Parental experience with an ocular genetic counseling services in Saudi Arabia.

Purpose: This study reports parental attitudes towards preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and their satisfaction with genetic counseling services offered by a territory eye care hospital in Saudi Arabia.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 30 parents (either father or mother) of children affected by recessive genetic ocular disorders. Their basic knowledge of recessive genetic disorders, attitude toward PGD, and satisfaction with counseling services were assessed using structured telephonic interviews.

Human/robotic interaction: vision limits performance in simulated vitreoretinal surgery.

Purpose: Compare accuracy and precision in XYZ of stationary and dynamic tasks performed by surgeons with and without the use of a tele-operated robotic micromanipulator in a simulated vitreoretinal environment. The tasks were performed using a surgical microscope or while observing a video monitor.

Method: Two experienced and two novice surgeons performed tracking and static tasks at a fixed depth with hand-held instruments on a Preceyes Surgical System R0.

Stargardt's disease presenting with bilateral central ring scotoma.

Ring scotoma is an annular field defect centered on fixation. Age-related macular degeneration in the elderly and hydroxychloroquine toxicity in younger patients are usual causes of central ring scotoma. We report bilateral ring scotoma as the presentation of adult onset Stargardt's disease.

Long-term Outcomes of Baerveldt Glaucoma Implant Shunts as a Primary Versus Secondary Procedure.

Purpose: To determine the 5-year success rate for Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGI) in patients who received the implant as a primary (primary BGI, used as the initial surgical procedure) or secondary (secondary BGI, used after trabeculectomy) by a single surgeon between year 1994 and 2010.

Patients And Methods: A total of 117 eyes from patients who underwent BGI placement as a primary or secondary procedure were included in this study. Demographics, previous history, type of glaucoma, intraocular pressure (IOP), visual acuity (VA), glaucoma medication use, and early and late postoperative complications were collected.

Purposes: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the magnitude and determinants of bilateral blindness and visual impairment (VI) in the southwest region of São Paulo State, Brazil.

Methods: This cross-sectional study conducted during 2013 and 2014 targeted people of all ages in 10 districts in the southwest region of São Paulo State, Brazil. Ophthalmologists in a mobile unit measured visual acuity and examined eyes.

Sequelae from Epidemic Viral Conjunctivitis Can Be Associated with Inflammatory Trachoma in Schoolchildren?

Purpose: To evaluate the sequelae due to epidemic viral conjunctivitis (VC) for a possible association with inflammatory trachoma in schoolchildren.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed of 2,093 schoolchildren in public schools in Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The exams were conducted according to the WHO definitions to detect trachoma.

Vitiligo in association with vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic allergic inflammation of ocular surface involving the tarsal and/or bulbar conjunctiva. Signs of VKC are confined to the conjunctiva and cornea. The skin of the lid remains uninvolved.
