Background: Literature comparing different alternatives for pain control in the immediate postoperative period of pediatric acute appendicitis (PAA) is scarce.

Materials And Methods: We prospectively compared the analgesic and emetogenic profile of intravenous ibuprofen and metamizole in the immediate postoperative period of PAA. For this purpose, we used a sample of patients operated on in 2021 in our center.

These alterations can be missed on routine congenital hypothyroidism (CH) screening which only measures thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Serum leptin concentration is associated with the attainment of clinical outcomes in patients with axial spondyloarthritis treated with TNF inhibitors.

Objectives: To analyse the influence of adipokines on attaining the clinical outcomes in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) treated with TNF inhibitors (TNFi), and then, to investigate the association of patients' characteristics and adipokine concentrations.

Methods: This was a longitudinal study including 110 patients with axSpA who were initiated at TNFi and were followed-up for 6 months (m). Disease activity was assessed by Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score (ASDAS) at baseline and at 6 m of treatment.

There is growing evidence that liver transplantation (LT) is the most effective treatment for acute-on-chronic liver failure grade-3 (ACLF-3). This study examines whether and how this evidence translates into practice by analyzing the variability in intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, listing strategies, and LT activity for patients with ACLF-3 across transplantation centers in Europe. Consecutive patients who were admitted to the ICU with ACLF-3, whether or not they were listed and/or transplanted with ACLF-3, between 2018 and 2019 were included across 20 transplantation centers.

Adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes in Latin America and the Caribbean: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objective: To estimate the point prevalence and likely ranges of pregnancy-induced hypertension, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, low birth weight and preterm delivery in Latin America and the Caribbean, and evaluate the heterogeneity of the estimates.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies reporting the prevalence of maternal and perinatal adverse outcomes in populations in Latin American and the Caribbean published between 2000 and 2019 in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. We searched PubMed, Embase, and LILACS.

Continuous Incisional Lidocaine in Pediatric Patients following Open Heart Surgery.

Continuous incisional lidocaine infusion has been proposed as an adjunctive therapy in the management of postoperative pain in adult patients. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy and safety of a continuous subcutaneous lidocaine infusion in pediatric patients following open heart surgery. All patients receiving a subcutaneous lidocaine infusion in median sternotomy incisions after open heart surgery during 2 consecutive years were included in the study.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Assessment of Radial Scars/complex Sclerosing Lesions of the Breast.

Purpose: To describe the magnetic resonance characteristics of radial scars/complex sclerosing lesions (RS/CSL) of the breast using the current BI-RADS lexicon. To investigate the value of diffusion weighted imaging to predict malignancy.

Patients And Methods: From 2010 to 2017, we have found 25 women with architectural distortion at mammography who underwent surgical resection with a final hystopathologic report of RS/CSL.

Secondary surgical cytoreduction needs to be assessed taking into account surgical technique, completeness of cytoreduction, and extent of disease.

Recent evidence suggested that secondary surgical cytoreduction followed by chemotherapy does not result in longer overall survival in patients with platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer.This statement is based on a phase III multicenter, randomized clinical trial that lacks a description of the surgical protocol, the surgical technique, and the surgical variables. In a study that evaluates surgical cytoreduction, it is mandatory to assess the grade of cytoreductive surgery achieved (Sugarbaker PH, Langenbeck's Arch Surg 384:576-87, 1999), the extent of disease using PCI (Peritoneal Cancer Index), the technique itself, and the existence of a multidisciplinary approach with extensive upper abdominal procedures in experienced centers (Ren et al, BMC Cancer 15:1-12, 2015).

FGF23-Klotho axis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Objectives: We aimed to compare serum Klotho and fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) levels between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and healthy controls. Possible association between FGF-23 and soluble Klotho with different characteristic of the disease as well as their potential role as surrogate markers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) were studied.

Methods: Sixty-three patients with RA recruited at Vega-Baja Hospital, Orihuela (Spain) from November 2016 to May 2018 and sixty-five age- and sex-matched healthy controls were included in this study.

The objective of this study has been to analyze the medical practice of workers' health examinations in Catalonia (Spain) in terms of its occupational preventive aim.

Material And Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out by means of an online survey addressed to occupational physicians who were members of the Catalan Society of Safety and Occupational Medicine.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a potentially lethal condition for which no therapy is available beyond replacement of renal function. Post-translational histone modifications modulate gene expression and kidney injury. Histone crotonylation is a recently described post-translational modification.

The assessment of plasma volume loss (∆PV) induced by exercise can be estimated from changes in hematocrit (Htc) and hemoglobin (Hb), and it is essential when investigating the metabolic or biologic response to exercise of circulating biomarkers. We aimed to ascertain whether the estimation of ∆PV may differ when Hb and Htc are determined by automated hematological analyzer (AHA) versus manual methods. Twenty-five healthy male subjects performed a maximal running incremental exercise.

Like drug addiction, pathological gambling (PG) has been associated with impairments in executive functions and alterations in dopaminergic functioning; however, the role of dopamine (DA) in the executive profile of PG remains unclear. The aim of this study was to identify whether the DRD2/ANKK1 Taq1A-rs1800497 and the DAT1-40 bp VNTR polymorphisms are associated with cognitive flexibility (measured by Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and Trail Making Test (TMT)) and inhibition response (measured by Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT)), in a clinical sample of 69 PG patients. Our results showed an association between DA functioning and cognitive flexibility performance.

Use of mobile phones as a tool for weight loss: a systematic review.

We conducted a systematic review of the literature on the use of mobile phones for weight loss. A total of 43 studies were identified on obese or overweight adults, aged 18 years or over. After review, ten articles met the inclusion criteria.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4C (CMT4C) is a hereditary neuropathy with prominent unsteadiness. The objective of the current study is to determine whether the imbalance in CMT4C is caused only by reduced proprioceptive input or if vestibular nerve involvement is an additional factor. We selected 10 CMT4C patients and 10 age-matched and sex-matched controls.

Anidulafungin dosing in critically ill patients with continuous venovenous haemodiafiltration.

Background: Anidulafungin is indicated as a first-line treatment for invasive candidiasis in critically ill patients. In the intensive care unit, sepsis is the main cause of acute renal failure, and treatment with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) has increased in recent years. Antimicrobial pharmacokinetics is affected by CRRT, but few studies have addressed the optimal dosage for anidulafungin during CRRT.

Presence of human enteric viruses in the stools of healthy Malawian 6-month-old infants.

The acquisition of intestinal microbiota is essential for infants who are also in close contact with intestinal viruses. We assayed the presence of human enteric viruses in the faeces of 44 healthy breast-fed 6-month-old infants from rural Malawi. Half of the infants tested harboured enteroviruses, although the infants had no gastric symptoms, suggesting a viral community mainly composed of human asymptomatic enteroviruses.
