New COVID-19 vaccination recommendations in Spain: Optimizing for next seasons.

Enferm Infecc Microbiol Clin

January 2025

Centro Nacional de Gripe de Valladolid (GISRS/WHO), Spain.

Despite high initial vaccination rates, Spain's current COVID-19 vaccination coverage in recommended groups does not meet WHO targets. For the upcoming season, challenges include revising vaccination age, updating risk groups, and unifying criteria with flu vaccine co-administration. European Commission's advance purchase agreements limit access to certain vaccines, and the need for vaccines effective against current variants adds administrative complexities.

This paper presents a synthetic dataset of labeled game situations in recordings of federated handball and basketball matches played in Galicia, Spain. The dataset consists of synthetic data generated from real video frames, including 308,805 labeled handball frames and 56,578 labeled basketball frames extracted from 2105 handball and 383 basketball 5-s video clips. Experts manually labeled the video clips based on the respective sports, while the individual frames were automatically labeled using computer vision and machine learning techniques.

The dataset offers a comprehensive information to analyse cities and neighbourhood that are potentially unsafe for women, this information has been collected for four cities: Toluca (Mexico), Valencia (Spain), Dublin (Ireland) and San Francisco (USA). The collection includes quantitative and qualitative variables obtained and processed from open data, georeferenced publications from a social media platform, and points located through participatory mapping sessions. The data is structured in raw format, organized by country and city, and categorized according to the data source used while processing, which allows unrestricted access with most data analysis software and it does not depend on specific licenses.

The unique structural properties of zeolites make them ideal environments for encapsulating subnanometric metal clusters on their microporous channels and cavities, showing an enhanced catalytic performance. As a first step towards the functionalization of these clusters as photocatalysts as well, this work addresses the optical properties of zeolite-encapsulated Cu-TiO nanoparticles as well as their application in the photo-induced activation of CO by sunlight. Model density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate the stability of the Cu cluster adsorbed on the TiO nanoparticles filling the pores of a model zeolite structure.

Background: Chronic kidney disease is a global problem characterized by a progressive decrease in kidney function with associated symptoms. A better understanding of these symptoms could lead to the development of personalized strategies.

Objective: This systematic review aims to describe the clusters of symptoms in kidney failure and categorize them according to their time of onset and how disabling they are for patients.

Background: Sustainable modular dwelling design for rural areas should focus on creating healthy and economically accessible spaces, sensitive to local needs and integrating environmental, functional, sociological and technological aspects. Flexibility is essential to reduce the initial investment and allow future transformations, optimizing the recovery and reuse of materials. These houses must be adaptable, safe and have basic services, satisfying the needs and stages of families' development.

Slaughterhouse environments are prone to microbial contamination, influenced by factors like set-up, size and area as well as disinfection practices. Thus, effective control measures are crucial to prevent the spread of pathogens and their contaminant genes (antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence factors) throughout the food chain. In the present study, we assessed the microbial contamination in environmental surfaces of three slaughterhouses located in the Jaén province (Spain).

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association of baseline coagulation proteins with hospitalization variables in COVID-19 patients admitted to ICU, as well as coagulation system changes after one-year post-discharge, taking into account gender-specific bias in the coagulation profile.

Methods: We conducted a prospective longitudinal study on 49 ICU-admitted COVID-19 patients. Proteins were measured using a Luminex 200™.

Sesame protein isolate (SPI) is a highly nutritious plant protein distinguished by its essential amino acid profile. This study investigates the influence of pH on SPI's physicochemical, structural, and techno-functional properties, highlighting its potential as a sustainable protein source for various food applications. Our findings revealed that SPI had a protein content of 90.

Disease is a key driver of community and ecosystem structure, especially when it strikes foundation species. In the widespread marine foundation species eelgrass (Zostera marina), outbreaks of wasting disease have caused large-scale meadow collapse in the past, and the causative pathogen, Labyrinthula zosterae, is commonly found in meadows globally. Research to date has mainly focused on abiotic environmental drivers of seagrass wasting disease, but there is strong evidence from other systems that biotic interactions such as herbivory can facilitate plant diseases.

Background: Chronic pain is among the most common conditions worldwide and requires a multidisciplinary treatment approach. Spinal cord stimulation is a possible treatment option for pain management; however, patients undergoing this intervention require close follow-up, which is not always feasible. eHealth apps offer opportunities for improved patient follow-up, although adherence to these apps tends to decrease over time, with rates dropping to approximately 60%.

Hemodynamic measurements such as cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) can provide useful information for the diagnosis and characterization of brain tumors. Previous work showed that arterial spin labeling (ASL) in combination with vasoactive stimulation enabled simultaneous non-invasive evaluation of both parameters, however this approach had not been previously tested in tumors. The aim of this work was to investigate the application of this technique, using a pseudo-continuous ASL (PCASL) sequence combined with breath-holding at 3 T, to measure CBF and CVR in high-grade gliomas and metastatic lesions, and to explore differences across tumoral-peritumoral regions and tumor types.

Background: Generalised pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a chronic, systemic, neutrophilic inflammatory disease. A previous Delphi panel established areas of consensus on GPP, although patient perspectives were not included, and aspects of treatment goals remain unclear.

Objectives: To identify and achieve consensus on refined, specific treatment goals for GPP treatment via a Delphi panel with patient participation.

Plants commonly undergo leaf morphoanatomy and composition modifications to cope with drought stress, and these tend to reduce mesophyll conductance to CO2 diffusion (gm), a key limitation to photosynthesis. The cell wall appears to play a crucial role in this reduction, yet the specific effect of cell wall compositions on gm and the underlying regulatory mechanisms of cell wall thickness (Tcw) variation are not well understood. In this study, we subjected cotton plants to varying levels of water deficit to investigate the impact of leaf cell wall composition and the arrangement patterns of microfibrils within cell walls on Tcw and leaf gas exchange.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) stands as the leading cause of dementia worldwide, and projections estimate over 150 million patients by 2050. AD prevalence is notably higher in women, nearly twice that of men, with discernible sex differences in certain risk factors. To enhance our understanding of how sex influences the characteristics of AD patients and its potential impact on the disease trajectory, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of demographic, clinical, cognitive, and genetic data from a sizable and well-characterized cohort of AD dementia patients at a memory clinic in Barcelona, Spain.
