Article Synopsis
  • Long-read whole genome sequencing (lrWGS) shows promise for diagnosing autosomal recessive diseases that exome sequencing fails to identify, as tested on a cohort of 34 families.
  • In this study, likely causal variants were found in 13 families (38%), revealing novel candidate genes linked to conditions like neonatal lactic acidosis and neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • The results indicate that while lrWGS can uncover complex genetic factors, there are still important interpretation challenges that need to be addressed to fully leverage this technology for genetic diagnosis.

Introduction: The triple assessment, which combines a clinical examination, radiological imaging, and pathology, is used to assess the breast mass. The open excision of the suspicious lesion is the gold standard for breast biopsy techniques. However, because an excisional biopsy always results in a scar, many surgeons are considering less invasive, alternative methods due to the cost and morbidity of this operation.

The Arab League of Associations for Rheumatology (ArLAR) Research Group (ARCH) conducted this study to investigate the number of current practicing rheumatologists in the Arab countries, to estimate the projected number of rheumatologists in 10 years, and to evaluate the current workload, practice profile, consultation waiting time, and geographical mobilities of these rheumatologists. This cross-sectional survey study was conducted in 16 Arab countries in two parts. The first survey was addressed nominally to national societies to estimate the current and projected workforce.

COVID-19 vaccine safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding in women with autoimmune diseases: results from the COVAD study.

Rheumatology (Oxford)

May 2024

Division of Musculoskeletal and Dermatological Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, The University of Manchester, Manchester, UK.

Objectives: We investigated coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine safety in pregnant and breastfeeding women with autoimmune diseases (AID) in the COVID-19 Vaccination in Autoimmune Diseases (COVAD) study.

Methods: Delayed-onset (>7 days) vaccine-related adverse events (AE), disease flares and AID-related treatment modifications were analysed upon diagnosis of AID vs healthy controls (HC) and the pregnancy/breastfeeding status at the time of at least one dose of vaccine.

Results: Among the 9201 participants to the self-administered online survey, 6787 (73.

The left ventricle diverticulum is a very rare congenital cardiac malformation that is usually present during childhood. However, we are reporting the case of an adult patient with a left ventricular diverticulum who presented with chest pain. This paper also highlights the importance of using advanced imaging modalities such as cardiac magnetic resonance, which was essential for diagnosing our case.

Background: The use of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) membranes for guided bone and tissue regeneration in through-and-through defects after endodontic surgery was explored in three cases.

Case Summary: Herein, three patients presented to the endodontic clinic suffering from apical periodontitis, associated with large bone resorption and related to previously endodontically treated teeth. Periapical surgery was indicated in these cases and the osteotomy site was covered by A-PRF membrane.

Long-term safety of COVID vaccination in individuals with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies: results from the COVAD study.

Rheumatol Int

September 2023

Division of Musculoskeletal and Dermatological Sciences, Centre for Musculoskeletal Research, School of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, The University of Manchester, Manchester, UK.

Limited evidence on long-term COVID-19 vaccine safety in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) continues to contribute to vaccine hesitancy. We studied delayed-onset vaccine adverse events (AEs) in patients with IIMs, other systemic autoimmune and inflammatory disorders (SAIDs), and healthy controls (HCs), using data from the second COVID-19 Vaccination in Autoimmune Diseases (COVAD) study. A validated self-reporting e-survey was circulated by the COVAD study group (157 collaborators, 106 countries) from Feb-June 2022.

Objective: To investigate the application of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mp-MRI) for comprehensive evaluation of the correlation between the characteristics of the transitional zone and the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively recruited 210 patients with biopsy-proven BPH who underwent preoperative mp-MRI and were assigned an IPSS. The evaluation indicators included prostate volumetric parameters (total prostate volume [TPV], transition zone volume [TZV], and transition zone index [TZI, TZI=TZV/TPV]), prostate morphological parameters (intravesical prostatic protrusion, and presumed circle area ratio) and prostate compositional parameters (apparent diffusion coefficient [ADC], and mean signal intensity of T2WI [mean-SI-T2WI]).

Rheumatology (Oxford)

January 2024

Division of Musculoskeletal and Dermatological Sciences, Centre for Musculoskeletal Research, School of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, Manchester Academic Health Science Centre The University of Manchester, Manchester, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates flares in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) and other autoimmune rheumatic diseases (AIRDs) after COVID-19 vaccination, aiming to understand risk factors involved.
  • In a survey with over 15,000 respondents, about 9.6% to 19.6% of patients experienced flares post-vaccination, with those having active IIMs showing a greater risk, while treatments like rituximab and AZA reduced risk.
  • Key risk factors for flares included being female, having comorbid conditions like asthma, and experiencing higher pain levels, highlighting a difference between self-reported and clinically identified flares.

Objective: To assess the value of referral strategies for axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) in patients with suspicious chronic inflammatory low back pain (LBP), to estimate the value of inflammatory back pain (IBP) for referral, and to identify the predictive factors of the final diagnosis of axSpA in Middle Eastern Arab countries.

Methods: The study was multicentric, prospective, and conducted in LBP first-line clinics (rheumatology, internal, family medicine, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, and neurology). Consecutive adult patients aged under 45years were included in case of LBP suspicious of inflammatory nature according to the first-line physician.

Background: It remains unclear whether very preterm (VP) infants have the same level of brain structure and function as full-term (FT) infants. In addition, the relationship between potential differences in brain white matter microstructure and network connectivity and specific perinatal factors has not been well characterized.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the existence of potential differences in brain white matter microstructure and network connectivity between VP and FT infants at term-equivalent age (TEA) and examine the potential association of these differences with perinatal factors.
