Introduction: Proactive esophageal cooling reduces injury during radiofrequency (RF) ablation of the left atrium (LA) for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). New catheters are capable of higher wattage settings up to 90 W (very high-power short duration, vHPSD) for 4s. Varying power and duration however does not eliminate the risk of thermal injury.

We report here a new ligand for the peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor type α (PPARα), an N-tosyl hydrazone benzopyran that was designed throughout the mapping of the polar zone of the binding site of PPARα; such a compound displays a strong activity on this receptor that is comparable to that of the reference compound WY-14643. For the design of the -tosyl hydrazone benzopyran, we have carried out an exhaustive conformational study of WY-14643 and a previously reported hydrazine benzopyran derivative using conformational potential energy surfaces (PES). This study allowed us to map in a systematic way the entire binding site of the PPARα.

Peptides are attracting a growing interest for therapeutic applications in biomedicine. In Parkinson's disease (PD), different human endogenous peptides have been associated with beneficial effects, including protein aggregation inhibition, reduced inflammation, or the protection of dopaminergic neurons. Such effects seem to be connected to the spatial arrangement of peptide side chains, and many of these human molecules share common conformational traits, displaying a distinctive amphipathic and cationic helical structure, which is believed to be crucial for their activities.

In this work, the solubilization of hydrocarbons in type V HNADESs (non-ionic organic molecules) formed by mixing carvone, a natural monoterpenoid, with organic acids (hexanoic to decanoic acids) is examined by applying both experimental and theoretical approaches. The synthesis and physicochemical characterization of different HNADESs allowed us to tailor their properties, aiming for optimal interactions with desired hydrocarbons.

To contribute to this effort, we have conducted a combined experimental and theoretical study of the adsorption of cyanomethyl radicals (-CHCN) on this substrate below room temperature by performing scanning tunneling microscopy experiments and density functional theory simulations.
