Background: Symptoms may persist in a retained aganglionic segment of the colon after corrective (pull-through) surgery in Hirschsprung disease (HD). Thus, it is important to assess the proximal doughnut for innervation abnormalities intraoperatively by frozen sections stained with conventional haematoxylin and eosin stain and supported by rapid acetylcholinesterase (AChE) histochemistry. When the doughnut is proximal to the sigmoid colon, AChE is not useful and requires ratification by yet another rapid technique and hence this study.

The success of immunotherapy using immune checkpoint blockade in solid tumors and in relapsed/refractory classical Hodgkin lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia holds promise for targeted therapy in hematologic malignancies. Because efficacy of immunomodulatory therapy is correlated with numbers of cells that express programmed death (PD-1) ligands, we evaluated the expression of PD-L1 and PD-L2 proteins using immunohistochemistry in more than 702 diagnostic lymphoma biopsies. In classical Hodgkin lymphoma, PD-L1 and PD-L2 were expressed in 82% and 41% of cases, respectively, and PD-L1 but not PD-L2 expression correlated with Epstein-Barr virus in tumor cells.

Thalidomide-induced Stroke in a Child With Thalassemia Major.

J Pediatr Hematol Oncol

November 2017

Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, St. John's Medical College and Hospital, Bangalore, India.

β-thalassemia major is a hereditary anemia resulting from defects in β-globin production. It is also characterized by a hypercoagulable state with an increased risk of thrombosis. Thalidomide, a drug known for its immunomodulating and antiangiogenic properties, has recently been demonstrated to induce γ-globin gene expression and to increase the proliferation of erythroid cells.

Pharmacovigilance is the art and science of detection, understanding and prevention of adverse drug reactions and not merely a critical analysis of prescriptions and errors. This field starts with reporting by clinicians of a suspected adverse drug reaction (ADR) to the pharmacologist followed by joint causality analysis and ends at the application of new information by a clinician for benefit of patients. There are a number of ways, which can be utilised for reporting adverse effects using pen and paper format to software applications for smart phones.

Circulating nucleic acids: An analysis of their occurrence in malignancies.

Biomed Rep

January 2017

Department of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology, St. John's Medical College and Hospital, St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka 560034, India.

Through a regulated or fortuitous phenomenon, small portions of cell nucleic acids are thrown into circulation. Since the discovery of these circulating nucleic acids (CNAs) in 1948, numerous studies have been published to elucidate their clinical implications in multifarious diseases. Scientists have now discovered disease-specific genetic aberrations, such as mutations, microsatellite alterations, epigenetic modulations (including aberrant methylation), as well as viral DNA/RNA from nucleic acids in plasma and serum.

Non-surgical interventions for treating heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) in women with bleeding disorders.

Cochrane Database Syst Rev

November 2016

Department of Psychiatry, St. John's Medical College and Hospital, Sarjapur Road, Bangalore, Karnataka, India, 560008.

Background: Heavy menstrual bleeding without an organic lesion is mainly due to an imbalance of the various hormones which have a regulatory effect on the menstrual cycle. Another cause of heavy menstrual bleeding with no pelvic pathology, is the presence of an acquired or inherited bleeding disorder. The haemostatic system has a central role in controlling the amount and the duration of menstrual bleeding, thus abnormally prolonged or profuse bleeding does occur in most women affected by bleeding disorders.

December 2016

Clinical Proteomics Unit, Division of Molecular Medicine, St. John's Research Institute, St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences, 100ft Road, Koramangala, Bangalore, 560034, India.

Hemoglobinopathies are caused by point mutation in globin gene that results in structural variant of hemoglobin. While 7 % of world populations are carrier of hemoglobinopathies, the prevalence of the disease varies between 3 to 17 % across different population groups in India. In a diagnostic laboratory, alkaline gel electrophoresis and cation exchange-based HPLC (CE-HPLC) are most widely used techniques for characterization of hemoglobin variants.
