5,101 patients who were randomized to receive either ribociclib plus NSAI or NSAI alone, with the primary focus on invasive disease-free survival (iDFS).
  • Results showed that ribociclib plus NSAI significantly improved iDFS, with 90.7% of patients remaining disease-free compared to 87.6% for those on NSAI alone, while safety profiles remained consistent with no new safety concerns.

Significance: Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is an emerging technology that holds high promise in a wide range of clinical applications, but standardized methods for system testing are lacking, impeding objective device performance evaluation, calibration, and inter-device comparisons. To address this shortfall, this tutorial offers readers structured guidance in developing tissue-mimicking phantoms for photoacoustic applications with potential extensions to certain acoustic and optical imaging applications.

Aim: The tutorial review aims to summarize recommendations on phantom development for PAI applications to harmonize efforts in standardization and system calibration in the field.

Background: Chronic pain after minimally invasive inguinal hernia repair with mesh can have debilitating effects on quality of life (QOL), limiting daily activities and ability to work. Many medical and surgical options for treatment have been proposed, however there is no consensus on the role of mesh explantation in the management of these patients.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all patients who underwent groin mesh removal by robotic or laparoscopic approach from July 2012 to July 2023 at our institution.
