Previous research highlights impairments in the recognition of facial expression of emotion in individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Relatives of people with ASD may exhibit similar, albeit subtler, impairments, referred to as the Broad Autism Phenotype (BAP). Recently, the Differential outcomes procedure (DOP) has been shown to enhance this ability in young adults using dynamic stimuli, with fewer intensity levels required to identify fear and surprise.

The most common transducers used to generate ultrasound in medical applications are based on short electrical pulses applied to piezoelectric transducers and capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers. However, piezoelectric transducers have a limited frequency bandwidth, defined by their physical thickness, and capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers have poor transmission efficiency. The high frequency cutoff limits the spatial resolution of ultrasonic images.

Single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) is a powerful tool for metallic nanoparticle (NP) characterisation in terms of concentration and, taking into account several assumptions, also size. However, this technique faces challenges, such as the intrinsic matrix effect, which significantly impact the results when analysing real complex samples. This issue is critical for the calculations of key SP-ICP-MS parameters ultimately altering the final outcomes.

Analysing samples in their original form is increasingly crucial in analytical chemistry due to the need for efficient and sustainable practices. Analytical chemists face the dual challenge of achieving accuracy while detecting minute analyte quantities in complex matrices, often requiring sample pretreatment. This necessitates the use of advanced techniques with low detection limits, but the emphasis on sensitivity can conflict with efforts to simplify procedures and reduce solvent use.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been recognised as potential biomarkers due to their specific expression patterns in different biological tissues and their changes in expression under pathological conditions. MicroRNA-122 (miR-122) is a vertebrate-specific miRNA that is predominantly expressed in the liver and plays an important role in liver metabolism and development. Dysregulation of miR-122 expression is associated with several liver-related diseases, including hepatocellular carcinoma and drug-induced liver injury (DILI).

Steryl esters (SE) are a storage pool of sterols that accumulates in cytoplasmic lipid droplets and helps to maintain plasma membrane sterol homeostasis throughout plant growth and development. Ester formation in plant SE is catalyzed by phospholipid:sterol acyltransferase (PSAT) and acyl-CoA:sterol acyltransferase (ASAT), which transfer long-chain fatty acid groups to free sterols from phospholipids and acyl-CoA, respectively. Comparative mass spectrometry-based metabolomic analysis between ripe fruits and seeds of a tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv Micro-Tom) mutant lacking functional PSAT and ASAT enzymes (slasat1xslpsat1) shows that disruption of SE biosynthesis has a differential impact on the metabolome of these organs, including changes in the composition of free and glycosylated sterols.

Therapies targeting human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer significantly impact patient outcomes, quality of life, and health care systems. While chemotherapy and trastuzumab improve survival in early-stage HER2-positive breast cancer, variability in clinical and biological characteristics leads to different response to therapies and outcomes. Clinical guidelines provide general recommendations, but significant uncertainty persists in identifying an optimal treatment plan for individual patients.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are the main enzymes handling bicarbonate in the different cell compartments. This study analyses the expression of CAs in roots of Arabidopsis thaliana demes differing in tolerance to bicarbonate: the tolerant A1 deme and the sensitive deme, T6. Exposure to 10 mM NaCl caused a transient depolarization of the root cell membranes, and in contrast, the supply of 10 mM NaHCO caused hyperpolarization.

The functional significance of brain asymmetry is still largely unknown. Studying the level of correlation of neuropeptide-degrading activities between subcellular fractions such as synaptosomal, of the left and right hemispheres of male rats during development and aging could provide relevant data on their functional role during these periods. The present study analyzes the level of correlation of a enkephalin- or angiotensin III-degrading activity, such as membrane-bound arginyl-aminopeptidase activity (M-B ArgAP) between the left versus right homogenate and/or synaptosomal subcellular fractions obtained and processed independently from both brain hemispheres during development and aging.
