Background: Thrombosis and inflammation may contribute to the risk of death and complications among patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). We hypothesized that therapeutic-dose anticoagulation may improve outcomes in noncritically ill patients who are hospitalized with Covid-19.

Methods: In this open-label, adaptive, multiplatform, controlled trial, we randomly assigned patients who were hospitalized with Covid-19 and who were not critically ill (which was defined as an absence of critical care-level organ support at enrollment) to receive pragmatically defined regimens of either therapeutic-dose anticoagulation with heparin or usual-care pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis.

Oxidative stress is a hallmark of numerous airway diseases, contributing to extensive cell and tissue damage. Cell membranes and the airway mucosal lining are rich in phospholipids that are particularly susceptible to oxidative attack, producing bioactive molecules including oxidized phosphatidylcholines (OxPCs). With the recent discovery of elevated OxPCs in patients with asthma after allergen challenge, we hypothesized that OxPCs directly contribute to disease by inducing airway epithelial cell dysfunction.

Swertisin, a novel SGLT2 inhibitor, with improved glucose homeostasis for effective diabetes therapy.

Arch Biochem Biophys

October 2021

Molecular Endocrinology and Stem Cell Research Laboratory, Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara, Gujarat, 390021, India. Electronic address:

Failing pancreas and subsequent loss of pancreatic β cells worsen diabetic conditions which are further alleviated by the mounting up of glucose levels. Inhibition of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) in the kidney responsible for glucose reabsorption strikingly reduces blood glucose levels. Bioactive swertisin showed a promising glucose-lowering effect.

Metabolic alterations in malignant cells play a vital role in tumor initiation, proliferation, and metastasis. Biofluids from patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harbor metabolic biomarkers with potential clinical applications. In this study, we assessed the changes in the metabolic profile of patients with early-stage NSCLC using mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy before and after surgical resection.

Standard heart failure (HF) therapies have failed to improve cardiac function or survival in HF patients with right ventricular (RV) dysfunction suggesting a divergence in the molecular mechanisms of RV vs. left ventricular (LV) failure. Here we aimed to investigate interventricular differences in sarcomeric regulation and function in experimental myocardial infarction (MI)-induced HF with reduced LV ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Oxidative Stress as A Mechanism for Functional Alterations in Cardiac Hypertrophy and Heart Failure.

Antioxidants (Basel)

Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre, Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology, Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6, Canada.

Although heart failure due to a wide variety of pathological stimuli including myocardial infarction, pressure overload and volume overload is associated with cardiac hypertrophy, the exact reasons for the transition of cardiac hypertrophy to heart failure are not well defined. Since circulating levels of several vasoactive hormones including catecholamines, angiotensin II, and endothelins are elevated under pathological conditions, it has been suggested that these vasoactive hormones may be involved in the development of both cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. At initial stages of pathological stimuli, these hormones induce an increase in ventricular wall tension by acting through their respective receptor-mediated signal transduction systems and result in the development of cardiac hypertrophy.

Cardiac fibrosis: Pathobiology and therapeutic targets.

Cell Signal

September 2021

Department of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Arizona College of Medicine, Phoenix, AZ, USA. Electronic address:

Cardiac fibrosis is characteristic of the end stage in nearly all forms of heart disease. Accumulation of extracellular matrix in the myocardium leads to increased risk of arrhythmia and impaired cardiac function, and ultimately progression to heart failure. Despite the critical need to slow or reverse development of cardiac fibrosis to maintain cardiac function, there are no approved therapies that directly target the extracellular matrix.

Rat-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells-Derived Cardiac Myocytes in a Cell Culture Dish.

Methods Mol Biol

July 2022

Division of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Sciences, Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL, USA.

Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells are genetically reprogrammed somatic cells that exhibit embryonic stem cell-like characteristics such as self-renewal and pluripotency. These cells have broad differentiation capability to convert into diverse cell types that make up the primary germ layers during embryonic development. iPS cells can spontaneously differentiate and form cell aggregates termed embryoid bodies (EBs) in the absence of differentiation inhibitory factors.

Sodium: What is the right amount?

Adv Food Nutr Res

October 2021

Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB, Canada; Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine, (CCARM), St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre, Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Electronic address:

Sodium is an important nutrient for good health, but excessive amounts in the diet are known to cause an array of complications, including hypertension and exacerbating kidney disease. The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the most current evidence as it relates to sodium intake, since there have been some recent reports contradicting current recommended guidelines. Since the majority of people consuming a typical Western diet exceed recommended sodium levels, it is of utmost importance to determine if this is problematic in otherwise healthy populations, or if sodium should only be restricted in those with underlying health conditions.

It is now widely recognized that COVID-19 illness can be associated with significant intermediate and potentially longer-term physical limitations. The term, "long COVID-19" is used to define any patient with persistent symptoms after acute COVID-19 infection (ie, after 4 weeks). It is postulated that cardiac injury might be linked to symptoms that persist after resolution of acute infection, as part of this syndrome.

Cardiac function is highly reliant on mitochondrial oxidative metabolism and quality control. The circadian gene is critically linked to vital physiological processes including mitochondrial fission, fusion and bioenergetics; however, little is known of how the gene regulates these vital processes in the heart. Herein, we identified a putative circadian CLOCK-mitochondrial interactome that gates an adaptive survival response during myocardial ischemia.

The coronavirus disease that presumably began in 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and has resulted in a pandemic. Initially, COVID-19 was thought to only affect respiration. However, accumulating evidence shows a wide range of neurological symptoms are also associated with COVID-19, such as anosmia/ageusia, headaches, seizures, demyelination, mental confusion, delirium, and coma.
