Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the effectiveness and safety of using fentanyl for analgosedation versus propofol for traditional sedation in critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation.
  • Results showed that the duration of mechanical ventilation and ICU length of stay were similar for both groups, but significantly fewer patients on fentanyl needed additional opioid pain relief compared to those on propofol.
  • The findings suggest that fentanyl may provide better pain management without impacting ventilation duration or increasing delirium risk, making it a viable sedation option in critical care settings.

Extramedullary recurrence in multiple myeloma patients has been reported after both autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation and, more recently, after treatment with so-called new drugs with potent antimyeloma activity. Only a very few sizable reports focused on its clinical presentation and its incidence, which may be highly underestimated, and most observations are based on single patients reported from several institutions. Given the unusual sites of recurrence, diagnosis may be rather difficult and delayed treatment may play a relevant role in prognosis.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus laryngitis.

Ann Otol Rhinol Laryngol

September 2010

Department of Otolaryngology, St John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Madison Heights, Michigan, USA.

Infections due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have become more prevalent, in part because of the emergence and spread of community-acquired MRSA. This trend is particularly concerning because of the significant rates of morbidity and mortality associated with MRSA infections, and because MRSA strains are often resistant to many classes of antibiotics. Reports of infections of the head and neck, including wound infections, cellulitis, sinusitis, otitis media, and otitis externa, are well documented.
