Purpose: While lower extremity strength and power show a relationship to laboratory measures of walking in older adults, the relationship of strength and power to walking behaviors in a community setting is unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between lower extremity strength, peak power, power at a low relative intensity, and power at a high relative intensity to everyday walking behaviors in older adults.

Methods: Thirty community-dwelling older adults (mean age=77.

Winding up the cyanobacterial circadian clock.

Trends Microbiol

Department of Biology, St. Ambrose University, Davenport, IA 52803, USA.

The endogenous circadian clock of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus controls many cellular processes and confers an adaptive advantage on this organism in a competitive environment. To be advantageous, this internal biological oscillator must be reset daily to remain in synchrony with its environment and to transduce temporal information to control behaviors at appropriate times of day. Recent studies have discovered new components of these input and output pathways of the clock that help to 'wind up' our understanding of the clock system as a whole.

Background And Purpose: During the aging process, older adults may experience a loss of strength and power, which then may lead to functional limitations and disability. The purpose of this study was to examine how impairments in lower-extremity strength and power are related to functional limitations and disability in community-dwelling older adults.

Subjects: Thirty older adults (age [X+/-SD], 77.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare stress responses of infants born preterm during routine nursing assessments performed under two conditions. One condition incorporated a second caregiver supporting the infant in a facilitated tucked position, whereas the second condition did not.

Methods: A convenience sample of 12 infants born preterm, ages 25 to 34 weeks postconceptual age on the day of testing (mean = 30.

January 2004

Genesis Heart Institute, Cardiovascular Medicine, PC, St. Ambrose University, Davenport, IA 52803, USA.

Unlabelled: Percutaneous stenting has become the procedure of choice for treatment of obstructive atherosclerotic renal artery (RA) disease. Restenosis, however, continues to be in the range of 15-25% of treated vessels. In this study, clinical and angiographic predictors of restenosis were assessed.

The purpose of this study was to examine the intertester and intratester reliability of hand volumetric measurements comparing two different protocols. The first protocol involved three clinicians at an outpatient facility interpreting the manufacturer's volumeter instructions. At the second university site, three testers utilized a modified version of the American Society of Hand Therapists' recommended protocol.

Reaching movements are associated with widespread, nonfocal muscle activity. That activity is often assumed to play a postural role. We tested this assumption for the trunk muscles at the initiation of reaching movements with the following question.

Prior research has identified stimuli and procedures that elicit increments in plasma testosterone in copulating male rats. In the present experiment, we demonstrate that associative inhibition of copulatory behaviors in male rats is not correlated with and cannot be attributed to a conditioned suppression of testosterone. Each male rat was paired with an inaccessible estrous female for 7 min and was then given an opportunity to copulate.
