Article Synopsis
  • * The study used whole exome sequencing (WES) on a family from India to explore the genetic causes of ASDs in siblings displaying clinical features associated with Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS).
  • * Two inherited variants were found that contribute to the SMS features in the siblings, demonstrating how WES can shed light on the genetic complexity of syndromic ASDs and inform understanding of both syndromic and idiopathic types of ASD.

Background And Aims: The lack of a dedicated pain service catering to the postsurgical period has resulted in the origination of the pain-period gap. This has led to a resurgence of transitional pain service (TPS). Our objective was to evaluate the feasibility of TPS in pain practice among postsurgical cancer patients and its prevention of persistent postsurgical pain (PPSP), culminating in chronic pain catastrophising.

Oral cavity and larynx cancers are generally associated with tobacco consumption, alcohol abuse or both. Mouthwashes are liquid antiseptic solutions that decrease the microbial load in the oral cavity. Alcohol is often used in mouthwashes for its antiseptic functions and as a carrier for some active ingredients, including menthol or thymol, helping them penetrate the plaque.

Unlabelled: The primary objective of this study was to use artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the post operative hypocalcemia and severity of hypocalcemia following total thyroidectomy. The secondary objective was to determine the weightage for the factors predicting the hypocalcemia with the ANN. A single center, retrospective case series included treatment-naive patients undergoing total thyroidectomy for benign or malignant thyroid nodules from January 2020 to December 2022.

Lower Rates of Hypocalcemia Following Near-Infrared Autofluorescence Use in Thyroidectomy: A Meta-Analysis of RCTs.

Diagnostics (Basel)

February 2024

Coordinator of the International Head and Neck Scientific Group, 35100 Padua, Italy.

Background: Iatrogenic injury of the parathyroid glands is the most frequent complication after total thyroidectomy.

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of near-infrared autofluorescence (NIRAF) in reducing postoperative hypocalcemia following total thyroidectomy.

Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases were searched.

Article Synopsis
  • More people are getting thyroid cancer, so doctors need to better understand how risky certain thyroid nodules (Bethesda III nodules) are for becoming cancerous.
  • Different methods like special tests and scans are being studied to help figure out these risks more accurately.
  • Using both tests and scans together can help doctors make better choices for their patients, possibly avoiding unnecessary surgeries and personalizing treatment for each person.

Background And Aims: There is insufficient data regarding clinical characteristics, relapse rates, as well as lymph node metastasis of squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity (OSCC) developing from oral lichen planus (OLP-OSCC). The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate clinical characteristics, as well as relapse, recurrence and survival rates of OLP-OSCC.

Methods: In a retrospective monocenter analysis, all consecutive patients with an OSCC treated in the time period 1st January 2000-December 31 2016 were reviewed.

The heterogeneous characteristics of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) have resulted in varied perspectives on their causation. The biology behind the phenotypic heterogeneity in NDDs is not yet well-defined, but a strong genetic basis has become well accepted as causal for NDDs. Alongside this, there is growing focus on epigenetic mechanisms.

Background: Recommendations for adjuvant treatment for postoperative, early-stage endometrial cancer varies from observation through vaginal brachytherapy alone to pelvic radiation. While observation alone can lead to recurrence, external radiotherapy has increased morbidity. The aim of this study is to show our results with vaginal brachytherapy alone using a multichannel applicator for treatment of early-stage endometrial cancer.
