Background: The quality of life after surgery for diverticular disease is mainly linked to the presence and severity of postoperative defecatory disorders. These symptoms are frequently related to the sigmoid and rectal denervation following the arterial ligation. The preservation of Inferior Mesenteric Artery performing colorectal resections seems to reduce denervation, which led to a better defecatory function.

: Diabetes is a well-recognised factor inducing a plethora of corneal alterations ranging from dry eye to reduced corneal sensibility, epithelial defects, and reduced cicatrisation. This cohort study aimed to assess the efficacy of a novel ophthalmic solution combining cross-linked hyaluronic acid (CHA), chondroitin sulfate (CS), and inositol (INS) in managing diabetes-induced corneal alterations. Specifically, it evaluated the solution's impact on the tear breakup time (TBUT), the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), and corneal sensitivity after three months of treatment.

Background: We performed a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) of individualized patient data (IPD) to inform the development of evidence-informed clinical practice recommendations.
Methods: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central in October 2023 to identify RCTs comparing Hartmann's resection (HR), primary resection and anastomosis (PRA), or laparoscopic peritoneal lavage (LPL) among patients with class Ib-IV Hinchey diverticulitis. Outcomes of interest were prioritized by an international, multidisciplinary panel including two patient partners.

: We evaluated the 3-year effectiveness and safety of XEN45, combined or not with phacoemulsification, in patients from the Italian XEN-Glaucoma Treatment Registry. : Data from glaucoma patients who underwent XEN45 alone or combined with phacoemulsification were analyzed. Changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) and the number of ocular hypotensive medications (OHMs) were tested with repeated measures ANOVA in last observation carried forward (LOCF) and per-protocol (PP) analyses.

: Single-agent immune checkpoint inhibitor (IO) therapy is the standard for non-oncogene-addicted advanced non-small cell lung cancer (aNSCLC) with PD-L1 tumor proportion score ≥ 50%. Smoking-induced harm generates high tumor mutation burden (H-TMB) in smoking patients (S-pts), while never-smoking patients (NS-pts) typically have low TMB (L-TMB) and are unresponsive to IO. However, the molecular characterization of NS-pts with H-TMB remains unclear.

Human milk proteins, a mixture of whey proteins including caseins, milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) proteins, various peptides, and their amino acids, play a crucial role in infant growth and development, as do non-nutritional bioactive components. The extracellular nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (eNAMPT) or visfatin is a conserved cytokine/enzyme released by many mammalian cells, related to multiple metabolic and immune processes. Few investigations have been reported about detecting visfatin in skimmed milk and the hypothesis of its potential role in regulating infant adiposity through breast milk.

Purpose: To evaluate efficacy and tolerance of short-course radiotherapy (SCRT) prior to possible chemotherapy (CHT) and surgery in 64 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer, in terms of acute and early late toxicity and survival outcomes with prognostic factors.
Methods: Sixty-four patients affected by rectal tumor were treated from 2008 to 2023 radiation therapy, with a total dose of 25 Gy in 5 fractions. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the rates of overall survival (OS), cancer specific survival (CSS), local control (LC), disease free survival (DFS) and metastasis free survival (MFS).

Purpose: To describe and clarify a possible pathogenetic origin for choroidal caverns in young healthy individuals through a topographical analysis using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA).
Methods: A cross-sectional evaluation of 44 healthy volunteers (44 eyes), aged 20-32 years with no systemic or ocular comorbidities. The topographical analysis of choroidal caverns was performed through a 15 × 15 mm volumetric scan cube using SS-OCTA (PLEX Elite 9000).

Background: Increasing evidence suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) have a potential use in addiction treatment. Few studies have assessed the impact of GLP-1RA on substance use disorder (SUD), particularly in humans. The study aimed to do systematic review of clinical trials to assess GLP-1RA's effect on reducing SUD in patients.

Multi-modal therapies for gynecological cancers management may determine a wide range of side effects which depend on therapy-related factors and patient characteristics and comorbidities. Curative or adjuvant pelvic radiotherapy is linked with acute and late toxicity due to irradiation of organs at risk, as small and large bowel, rectum, bladder, pelvic bone, vagina and bone marrow. Successful toxicity management varies with its severity, Radiation Centre practice and experience and skills of radiation oncologists.

Purpose: Concerns exist regarding the potential for transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) to yield poorer functional outcomes compared to laparoscopic TME (LaTME). The aim of this study is to assess the functional outcomes following taTME and LaTME, focusing on bowel, anorectal, and urogenital disorders and their impact on the patient's QoL.
Methods: A systematic review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and A Measurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) guidelines.

Pancreatic fluid collections (PFCs), including pancreatic pseudocysts (PPs) and walled-off pancreatic necrosis (WON), are common complications of pancreatitis and pancreatic surgery. Historically, the treatment of these conditions has relied on surgical and radiological approaches; however, it has later shifted toward an endoscopy-based approach. With the development of dedicated lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS), interventional Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)-guided procedures have become the standard approach for PFC drainage.

Purpose: To assess the sensitivity and specificity of the "triple layer sign" (TLS) (retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), neovascular tissue, and Bruch's membrane) on structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) images for the diagnosis of treatment-naïve non-exudative type-1 macular neovascularization (NE-MNV) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Design: Cross-sectional study.
Methods: Two masked retinal experts evaluated the presence of the TLS in eyes with NE-MNV and controls with an RPE elevation without exudation due to other causes than NE-MNV in AMD [e.

Background: The rapid adoption of robotic surgical systems across Europe has led to a critical gap in training and credentialing for gastrointestinal (GI) surgeons. Currently, there is no existing standardised curriculum to guide robotic training, assessment and certification for GI trainees. This manuscript describes the protocol to achieve a pan-European consensus on the essential components of a comprehensive training programme for GI robotic surgery through a five-stage process.
