Glutamate (Glu) and Acetylcholine (ACh), are excitatory neurotransmitters, acting through ionotropic (iR) and metabotropic receptors (mR). Importantly, both neurotransmitters and their signalling are impaired in the prevalent neurodegenerative disease-Alzheimer disease (AD). Glu and its signalling cascade's influence on ACh-neurotransmission (NT) are sparsely understood.

Background: Dual antiplatelet therapy is the current standard of care after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We intended to study the pattern of use of ticagrelor in patients with acute coronary syndrome undergoing PCI and the effect of switching over to other P2Y12 receptor inhibition on clinical outcomes.

Results: All patients aged > 18 years who had been admitted with acute coronary syndrome and had been provided ticagrelor as the second antiplatelet agent were included as study participants.

Lysosomal storage diseases comprise different forms of autosomal recessive disorders from which GM1 gangliosidosis has categorized by the accumulation of complex glycolipids associated with a range of progressive neurologic phenotypes. GM1 gangliosidosis is an inherited disorder that progressively destroys nerve cells (neurons) in the brain and spinal cord. GM1 has three main types of onsets, namely infantile (type I), juvenile (type II), and adult (type III) forms.

Background: and purpose: Phytochemicals are proven to be effective in targeting numerous signaling pathways in cancer. Utilizing plant-based support in combination with currently approved chemotherapeutic strategies might prove a feasible method to improve therapeutic outcomes in cancer patients. The present study aimed to estimate the effect of turmeric supplementation on quality of life (QoL) and hematological parameters in breast cancer patients on Paclitaxel chemotherapy.

Objectives: Dynamic pupillometry is a simple screening tool for quantifying pupillary light reflex (PLR), to indicate autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Heart rate variability (HRV) is the gold standard method for assessing ANS effects on the heart. The present study aimed to compare ANS activity as measured using dynamic pupillometry (DP) with short term HRV in healthy volunteers.

Professor, Department of Orthodontics, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai, India. Electronic address:

The proximity of the orofacial structures to the upper airway has led to enormous interest in their influence on the airway maintenance mechanism. The recognition of Sleep disorders and the evolution of dental sleep medicine has fueled further interest in the role of orthodontic treatment on the airway particularly in Class II malocclusions. With abundant literature on class II malocclusions and growth modification, it is natural that focus would shift on the effect of functional appliances on the airway.

Recent studies have suggested that chemokines and their receptors are involved in several neurodegenerative disorders. Also, numerous lines of evidence have indicated that inflammatory processes are involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). We have examined whether single nucleotide polymorphisms at the genes encoding chemokines RANTES (-28 C > G), RANTES (-403 A > G) MCP-1 (-2518 A > G), and chemokine receptors CCR2 (+190 G > A) and CCR5 (-Δ32) were associated with sporadic PD risk in the Indian population.

Background: Frequency range measures in singers reflect their physiological capacity, vocal flexibility, training effects, strengths, and limitations in singing. Since this information is vital for pedagogic and clinical purposes, this study aimed to measure the frequency range in Carnatic singers while singing different aspects of the vocal music.

Method: Practice task (gliding from lowest to highest note) and performance task (singing a song with vocal ornaments) were recorded from 55 trained Carnatic singers (40 females and 15 males).

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, with prostate cancer, the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among men. Prostate cancer develops in the peripheral zone of the prostate gland, and the initial progression largely depends on androgens, the male reproductive hormone that regulates the growth and development of the prostate gland and testis. The currently available treatments for androgen dependent prostate cancer are, however, effective for a limited period, where the patients show disease relapse, and develop androgen-independent prostate cancer (AIPC).

Background And Aim: The study assessed the impact of continuous patient education on Knowledge, Attitude, Practice (KAP), medication adherence and extent of glycemic control in pregnant women with gestational diabetes on insulin or metformin therapy.

Methods: 81 women with gestational diabetes (37 on insulin and 44 on metformin) were assessed for KAP using a validated questionnaire and medication adherence using the 8-items Morisky medication adherence scale, fasting, and postprandial blood glucose levels at the baseline and after two education sessions on drug therapy at one and three months intervals. The difference in mean KAP, medication adherence scores, fasting, and postprandial blood glucose levels and the extent of glycemic control with insulin or metformin therapy were assessed statistically.

August 2020

Associate Dean - PG studies & Professor, Department of Physiology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research(SRIHER), Porur, Chennai-600116. Electronic address:

Female infertility continues to increase in prevalence annually and factors causing it need to be researched. As IL-6-174 G/C polymorphism is known to alter the plasma levels of IL-6, abnormal levels of IL-6 found in infertile females could be due to genetic reasons. With the understanding of the importance of IL-6 in reproductive physiology, several individual studies done so far to find the association of this polymorphism with female infertility related disorders were systematically combined for meta-analysis.
