Background Numerous risk factors have been identified for developing severe COVID-19, including sociodemographic variables and concomitant diseases. Individuals with underlying comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and coronary artery disease are at a greater risk of severe illness and death. This study aimed to observe the association between risk factors and the severity of COVID-19.

Purpose: Achieving precise postoperative alignment is critical for the long-term success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Long-leg standing radiograph (LLR) at 6 weeks post-op is the gold standard for assessing alignment, but its reliance on weight-bearing and positioning makes it less practical in the early postoperative period. Supine computed tomography scanogram (CTS) offers a potential alternative.

Aims: In the EMPACT-MI trial, empagliflozin reduced heart failure (HF) hospitalizations but not mortality in acute myocardial infarction (MI). Contemporary reports of clinical event rates with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in acute MI trials are sparse. The treatment effect of empagliflozin in those with and without T2DM in acute MI is unknown.

We report the case of a 3-year-old asymptomatic girl (12 kg, 96 cm) who was diagnosed with a large iatrogenic left ventricular pseudoaneurysm (LVP) on follow-up ultrasound, 14 months after apical muscular ventricular septal defect (VSD) closure with a 10 mm Amplatzer Muscular VSD occluder (Abbott, USA) due to device erosion. The LVP was successfully occluded using detachable Penumbra coils, with complete thrombo-exclusion confirmed at 12-month follow-up.

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is currently the gold standard of care for managing gallstone disease. The time taken to perform LC depends on both patient-related and surgeon-related factors. Recognizing factors associated with difficult LC (DLC) can aid in appropriate surgeon selection and judicious scheduling of cases.

Background: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a congenital heart defect that requires closure to prevent complications like heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. Catheter-based closure using devices such as the Amplatzer duct occluder is the preferred method due to its minimally invasive nature. However, device embolization is a rare but recognized complication, particularly in small children or high-flow PDAs.

Objective: Sheehan syndrome (SS), or postpartum pituitary necrosis, occurs due to reduced vascular supply to pituitary gland after postpartum hemorrhage, often linked to coagulation abnormalities, and pituitary antibodies. A smaller sella turcica volume is a risk factor for SS, consequent to compressive effects on the pituitary stalk. Hypopituitarism in SS increases the risk of metabolic liver and bone diseases.

Background And Aim: Chronic lower back pain (CLBP) is a major condition that leads to disability and reduced quality of life (QoL). This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a novel Boswellia serrata and Curcuma longa combination (CL20192) for the treatment of CLBP.

Material And Methods: Participants with CLBP were randomised to receive either a 300 mg CL20192 capsule (n = 45) or placebo capsule (n = 45) once daily for 90 days.

Objective: To evaluate the incidence of sentinel lymph node (SLN) metastasis observed in patients with presumed low- and intermediate-risk endometrial cancer (EC) and change in stage and adjuvant therapy resulting from SLN analysis. Secondary objectives include assessing the rates of detection of SLN using indocyanine green (ICG) dye and complication rates.

Methods: Between March 2017 and December 2023, 210 patients were included in the study.

Background: The clinicoradiological staging for esophageal cancer is fraught with variable accuracy, potentially depriving patients who have been understaged of the benefit of neoadjuvant therapy, which has been shown to improve long-term survival in locally advanced malignancies. It is imperative to identify these high-risk tumors for tailored treatment.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of a prospective database of patients undergoing esophagectomy for carcinoma esophagus between 2011 and 2019.

Mitochondria are the seat of cellular energy and play key roles in regulating several cellular processes such as oxidative phosphorylation, respiration, calcium homeostasis and apoptotic pathways. Mitochondrial dysfunction results in error in oxidative phosphorylation, redox imbalance, mitochondrial DNA mutations, and disturbances in mitochondrial dynamics, all of which can lead to several metabolic and degenerative diseases. A plethora of studies have provided evidence for the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND While very early discharge at 4 or fewer days after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is proven safe, cost-effective, and not novel, the term "rapid discharge" to indicate discharge at 2 or fewer days has been put forth more recently. However, there have been no such discharges documented in certain complex and challenging clinical scenarios, such as in patients with solitary kidney with deranged renal function, in emergency settings, or in very severe left ventricular dysfunction and dense adhesive pericarditis with diffuse plaque necessitating coronary artery endarterectomy. CASE REPORT I present 3 cases of off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) performed through conventional full sternotomy that were successfully discharged on the second postoperative day (at 42 h after surgery) in the following clinical settings: (1) patient with solitary kidney with borderline renal function; (2) patient undergoing emergency CABG; and (3) patient with adhesive pericarditis and severe left ventricular dysfunction requiring concomitant coronary endarterectomy with pericardiectomy.
