Background: Whether nutrition therapy benefits all burn victims equally is unknown. To identify patients who will benefit the most from optimal nutrition, the modified Nutrition Risk in Critically Ill (mNUTRIC) Score has been validated in the Intensive Care Unit. However, the utility of mNUTRIC in severe burn victims is unknown.

Background: The objective of this study was to identify the self-reported barriers to and facilitators of prescribing low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) thromboprophylaxis in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Methods: We conducted an interviewer-administered survey of 4 individuals per ICU (the ICU director, a bedside pharmacist, a thromboprophylaxis research coordinator, and physician site investigator) regarding LMWH thromboprophylaxis for medical-surgical patients in 27 ICUs in Canada and the United States. Items were generated by the research team and adapted from previous surveys, audits, qualitative studies, and quality improvement research.

Study Objective: To determine the efficacy of laparoscopic ultrasound (LUS) as compared with contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CE-MRI) and transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) in detection of uterine myomas.

Design: Retrospective study of imaging methods used in a trial of LUS-guided radiofrequency volumetric thermal ablation in women with symptomatic myomas (Canadian Task Force classification II-2).

Setting: Eleven medical university or private outpatient surgery clinics in the United States (nine sites) and Latin America (two sites).

Objective: To estimate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic ultrasound-guided radiofrequency volumetric thermal ablation of uterine myomas in symptomatic women.

Methods: A cohort of 135 premenopausal symptomatic women with uterine myomas, uteri 14 weeks of gestation-sized or less with no single myoma exceeding 7 cm, and objectively confirmed heavy menstrual bleeding participated in this prospective, international trial of outpatient laparoscopic ultrasound-guided radiofrequency volumetric thermal ablation. Bleeding outcomes were measured by alkaline hematin analysis at baseline and again at 3, 6, and 12 months posttreatment.

Laparoscopy-assisted vaginal hysterectomy.

J Gynecol Surg

August 1992

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, St. John's Mercy Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri.

Intraoperative laparoscopy was used to evaluate pelvic pathology in 46 patients who had been anesthetized for abdominal hysterectomy. Because traditional indicators--clinical history, pelvic examination, and ultrasound studies--suggested the presence of more serious pelvic pathology, these patients were considered poor candidates for vaginal hysterectomy. Laparoscopic findings, however, revealed that 42 of the 46 (91%) could undergo uncomplicated vaginal surgery (which they did).
