J Surg Res

November 2024

Division of Trauma, Burns and Surgical Critical Care, Department of Surgery, University of California Irvine, Irvine, California. Electronic address:

Introduction: Rib fractures are associated with significant pain and morbidity. Intercostal nerve cryoablation (INCA) offers targeted, prolonged pain relief for these patients. Over the last decade, more patients have undergone surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) after injury.

Background And Aims: Screening colonoscopy has significantly contributed to the reduction of the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) and its associated mortality, with adenoma detection rate (ADR) as the quality marker. To increase the ADR, various solutions have been proposed including the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and employing second observers during colonoscopies. In the interest of AI improving ADR independently, without a second observer, and the operational similarity between AI and second observer, this network meta-analysis aims at evaluating the effectiveness of AI, second observer, and a single observer in improving ADR.

Background: Controversy regarding the definition of the upper limit of normal (ULN) for dilated mid-ascending aorta (mAA) stems from variation in criteria, based on several small-sized studies with small datasets of normal subjects (DONS). The present study was carried out to demonstrate this variation in the prevalence of mAA dilation and to identify the optimal definition by creating the largest DONS.

Methods: Echocardiographic studies of patients ≥ 15 years of age performed at a large tertiary care center over 4 years ( = 49,330) were retrospectively evaluated.

Preterm prelabor rupture of membranes in singletons: maternal and neonatal outcomes.

J Perinat Med

July 2023

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, Beaumont Medical Center, Detroit, MI, USA.

Objectives: To determine the effect of gestational age at delivery on maternal and neonatal outcomes in preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) and assess various predictors of neonatal and infant mortality in these pregnancies.

Methods: United States birth data from CDC-National Center for Health Statistics natality database for years 2004-2008 was used to identify singleton pregnancies with PPROM and delivery from 32 0/7 to 36 6/7 weeks. Controls were singletons at 37-40 weeks, without PPROM.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess and compare knowledge, self-awareness, and accuracy of perceived risks and weight status among overweight and obese women.

Methods: This study was a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional questionnaire study of overweight and obese pregnant women who sought a routine first-trimester screening ultrasound. Those with a pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m (calculated using self-reported height and weight) were included.

A 60-year-old, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative, homosexual male presented to our colorectal clinic with abdominal pain for three weeks followed by persistent watery diarrhea refractory to loperamide. He had no history of recent travel, no known infectious contacts, and his last colonoscopy nine years prior was within normal limits. After one episode of hematochezia, computed tomography of the abdomen/pelvis was performed demonstrating colitis and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related changes to the lung bases.

Telemedicine in its many forms has been utilized across numerous medical specialties to facilitate and expand access to medical care, optimize existing healthcare infrastructure to encourage patient-provider communication, reduce provider burnout, and improve patient surveillance. Since the emergence of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic there has been widening of existing socioeconomic disparities in healthcare access for those with chronic respiratory diseases, sparking interest in expanding the use of telemedicine modalities to enhance access to pulmonology specialist care, pulmonary rehabilitation, symptom monitoring, and early identification of clinical exacerbations. Furthermore, the use of telemedicine has been expanded into the intensive care setting to improve patient outcomes and offset provider demands following the increase in critically ill patients due to COVID-19.

While colonic leiomyomas are common, leiomyosarcomas of the GI tract are rare. Increased mitotic rate, as well as lymph node involvement, portend a worse prognosis in leiomyosarcomas. They can arise anywhere along the GI tract, but anal canal occurrence is extremely rare.

PET Imaging for Head and Neck Cancers.

Radiol Clin North Am

September 2021

Dean's Office, Otago Medical School, University of Otago, 201 Great King Street, Dunedin 9016, New Zealand.

Head and neck cancers are commonly encountered cancers in clinical practice in the United States. Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) PET/CT has been clinically applied in staging, occult primary tumor detection, treatment planning, response assessment, follow-up, recurrent disease detection, and prognosis prediction in these patients. Alternative PET tracers remain investigational and can provide additional valuable information such as radioresistant tumor hypoxia.

The Role of Telemedicine in Extending and Enhancing Medical Management of the Patient with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Medicina (Kaunas)

July 2021

Pulmonary and Critical Care Section, Providence Veterans Administration Medical Center, Brown University, Providence, RI 02908, USA.

Medical management of a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patient must incorporate a broadened and holistic approach to achieve optimal outcomes. This is best achieved with integrated care, which is based on the chronic care model of disease management, proactively addressing the patient's unique medical, social, psychological, and cognitive needs along the trajectory of the disease. While conceptually appealing, integrated care requires not only a different approach to disease management, but considerably more health care resources.
