This sub-analysis of the ePREDICE trial, investigated the prevalence and determinants of renal complications, specifically glomerular hyperfiltration, albuminuria, and reduced kidney function, in individuals with prediabetes (PD). The cohort consisted of 967 participants from diverse backgrounds across seven countries. The kidney function was evaluated using the MDRD-4 equation, and the influence of various clinical and demographic factors on renal involvement was assessed by multivariable regression models.

Massive intravascular hemolysis occurs not unfrequently in many clinical conditions. Breakdown of erythrocytes promotes the accumulation of heme-derivates in the kidney, increasing oxidative stress and cell death, thus promoting acute kidney injury (AKI). NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4) is a major source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the kidney, however it is unknown the role of Nox4 in hemolysis and whether inhibition of this enzyme may protect from heme-mediated injury.

Background: Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) are toxic trace elements that represent a public health problem as risk factors for cardiovascular disease and hypertension (HT) and could also contribute to the development of resistant hypertension (rHT) AIMS: To compare the blood concentrations of Pb, Cd and Hg in subjects with resistant and non-resistant HT and to define whether there is a relationship between its levels and rHT.
Methods: Cross-sectional study. Subjects aged ≥ 21 to ≤ 80 years with a body mass index < 40 kg/m2 were recruited on a discretionary basis from October 2001 to October 2004 in a hypertension unit of a tertiary hospital amongst those sent to the hypertension unit by their family physician.

Despite the abundance of registered clinical trials worldwide, the availability of effective drugs for obesity treatment is limited due to their associated side effects. Thus, there is growing interest in therapies that stimulate energy expenditure in white adipose tissue. Recently, we demonstrated that the delivery of a miR-21 mimic using JetPEI effectively inhibits weight gain in an obese mouse model by promoting metabolism, browning, and thermogenesis, suggesting the potential of miR-21 mimic as a treatment for obesity.

Intravascular hemolysis is a common feature of different clinical entities, including sickle cell disease and malaria. Chronic hemolytic disorders are associated with hepatic damage; however, it is unknown whether heme disturbs lipid metabolism and promotes liver steatosis, thereby favoring the progression to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Using an experimental model of acute intravascular hemolysis, we report here the presence of liver injury in association with microvesicular lipid droplet deposition.

During pregnancy, maternal polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are transferred to the fetus through the placenta by specific FA transporters (FATP). A higher perinatal exposure to n-6 over n-3 PUFA could be linked to excess fat mass and obesity development later in life. In this context, we aimed to assess the associations between long chain PUFAs (LC-PUFAs) (n-6, n-3, and n-6/n-3 ratios) measured in the placenta at term birth with obesity-related parameters in the offspring at 6 years of age and assess whether these associations are dependent on the placental relative expression of fatty acid transporters.
