Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae causes invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in adults. The introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) has reduced vaccine serotypes but has also led to the rise of non-vaccine serotypes. The aim of this study was to analyse pneumococcal lineages and their association with recent changes in IPD among adults in Spain.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) may persist for long periods due to biofilm formation. The objective of this study was to describe biofilm formation in association with the presence of S. aureus surface protein G (sasG) and its allelic variants in MRSA bacteraemia isolates from endemic (CC5, CC8, CC22) and sporadic clones in Spain (2008-2015).

Objectives: To compare the determinants of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole resistance with established susceptibility values for fastidious Haemophilus spp., to provide recommendations for optimal trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole measurement.
Methods: We collected 50 strains each of Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae at Bellvitge University Hospital.

Objective: An early reduction of adult invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) was observed after the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) introduction for children in Spain. We analysed the epidemiology of adult IPD in the late-PCV13 period.
Methods: This was a prospective multicentre study of adult IPD involving six hospitals.

A lincosamide-resistant and macrolide-susceptible phenotype has not been described to date in Streptococcus pyogenes [group A streptococcus (GAS)]. The aim of this study was to characterize a GAS isolate susceptible to macrolides but resistant to lincosamide, streptogramin A and pleuromutilin antibiotics. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested using the microdilution broth method and the resistance phenotype was tested by D-test.

Background: We studied the impact of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) on the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and serotype distribution in a region with intermediate levels of vaccination (around 64% in children aged <2 years).
Methods: Surveillance data on IPD cases reported by microbiologists participating in the Microbiological Reporting System of Catalonia during 2006-2014 were analysed. We compared estimated incidence rate (IR) ratios for serotypes included in PCV7, PCV10non7, PCV13non10 and non-PCV13 between the PCV7 (2006-2009) and PCV13 periods (2010-2014).

Serotypes/genotypes causing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in adults are determined by vaccination strategies. The aim of this study was to assess the epidemiology of IPD in adults (≥18 years) after PCV13 introduction for children: serotypes, clonal complexes, antibiotic non-susceptibility and clinical presentations. We performed a prospective, clinical surveillance of hospitalized culture-confirmed IPDs in adults in nine Spanish hospitals (August 2010-June 2015).

Background: Bacteremia with Clostridium septicum (CS) and Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus (SGG) have both been associated with colorectal neoplasms (CRN) and colonoscopic examination is advised, however the differences and similarities in colorectal findings are not well known.
Methods: This is a multicenter, comparative study of patients with CS bacteremia [44 of 664 cases (6.

Objective: To determine changes in mortality among adults with invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) after introducing pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) in children.
Methods: An active surveillance of adults with culture-proven IPD in Barcelona. Serotype-specific mortality and rates of disease and death were analysed in three periods: baseline (1994-2001), PCV7 (2002-2009) and PCV13 (2010-2013).

Virulent hypermucoviscous Klebsiella pneumoniae strains associated with the magA and rmpA genes have mainly emerged in Asia. We analysed the frequency and the clinical and molecular epidemiology of K. pneumoniae bacteraemia isolates obtained over a 7-year period (2007-2013).

Objectives: To determine the incidence of Streptococcus bovis (Sb) biotypes causing bacteraemia and associated malignancies.
Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of patients with Sb bacteraemia, pulled out from a prospective surveillance protocol of bacteraemia cases, in three areas of Spain (1990-2013): a cattle area (Lugo), a fishing area (Ferrol) and an urban area (Barcelona). Colonoscopy and Sb biotypes (Sb-I and Sb-II) were determined in most cases.
