Impact of remote collaboration-based family physical activity on activity levels and quality of life in children with intellectual developmental disabilities.

Front Public Health

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Physical Fitness and Exercise Rehabilitation of Hunan Province, College of Physical Education, Hunan Normal University, Changsha, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Low physical activity levels are common in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), and family-based activities combined with school programs can improve their activity and health.
  • - A study with 36 children aimed to see if adding family support to physical education would boost physical activity (PA) and quality of life (QoL). After 6 months, those with the family support showed significantly more moderate to vigorous PA and less sedentary behavior compared to the control group.
  • - The results indicated that family involvement not only increased active behaviors and improved QoL in the short term but also helped sustain these healthy habits over time.

Background/objectives: The potential and limitations of chatbots in medical education and clinical decision support, particularly in specialized fields like psychiatry, remain unknown. By using the Rasch model, our study aimed to evaluate the performance of various state-of-the-art chatbots on psychiatry licensing exam questions to explore their strengths and weaknesses.

Methods: We assessed the performance of 22 leading chatbots, selected based on LMArena benchmark rankings, using 100 multiple-choice questions from the 2024 Taiwan psychiatry licensing examination, a nationally standardized test required for psychiatric licensure in Taiwan.

Children with mild intellectual disabilities often exhibit poor social skills owing to intellectual impairments. This makes it essential to enhance their communication abilities. This study provides a novel contribution by systematically investigating the effects of false beliefs and empathy on white lie behavior among children with mild intellectual disabilities, considering both state and trait dimensions.

The Charactertistics and neural mechanisms of trait and state empathy in deaf individuals.

Neuroscience

January 2025

Institute of Psychology and Behavior, Henan University, Kaifeng 475004, China; School of Psychology, Henan University, Kaifeng 475004, China. Electronic address:

Empathy deficiencies are prevalent among deaf individuals. It has yet to be determined whether they exhibit deficiencies in both trait empathy and state empathy, along with the effect of top-down attention. Here, the current study employed the IRI-C scale and physiological pain empathy tasks (A-P task and A-N task) to explore the temporal dynamics of neural activities when deaf individuals were processing second-hand painful/non-painful stimuli.

An Adapted Physical Activity Program for Adolescents with an Intellectual Disability: An International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health Perspective.

Life (Basel)

October 2024

Key Laboratory of Physical Fitness and Exercise Rehabilitation of Hunan Province, College of Physical Education, Hunan Normal University, Changsha 410012, China.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study investigated the effects of a 6-month ICF-based Adaptive Physical Activity (APA) intervention on adolescents with IDs, comparing an intervention group (IG) receiving this tailored program to a control group (CG) engaging in regular physical education.
  • * Results showed that the IG made significant improvements in motor skills, physical fitness, and quality of life, suggesting that customized physical activity programs can enhance overall well-being for adolescents with IDs and highlighting the interconnectedness of these factors.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the link between metabolic differences and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by analyzing large genomic datasets to identify potential diagnostic markers.
  • Using advanced statistical methods like Mendelian randomization, researchers found that higher levels of a specific sphingomyelin metabolite are associated with an increased risk of ASD.
  • The findings were supported through independent validation in a separate autism cohort, suggesting that plasma metabolites could play a significant role in understanding ASD's diagnosis and underlying causes.

Article Synopsis
  • The Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-Third Edition (GARS-3) has been adapted to create the Chinese version (CV-GARS-3) aimed at improving autism spectrum disorder (ASD) screening in China due to a lack of adaptive research.
  • The study involved 362 individuals with ASD, 126 with typical development, and 103 with other disorders to assess the psychometric properties of CV-GARS-3, revealing overall strong reliability and validity across its subscales.
  • Results indicated that CV-GARS-3 is a promising tool for ASD screening, with high sensitivity and specificity; however, improvements are needed for better cultural adaptation in the Chinese context.

J Intellect Disabil Res

December 2024

College of Sports and Health, Shandong Sport University, Jinan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • A study focused on the sleep issues of school-aged children with Down syndrome (DS) in northern China, revealing limited prior research on the topic.
  • Parents of 334 children reported an average sleep duration of 9.7 hours, with 62% sleeping less than 10 hours a night, and a 69.8% prevalence rate of sleep problems.
  • The most common issues identified were sleep-disordered breathing, short sleep duration, and resistance to bedtime, particularly prominent in younger children with DS, highlighting the need for increased awareness and tailored interventions.

Perspectives of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities on Quality of Life: A Qualitative Study.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

September 2024

Department of Early Childhood Education, School of Education, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, 10676 Athens, Greece.

Experiences of occupational participation of adults with Intellectual Disabilities (IDs) were explored through the lens of the Model of Occupational Justice (MOJ) and Critical Theory in order to shape and develop an occupation-centered model of quality of life (QoL). This qualitative study involved thirteen adults with IDs ( = 13). A semi-structured interview, constructed based on MOJ and Critical Theory principles, was administered to explore perspectives on QoL, as well as injustices regarding occupational participation.

Background: Personal narratives play an essential role in children's social and academic development. However, children with Down syndrome have ongoing challenges with constructing and communicating personal narratives.

Methods: Using a single-case multiple-probe across participants design, we examined whether a targeted intervention could improve both micro- and macro-structural aspects of personal narratives from Chinese adolescents with Down syndrome.

Parents of atypically developing children such as parents of children with ASD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and intellectual disability experience higher levels of parenting stress than parents of typically developing children. However, whether they possess enhanced emotional negativity bias was unclear. In the present study, 28 parents of typically developing children and 29 parents of atypically developing children were recruited.

Background: Studies have shown that deaf individuals distribute more attention to the peripheral visual field and exhibit enhanced visual processing for peripheral stimuli relative to hearing individuals. This leads to better detection of peripheral target motion and simple static stimuli in hearing individuals. However, when threatening faces that represent dangerous signals appear as non-targets in the periphery, it remains unclear whether deaf individuals would retain an advantage over hearing individuals in detecting them.

Restricted and repetitive behavior (RRB) is one of the two core diagnostic features used to determine the severity of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The Repetitive Behavior Scale‑Revised (RBS-R) is widely used to measure the presence and severity of a variety of RRBs in individuals with ASD. Previous studies have implemented a factor analysis framework to examine the RBS-R, while there're still inconsistencies in the use of the measure.

Many studies have tested perceptual symbols in conceptual processing and found that perceptual symbols contain experiences from multisensory channels. However, whether the disability of one sensory channel affects the processing of the perceptual symbols and then affects conceptual processing is still unknown. This line of research would extend the perceptual symbol theory and have implications for language rehabilitation and mental health for people with disabilities.
