Objective: Altered immune, inflammatory, and angiogenesis responses have been noticed in head and neck cancer, and many of these responses have been associated with a poor clinical outcome. The objective of this study was to evaluate several immune mediators in the sera of patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the larynx undergoing curative surgery in connection with clinicopathologic factors.

Methods: Multiplex analysis of cytokines (interleukin [IL]-6, IL-8, IL-10, tumour necrosis factor α [TNF-α], interferon-γ [IFN-γ]), chemokines (monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 [MCP-1], macrophage inflammatory protein 1α [MIP-1α], and epithelial neutrophil-activating protein 78 [ENA-78]), and growth factors (vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor) in the serum of patients with laryngeal cancer and healthy controls was performed using xMap technology.

Does the motor cortex influence denervation in ALS? EMG studies of muscles with both contralateral and bilateral corticospinal innervation.

Clin Neurophysiol

March 2011

Department of Neurosciences, St. Maria Hospital, Lisbon, Portugal; Department of Neurology, Royal London Hospital, Queen Mary School of Medicine, University of London, London, UK.

Objectives: To evaluate the pattern of degeneration of lower motor neuron progression in ALS in relation to the contralateral and ipsilateral corticospinal innervation of the tested muscles.

Methods: EMG evaluation of the sternomastoid and trapezius muscles on one or both sides, and transcranial magnetic stimulation to record motor evoked responses from these muscles after ipsilateral and contralateral cortical stimulation. The sternomastoid muscle receives corticospinal input from both hemispheres, but the trapezius only a contralateral corticospinal innervation; however the power motor innervation of both these muscles is derived from the same spinal nucleus, and the same motor nerve.

Background: New sphincter-saving approaches have been applied in the treatment of perianal fistula in order to avoid the risk of fecal incontinence. Among them, the fibrin glue technique is popular because of its simplicity and repeatability. The aim of this review is to compare the fibrin glue application to surgery alone, considering the healing and complication rates.

Virtual colonoscopy in stenosing colorectal cancer.

Ann Surg Innov Res

November 2009

Department of General Surgical, St Maria Hospital, Terni, University of Perugia, Perugia, Italy.

Background: Between 5 and 10% of the patients undergoing a colonoscopy cannot have a complete procedure mainly due to stenosing neoplastic lesion of rectum or distal colon. Nevertheless the elective surgical treatment concerning the stenosis is to be performed after the pre-operative assessment of the colonic segments upstream the cancer. The aim of this study is to illustrate our experience with the Computed Tomographic Colonography (CTC) for the pre-operative assessment of the entire colon in the patients with stenosing colorectal cancers.

Exploring the immune response against Mycobacterium tuberculosis for a better diagnosis of the infection.

Arch Immunol Ther Exp (Warsz)

June 2010

Section of Respiratory Disease, Department of Internal Medicine, St. Maria Hospital, University of Perugia, Via T. Di Joannuccio 1, 05100 Terni, Italy.

Tuberculosis (TB) still represents a monumental problem, with more than two million deaths every year worldwide. The current diagnostics for TB offer sub-optimal accuracy both for the active and the latent form of infection and are often based on technologies unaffordable in low-income settings. The tuberculin skin test was the first diagnostic based on an acquired immune response towards Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB).

Association of paraspinal and diaphragm denervation in ALS.

Amyotroph Lateral Scler

August 2010

Department of Neurology, St Maria Hospital, Institute of Molecular Medicine, Lisbon, Portugal.

Paraspinal EMG needle examination is commonly performed in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for diagnosis. Because lower motor neurons for axial muscles and diaphragm are located medially in the anterior horn, we tested if involvement of axial muscles is associated with diaphragm weakness in ALS. Forty-four ALS patients were included with ALSFRS greater than 20/40.

Feasibility of laparoscopy for small bowel obstruction.

World J Emerg Surg

January 2009

Department of General and Emergency Surgery, St Maria Hospital, Terni, University of Perugia, Perugia, Italy.

Background: Adherential pathology is the most common cause of small bowel obstruction. Laparoscopy in small bowel obstruction does not have a clear role yet; surely it doesn't always represent only a therapeutic act, but it is always a diagnostic act, which doesn't interfere with abdominal wall integrity.

Methods: We performed a review without any language restrictions considering international literature indexed from 1980 to 2007 in Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library.
