A European Perspective on Auditory Processing Disorder-Current Knowledge and Future Research Focus.

Current notions of "hearing impairment," as reflected in clinical audiological practice, do not acknowledge the needs of individuals who have normal hearing pure tone sensitivity but who experience auditory processing difficulties in everyday life that are indexed by reduced performance in other more sophisticated audiometric tests such as speech audiometry in noise or complex non-speech sound perception. This disorder, defined as "Auditory Processing Disorder" (APD) or "Central Auditory Processing Disorder" is classified in the current tenth version of the International Classification of diseases as H93.25 and in the forthcoming beta eleventh version.

Is age a limiting factor for adaptation to cochlear implant?

The influence of age on adaptation to cochlear implant (CI) is still being contested in the literature. The aim of this study was twofold. First, hearing outcomes in quiet conditions were compared between CI users implanted over and under the age of 70 years.

Amplification-based DNA analysis in the diagnosis of prosthetic joint infection.

Microbiological cultures are moderately sensitive for diagnosing prosthetic joint infection (PJI). This study was conducted to determine whether amplification-based DNA methods applied on intraoperative samples could enhance PJI diagnosis compared with culture alone in routine surgical practice. Revision arthroplasty was performed for suspected PJI (n = 41) and osteoarthrosis control (n = 28) patients, and a diagnosis of PJI was confirmed in 34 patients.

In vitro fertilization outcome according to age and follicle-stimulating hormone levels on cycle day 3.

Purpose: In a retrospective study, the prognostic factors of in vitro fertilization outcome were studied in women of 39 years of age or older, with an elevated cycle day 3 follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level.

Methods: Ovarian stimulation was achieved with a combination of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist/human menopausal gonadotropin in a short protocol. All patients underwent FSH dosage on cycle day 3 prior to stimulation.

Outcome of in-vitro fertilization through natural cycles in poor responders.

This prospective study examines the benefits of using natural cycles instead of stimulated cycles in poor responders to in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. Eleven patients in whom puncture was cancelled or who failed to conceive because of a poor response were included in the analysis. The data for natural cycles (n = 16) were compared with data obtained during previous stimulated cycles (n = 25) in the same women.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in endometriosis.

Angiogenesis is likely to be involved in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. According to the transplantation theory, when the exfoliated endometrium is attached to the peritoneal layer, the establishment of a new blood supply is essential for the survival of the endometrial implant and development of endometriosis. From the known angiogenic factors, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has emerged as a pivotally important regulator of normal angiogenesis and pathological neovascularization.
