On July 18, 2022, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) notified CDC of detection of poliovirus type 2 in stool specimens from an unvaccinated immunocompetent young adult from Rockland County, New York, who was experiencing acute flaccid weakness. The patient initially experienced fever, neck stiffness, gastrointestinal symptoms, and limb weakness. The patient was hospitalized with possible acute flaccid myelitis (AFM).

Moving towards intelligent telemedicine: Computer vision measurement of human movement.

Background: Telemedicine video consultations are rapidly increasing globally, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This presents opportunities to use computer vision technologies to augment clinician visual judgement because video cameras are so ubiquitous in personal devices and new techniques, such as DeepLabCut (DLC) can precisely measure human movement from smartphone videos. However, the accuracy of DLC to track human movements in videos obtained from laptop cameras, which have a much lower FPS, has never been investigated; this is a critical gap because patients use laptops for most telemedicine consultations.

Essential tremor (ET) is the most common cause of tremor in older adults. However, it is increasingly recognised that 30-50% of ET cases are misdiagnosed. Late-onset ET, when tremor begins after the age of 60, is particularly likely to be misdiagnosed and there is mounting evidence that it may be a distinct clinical entity, perhaps better termed 'ageing-related tremor'.

Evaluation of measles IgM antibody detection assays during the 2018-2019 outbreak in New York State.

Although measles was eliminated in the United States in 2000, a severe outbreak occurred between October 2018 and September 2019. New York was especially hard hit. Serology played an integral role in determining immune status (IgG) and identifying, along with molecular analyses, acute measles infections (IgM).

First reported case of hydrocephalus in jointly diagnosed bacterial meningitis and a colloid cyst: how Ockham's razor became Hickam's dictum.

We report the first case in the literature of acute hydrocephalus due to a simultaneous diagnosis of bacterial (not asceptic) meningitis and a colloid cyst. Diagnosing disease is the cornerstone skill of a medical practitioner. Both education and experience allow for sharpening of this skill throughout years of medical practice.

SARS-CoV-2 variants shaped the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic and the discourse around effective control measures. Evaluating the threat posed by a new variant is essential for adapting response efforts when community transmission is detected. In this study, we compare the dynamics of two variants, Alpha and Iota, by integrating genomic surveillance data to estimate the effective reproduction number (R) of the variants.

Cognitive inhibition tasks interfere with dual-task walking and increase prefrontal cortical activity more than working memory tasks in young and older adults.

Background: Prior work suggests there may be greater reliance on executive function for walking in older people. The pre-frontal cortex (PFC), which controls aspects of executive function, is known to be active during dual-task walking (DTW). However, there is debate on how PFC activity during DTW is impacted by ageing and the requirements of the cognitive task.

Acute Hepatitis and Adenovirus Infection Among Children - Alabama, October 2021-February 2022.

During October-November 2021, clinicians at a children's hospital in Alabama identified five pediatric patients with severe hepatitis and adenovirus viremia upon admission. In November 2021, hospital clinicians, the Alabama Department of Public Health, the Jefferson County Department of Health, and CDC began an investigation. This activity was reviewed by CDC and conducted consistent with applicable federal law and CDC policy.

Myths and Misunderstandings About Child Sexual Abuse in Criminal Investigations.

Researchers have established that rape myths shape perceptions of victims and perpetrators in criminal cases. Researchers have devoted less attention to exploring the impact of child sexual abuse (CSA) myths in court. While we know that jurors believe myths and misconceptions about the nature of CSA, no work has explored how these myths appear during the prosecution of CSA cases.

Vaccine Strain and Wild-Type Clades of Varicella-Zoster Virus in Central Nervous System and Non-CNS Disease, New York State, 2004-2019.

Since the introduction of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) vaccine in the United States in 1995, there has been a dramatic decrease in both the number and severity of varicella cases. However, VZV surveillance data and information on the VZV clade distribution in central nervous system (CNS) disease and non-CNS disease in New York State is not available. To investigate this, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from patients with encephalitis or meningitis and non-CSF samples from patients with non-CNS disease manifestations consistent with VZV, collected from 2004 to 2019, were tested with molecular VZV assays.

Amplification Artifact in SARS-CoV-2 Omicron Sequences Carrying P681R Mutation, New York, USA.

Of 379 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 samples collected in New York, USA, we detected 86 Omicron variant sequences containing Delta variant mutation P681R. Probable explanations were co-infection with 2 viruses or contamination/amplification artifact. Repeated library preparation with fewer cycles showed the P681R calls were artifactual.

Perceptions of Common Rape: How Rape Myth Acceptance, Victim Gender, and Victim Resistance Affect Victim and Perpetrator Blame Attributions in Party Rape and Date Rape.

Among rape perception studies, common types of male rape remain understudied. Using a randomized vignette design, I sampled 622 college students from a large Southwestern university to examine how victim gender and victim resistance influence blame attributions in party rape and date rape. Results revealed important interactions between victim gender, victim resistance, and rape type.

Since 2015, the United States has experienced a resurgence in the number of mumps cases and outbreaks in fully vaccinated populations. These outbreaks have occurred predominantly in close-quarter settings, such as camps, colleges, and detention centers. Phylogenetic analysis of 758 mumps-positive samples from outbreaks across the United States identified 743 (98%) as genotype G based on sequence analysis of the mumps small hydrophobic (SH) gene.
