Pain is the hallmark symptom causing morbidity for people with sickle cell disease (SCD) and may present as nociceptive, neuropathic, or mixed type pain. Neuropathic pain (NP) is underrecognized and undertreated in patients with SCD and is associated with decreased patient-reported quality of life. Surveys were completed by clinicians caring for adolescents with SCD in the outpatient setting.

Background: The modified Blalock-Taussig-Thomas shunt is the gold standard palliation for securing pulmonary blood flow in infants with ductal-dependent pulmonary blood flow. Recently, the ductus arteriosus stent (DAS) has become a viable alternative.

Methods And Results: This was a retrospective multicenter study of neonates ≤30 days undergoing DAS or Blalock-Taussig-Thomas shunt placement between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2020 at hospitals reporting to the Pediatric Health Information Systems database.

Background Intensive monitoring has been associated with a lower death rate between the Norwood operation and superior cavopulmonary connection, possibly due to early identification and effective treatment of residual anatomic lesions like recoarctation before lasting harm occurs. Methods and Results Neonates undergoing a Norwood operation and receiving interstage care at a single center between January 1, 2005, and September 18, 2020, were studied. In those with recoarctation, we evaluated association of era ([1] preinterstage monitoring, [2] a transitional phase, [3] current era) and likelihood of hemodynamic compromise (progression to moderate or greater ventricular dysfunction/atrioventricular valve regurgitation, initiation/escalation of vasoactive/respiratory support, cardiac arrest preceding catheterization, or interstage death with recoarctation on autopsy).

Osteoblast Wnt/-catenin signaling conditions skeletal development and health. Bone formation is stimulated when on the osteoblast surface a Wnt binds to low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) or 6 (LRP6), in turn coupled to a frizzled receptor. Sclerostin and dickkopf1 inhibit osteogenesis if either links selectively to the first β-propeller of LRP5 or LRP6, thereby disassociating these cognate co-receptors from the frizzled receptor.

Regional anesthesia between the pectoralis major and minor was first described in 2011 as an alternative method to paravertebral blocks or epidurals for post-operative mastectomies. Since then, the use of pectoral nerve (PECS) blocks for post-operative pain management following thoracotomy, sternotomy, and other procedures in the anterior thorax has increased. While experience with this block is growing, the current understanding of its use in pediatric patients is limited.

Background Advancements in the field, including novel procedures and multiple interventions, require an updated approach to accurately assess patient risk. This study aims to modernize patient hemodynamic and procedural risk classification through the creation of risk assessment tools to be used in congenital cardiac catheterization. Methods and Results Data were collected for all cases performed at sites participating in the C3PO (Congenital Cardiac Catheterization Project on Outcomes) multicenter registry.

Objective: Our emergency department (ED) traditionally relied on urethral catheterization to obtain urine cultures when evaluating infants for urinary tract infections (UTIs). Catheterization is associated with adverse effects, and recent studies have demonstrated clean-catch urine methods can be successfully used to obtain urine cultures. We pursued a quality improvement (QI) initiative aimed at decreasing the frequency of urethral catheterizations in our ED by using an established clean-catch technique to obtain infant urine cultures.

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes of the SHILLA GROWTH GUIDANCE SYSTEM and "intermittent distraction growing rod" (IDGR) in the treatment of children (less than 10 y of age) with progressive spinal deformity. This was a multicenter retrospective study of the SHILLA used as an alternative treatment to IDGR to support an HDE submission for Food and Drug Administration approval.

Methods: Inclusion criteria were progressive scoliosis in a patient less than 10 years of age at index procedure.
