Periodontitis is a multifactorial inflammatory disease, pathogenic bacteria being the primary etiological agents. The host response and the severity of clinical manifestation are determined by genetic and environmental factors. There is some evidence that the individual response to environmental variations in the immune response in periodontitis is associated with genetic factors.

Background: Several components of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) reflect the course and predictability of periodontal disease and provide a pointer toward disease status. Potential biomarkers deoxypyridinoline (DPD), a metallophosphoesterase would correctly determine the presence of osteoclast-mediated bone turnover activity and seems to hold great promise as a predictive marker to determine bone destruction and active phases in the disease progression.
Aim: The aim of the current study is proposed to investigate the biologic plausibility for the levels of DPD as biomarker in chronic periodontitis patients.

Introduction: Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease. Among conglomerate etiological factors, overhanging interproximal restorations are viewed as contributing factors causing gingival inflammation due to their retentive capacity for bacterial plaque leading to periodontal destruction. Hence this study is intended to determine the prevalence of overhanging restorations and its effect on periodontal status of the teeth and to assess the iatrogenic effects of overhanging margins on periodontal health.
