Dengue virus (DENV) is a mosquito-borne arbovirus that causes febrile illness and can lead to a potentially lethal disease. The mechanism of disease pathogenesis is not completely understood, and there are currently no vaccines or therapeutic drugs available to protect against all four serotypes of DENV. Although many reasons have been suggested for the development of the disease, dengue studies have shown that, during DENV infection, there is an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants that disrupts homeostasis.

Background: The role of dengue virus in altering the functional properties of platelets remains poorly understood. Few studies have observed that changes in fatty acids are found to have an effect on platelet activation and aggregation. Also, platelet fatty acids have not been extensively studied in dengue so far.

Background And Aims: Safe medication is an important part of anesthesia practice. Even though anesthesia practice has become safer with various patient safety initiatives, it is not completely secure from errors which can sometimes lead to devastating complications. Multiple reports on medication errors have been published; yet, there exists a lacuna regarding the quantum of these events occurring in our country or the preventive measures taken.

Platelet concentrates (PCs; platelet-rich plasma and platelet-rich fibrin) are autologous bioactive substances that have found varied application in medical and dental fields, particularly in oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and sports medicine. The rationale of these technologies is to extract all the elements from patient's own blood sample, which could be used to improve healing by promoting tissue regeneration. PCs have evolved a long way since its introduction in 1954.

Background & Objectives: Rickettsial diseases are important re-emerging infections that mostly go unnoticed or are misdiagnosed. Though few case reports of Indian tick typhus have been reported in Indian literature in the past 10 yr, prevalence surveys are few and far between. The objective of this research was to study the seroprevalence of spotted fever (SF) group rickettsiosis and its coinfection with scrub typhus (ST) in Puducherry region of south India, as these two diseases may show similar clinical presentations.

Objective: Stellate ganglion (SG) block can provide pain relief in sympathetically mediated painful conditions. SG block at the sixth cervical (C6) vertebra level through lateral approach under the ultrasonogram (USG) guidance is very safe but may spare the fibres supplying the upper limb. When the drug is given at the C6 subfascially, it spreads along the cervical sympathetic chain, blocking the head/neck and upper limb.

Interplay between the apoptosis, DNA damage, and oxidative stress as a host response to dengue viral infections remains unclear. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from 60 dengue infected patients, 20 patients with febrile illness other than dengue (OFI) and 10 non-febrile illness (NFI) patients. DNA damage in the PBMCs was assessed using single cell gel electrophoresis and stages of apoptosis underwent by the PBMCs were studied by Annexin-PI staining using flow cytometry.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates potential molecular markers for predicting dengue disease progression using real-time PCR analysis.
  • The researchers aimed to find the most stable endogenous genes (COX, ACTB, GAPDH, HMBS, HPRT, B2M) for accurate transcript normalization in dengue cases.
  • Results showed that ACTB, HPRT, and GAPDH were the most stable genes, suggesting their use in conjunction for better qPCR normalization and IL-6 level quantification in dengue studies.
