Aim: This study aimed to (i) culturally adapt and linguistically translate the Evaluation of the Ability to Sing Easily (EASE) in Tamil (EASE-T), (ii) validate EASE-T in Tamil-speaking Carnatic singers, and (iii) compare the scores of EASE-T with the original EASE (English) and EASE-K (Kannada).

Method: The original EASE (English) consisting of twenty-two statements in the three subscales-vocal fatigue, pathological risk factors, and vocal concerns, was adapted and translated to Tamil by professional translators. After incorporating the modifications, EASE preliminary version was given to eight Carnatic singers and four speech language pathologists for content validation.

Aim: This study aimed (i) to extract videostrobokymograms (VSK) and measure the objective metrics of vocal fold vibration from stroboscopic footage with unsteady laryngeal positions using a customized approach that utilized the Lucas-Kanade optical flow method-alongside other preprocessing methods and kymogram extraction techniques and (ii) to juxtapose the readings of Electroglottography (EGG) with the extracted VSK metrics.

Method: Sixty-three tokens of videostroboscopy and EGG were obtained from 21 phononormals. The videostroboscopic samples were then subjected to pre-processing for optimization.

Mucolipidosis type IV (MLIV) is classified as an exceptionally autosomal recessive condition due to a change in MCOLN1 that encodes the mucolipin-1 protein. ML-1 is a membrane protein comprising 6 Trans regions, which are situated at the LELs, a serine lipase area, and a nuclear localization sign. The characteristic features of the ML4 patients are mental retardation and skeletal deformities due to an increase in lipid molecules in the brain, other tissues, and organs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify barriers and the readiness of school teachers to engage with voice therapy based on existing literature, focusing on methods, challenges in accessing therapy, and overall willingness to participate in interventions for vocal health.
  • Researchers followed a systematic process to review and analyze 29,698 articles, ultimately finding 26 relevant studies that highlighted barriers such as misconceptions about voice therapy, difficulties in seeking help, and challenges in maintaining therapy practices.
  • Most teachers demonstrated low readiness for participation in voice therapy, often in early stages of behavioral change, signaling a need for more targeted research addressing the unique circumstances teachers face.

Physical Activity, Functional Status, and Quality of Life Among Older Adults in India.

SAGE Open Nurs

October 2024

Department of Maternal and Child health, College of Nursing, Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

Article Synopsis
  • Physical activity and social engagement are essential for older adults to prevent functional decline and enhance their quality of life, yet a large percentage are physically inactive, with one in four adults globally not meeting activity guidelines.
  • The study evaluated the physical activity levels, functional status, and quality of life among 100 older patients (over 65) at a Chennai hospital, using several assessment tools to gather data.
  • Results revealed that only 17% of participants engaged in regular activity, with 81% not working on muscle strength or flexibility, and many reported disabilities, leading to challenges in daily tasks, although they had a moderate overall quality of life score.

Department of General Pathology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (DU), Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a common immune-mediated blistering disorder with predominant skin involvement and occasionally oral manifestations. Vesiculobullous lesions of the oral mucosa present with similar clinical features, and hence arriving at a clinical diagnosis is aided by a valuable chairside investigation, exfoliative cytology. Cytology done in the present case ruled out pemphigus because of the absence of Tzanck cells in the smear.
