Involving in the immune response after cerebral infarction, astrocytes could secrete large amounts of pro- and anti-inflammatory factors. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Wnt3a intervention on the inflammatory response of oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) followed by reoxygenation (OGD/R) astrocyte model, and to provide a new target for immunoprotective treatment of cerebral infarction. We constructed the OGD/R rat astrocyte model, the astrocytes were treated by different concentrations of glucose (25, 50, 100 mM) intervened with/without Wnt3a (25 µg/ml).

Sleep problems among shift workers have emerged as a public health concern in recent years. However, few validation studies of self-reported sleep quality questionnaires were performed among shift workers. The present study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Brief Version of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (B-PSQI) in a shift workers sample.

Background: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients often become refractory to proton pump inhibitors (PPI)-a standard treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)-and intolerant to PPI in combination with domperidone. PPI with alginic acid is an alternative treatment option, but alginic acid is costly.

Objectives: We compared the costs and effectiveness of alginic acid plus PPI versus standard treatments (PPI with/without antacids as needed and lifestyle modifications) for GERD in SSc patients unsuitable for, or intolerant to, domperidone.

This study implemented a longitudinal self-control intervention experiment to examine whether limiting bedtime smartphone use can improve next-day working memory among individuals with problematic smartphone use (PSU). 156 Chinese undergraduates with PSU completed the 6-day experiment (3 nights for intervention condition and 2 nights for control condition). All participants were asked to complete N-back tests in the afternoon everyday during the experiment.

Human adipose tissue-derived stem cell (ADSC) derivatives are cell-free, with low immunogenicity and no potential tumourigenicity, making them ideal for aiding wound healing. However, variable quality has impeded their clinical application. Metformin (MET) is a 5' adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase activator associated with autophagic activation.

Acute Toxic Effects of Tetrodotoxin in Mice via Intramuscular Injection and Oral Gavage.

Toxins (Basel)

May 2023

Department of Marine Biomedicine and Polar Medicine, Naval Special Medical Center, Naval Medical University, Shanghai 200433, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a deadly marine biotoxin linked to increasing cases of intoxication and lacking specific treatments, highlighting the need for more research.
  • This study examined the acute toxic effects of TTX at sub-lethal doses in mice, finding that loss of muscle strength was dose-dependent and reversible, with differences in effects based on the method of administration (oral vs. intramuscular).
  • The research concludes that TTX's blocking of voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) is likely reversible, suggesting strategies that prevent complete VGSC blockage could help in managing TTX poisoning.

Thioredoxin (Trx) plays a critical role in maintaining redox balance in various cells and exhibits anti-oxidative, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, whether exogenous Trx can inhibit intracellular oxidative damage has not been investigated. In previous study, we have identified a novel Trx from the jellyfish , named CcTrx1, and confirmed its antioxidant activities in vitro.

Protective Effects of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) against the Jellyfish Envenoming.

Toxins (Basel)

April 2023

Department of Marine Biomedicine and Polar Medicine, Naval Special Medical Center, Naval Medical University, Shanghai 200433, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Jellyfish stings are a major global issue, with about 150 million cases each year leading to serious health problems like pain, inflammation, and even death.
  • - Research shows that the natural polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) can effectively counteract the harmful effects of jellyfish venom in laboratory studies and animal models.
  • - As a safe and commonly used food additive, EGCG is proposed as a promising treatment option for jellyfish envenoming due to its ability to mitigate the venom's toxicity.

Hypoxia is a typical feature of most solid tumors and has important effects on tumor cells' proliferation, invasion, and metastasis. This is the key factor that leads to poor efficacy of different kinds of therapy including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy, etc. In recent years, the construction of hypoxia-relieving functional nanoplatforms through nanotechnology has become a new strategy to reverse the current situation of tumor microenvironment hypoxia and improve the effectiveness of tumor treatment.

Understanding the Connection between Gut Homeostasis and Psychological Stress.

J Nutr

April 2023

Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Food Microbiology, School of Health Science and Engineering, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Long-term exposure to adverse life events that provoke acute or chronic psychological stress (hereinafter "stress") can negatively affect physical health and even increase susceptibility to psychological illnesses, such as anxiety and depression. As a part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) released from the hypothalamus is primarily responsible for the stress response. Typically, CRF disrupts the gastrointestinal system and leads to gut microbiota dysbiosis, thereby increasing risk of functional gastrointestinal diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome.

ASIC1a involves the acid-mediated activation of pancreatic stellate cells associated with autophagy induction.

Physiol Res

March 2023

Department of Nuclear Medicine, Changhai Hospital, Naval Medical University, Shanghai, China. Department of Marine Biomedicine and Polar Medicine, Naval Special Medical Center, Naval Medical University, Shanghai, China.

The acidic tumor microenvironment (TME) of pancreatic cancer affects the physiological function of pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs), which in turn promotes cancer progression. Acid-sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a) is responsible for acidosis-related physiopathological processes. In this study, we investigated the effect of acid exposure on the activation and autophagy of PSCs, and the role of ASIC1a in these events.
