Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically altered the medical landscape. Various strategies have been employed to preserve hospital beds, personal protective equipment, and other resources to accommodate the surges of COVID-19 positive patients, hospital overcapacities, and staffing shortages. This has had a dramatic effect on vascular surgical practice.

Introduction: Current evidence in the literature is inconclusive due to conflicting results with regards to an association between B/L (B/L) oophorectomy and Parkinson's disease (PD). We included large, powered studies to assess the association of PD in women who have undergone B/L oophorectomy.

Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search across three databases from inception to October 2022 for observational studies including pre-menopausal or post-menopausal women undergoing B/L oophorectomy.

Article Synopsis
  • Erythropoietin (EPO) is being studied as a potential treatment for newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), showing mixed results regarding its safety and effectiveness.
  • A meta-analysis of seven studies involving 903 infants found that EPO did not significantly decrease the risk of death, neurodisability, or cerebral palsy in these patients.
  • The findings suggest that EPO may not be an effective treatment for neonatal encephalopathy, highlighting the need for further large-scale randomized controlled trials to confirm these results.

Background: Postoperative inpatients experience increased stress due to pain and poor restorative sleep than non-surgical inpatients.

Objectives And Methods: A total of 101 patients, undergoing major oncologic surgery, were randomized to a postoperative sleep protocol (n = 50) or standard postoperative care (n = 51), between August 2020 and November 2021. The primary endpoint of the study was postoperative sleep time after major oncologic surgery.

Introduction: Non-gated, non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scans are commonly ordered for a variety of non-cardiac indications, but do not routinely comment on the presence of coronary artery calcium (CAC)/atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) which is known to correlate with increased cardiovascular risk. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms can help detect and quantify CAC/ASCVD which can lead to early treatment and improved outcomes.

Methods: Using an FDA-approved algorithm (NANOX AI) to measure coronary artery calcium (CAC) on non-gated, non-contrast CT chest, 536 serial scans were evaluated in this single-center retrospective study.

This practical review critically evaluates the evidence behind the widespread use of postoperative compression therapy intended to improve surgical outcomes, such as reduced edema, ecchymosis, pain, and seroma formation. A literature search of PubMed was conducted to identify relevant studies concerning the use of compression garments after aesthetic surgery, including rhinoplasty, facelift, neck lift, mammoplasty, abdominoplasty, limb contouring, and others. Additionally, reconstructive and therapeutic procedures closely related in anatomy or technique to these cosmetic operations, such as breast reconstruction, mastectomy, and hernia repair, were also considered to provide further perspective.

Background: Immediate alloplastic breast reconstruction was traditionally performed as an inpatient procedure. Despite several reports in the literature demonstrating comparable safety outcomes, there remains hesitancy to accept breast reconstruction performed as an outpatient procedure.

Methods: A retrospective review of National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data from 2014 to 2018 was utilized to evaluate recent trends and 30-day postoperative complication rates for inpatient versus outpatient immediate prosthetic-based breast reconstruction.

Background: Malignant cardiac neoplasms (MCNs), both primary and metastatic, are rare with few epidemiologic studies.

Methods: This retrospective study used the Healthcare Utilization Project/Nationwide Inpatient Sample database from 2002 to 2018 to evaluate the co-occurrences with other malignancies, and mortality of MCNs in the USA.

Results: The data contained 7207 weighted discharges of MCN.
