Aims: European Systematic Coronary Risk Assessment 2 for Older Persons (SCORE2-OP) model has shown modest performance when externally validated in selected cohorts. We aim to investigate its predictive performance and clinical utility for 10-years cardiovascular (CV) risk in an unbiased and representative cohort of older people of a low CV risk country. Furthermore, we explore whether other clinical or echocardiographic features could improve its performance.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFEnvironmental DNA (eDNA) detection employing quantitative PCR (qPCR) and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) offers a non-invasive and efficient approach for monitoring aquatic organisms. Accurate and sensitive quantification of eDNA is crucial for tracking rare and invasive species and understanding the biodiversity abundance and distribution of aquatic organisms. This study compares the sensitivity and quantification precision of qPCR and ddPCR for eDNA surveys through Bayesian inference using latent parameters from both known concentration (standards) and environmental samples across three teleost fish species assays.

Asymptomatic IgM gammopathy encompasses IgM monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and asymptomatic Waldenström macroglobulinemia (AWM), both having a risk of progression to symptomatic disease. Here, we assessed the risk of progression and the mortality of 956 patients with asymptomatic IgM gammopathy across 25 Spanish centers. After a median follow-up of 5.

Unlabelled: Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is a rare disease characterized by the presence of two pathogenic variants in the LDLR, APOB, PCSK9 or LDLRAP1 genes, which cause very high levels of LDL cholesterol and premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).The objective of this study is to analyze the current situation regarding diagnosis, cardiovascular disease, lipid-lowering treatment and degree of control of lipids in patients with HoFH in the National Dyslipidemia Registry of the Spanish Atherosclerosis Society.
Methods: Subjects with HoFH, confirmed by the presence of two pathogenic variants in the genes mentioned above, included in the registry from 2013 to June 2023 with an updated review were analyzed.
Background: Lung ultrasound (LUS) has emerged as a useful tool in the acute phase of patients admitted for ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction. However, its long-term significance remains uncertain, and risk scores do not include LUS findings as a predictor. This study aims to assess the 1-year prognostic value of LUS and its ability to enhance existing risk scores.

Introduction: Germline predisposition to myeloid neoplasms can be suspected in patients younger than 50 years or when harboring mutations with a variant allele frequency (VAF) higher than 30% for point mutations in specific genes. To investigate the VAF thresholds' accuracy we have explored the prevalence of germline variants below the 30% VAF threshold.
Methods: A total of 40 variants with VAF lower than 30% in bone marrow samples of myeloid neoplasm patients were selected and studied in CD3 cells.

The genetic landscape underlying the transformation of splenic diffuse red pulp small B-cell lymphoma (SDRPL) is not well understood. The present study aimed to unravel the genomic alterations involved in the progression and transformation of SDRPL. We performed genetic studies on both SDRPL and subsequent or synchronous diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) samples in three SDRPL patients who eventually developed DLBCL.

Disease associated pathological aggregates of alpha-synuclein (αSynD) exhibit prion-like spreading in synucleinopathies such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Seed amplification assays (SAAs) such as real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) have shown high diagnostic sensitivity and specificity for detecting proteopathic αSynD seeds in a variety of biospecimens from PD and DLB patients. However, the extent to which relative proteopathic seed concentrations are useful as indices of a patient's disease stage or prognosis remains unresolved.

Background: Young (<18 years of age) patients with Brugada syndrome (BrS) are often under-represented in BrS studies and their management, especially related to syncopal episodes, remains unclear.
Objectives: This study sought to describe the arrhythmia prevalence among young patients with BrS undergoing continuous rhythm monitoring by implantable loop recorder (ILR) and to assess the etiology behind syncope of undetermined origin.
Methods: A total of 147 patients with BrS with ILR were enrolled in 12 international centers and divided into pediatric (age <12 years; n = 77, 52%) and adolescents (age 13-18 years; n = 70, 48%).

Background: Short and rare episodes of atrial fibrillation (AF) are commonly detected using implanted devices (device-detected AF) in patients with prior stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). The effectiveness and safety of oral anticoagulation in patients with prior stroke or TIA and device-detected AF but with no ECG-documented AF is unclear.
Methods And Results: This prespecified analysis of the NOAH-AFNET 6 (Non-Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants in Patients With Atrial High Rate Episodes) trial with post hoc elements assessed the effect of oral anticoagulation in patients with device-detected AF with and without a prior stroke or TIA in the randomized, double-blind, double-dummy NOAH-AFNET 6 trial.

Exploiting crystallographic data repositories for large-scale quantum chemical computations requires the rapid and accurate extraction of the molecular structure, charge and spin from the crystallographic information file. Here, we develop a general approach to assign the ground state spin of transition metal complexes, in complement to our previous efforts on determining metal oxidation states and bond order within the software. Starting from a database of 31k transition metal complexes extracted from the Cambridge Structural Database with , we construct the TM-GSspin dataset, which contains 2063 mononuclear first row transition metal complexes and their computed ground state spins.

Desmoplastic fibroma of bone is a very uncommon, benign but locally aggressive fibrogenic tumor. This report describes the case of a 45-year-old patient with a massive desmoplastic fibroma of the proximal tibia. A two-staged surgical procedure was successfully performed: wide resection and endoprosthetic reconstruction.

Background And Aims: Familial inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) history is a controversial prognostic factor in IBD. We aimed to evaluate the impact of a familial history of IBD on the use of medical and surgical treatments in the biological era.
Methods: Patients included in the prospectively maintained ENEIDA database and diagnosed with IBD after 2005 were included.

Ditopic bis-pyrazolylpyridine ligands usually react with divalent metal ions (M) to produce dinuclear triple-stranded helicates [ML] or, π⋯π interactions, dimers of monoatomic complexes ([ML]). The introduction of an additional benzene ring at each end of ligand L increases the number of aromatic contacts within the supramolecular aggregate by 40%, driving the self-recognition process in an irreversible manner. Consequently, the mixing of new bis-pyrazolylquinoline L2 with FeX salts leads to crystallization of the tripartite high-spin assemblies (X@[Fe(L2)]) (X = Cl, Br or I).

Objective: Data on drownings tend to underestimate mortality from this cause. The objective of this study was to describe fatal drownings recorded in Catalonia between 2019 and 2022 through forensic sources, present their characteristics, and assess the utility of this information for monitoring drowning mortality.
Methods: A retrospective observational study based on the register of judicial deaths from the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Catalonia was carried out.

Purpose: to provide a comprehensive overview of all the surgical techniques published in the literature for repairing meniscal ramp lesions focusing on the technical aspects and the pros and cons of every procedure. Such lesions can be managed using various approaches, each of this with its specific advantages and disadvantages.
Methods: Pubmed Central, Scopus, and EMBASE databases were systematically reviewed according to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines for studies on surgical techniques for repairing meniscal ramp lesions through May 2023.
