Novel pH-sensitive polymeric photosensitizer carriers from the phthalocyanine (Pc) group were investigated as potential photodynamic therapy drugs for the treatment of breast cancer. Their high antiproliferative activity was confirmed by photocytotoxicity studies, which indicated their high efficacy and specificity toward the SK-BR-3 cell line. Importantly, the Pcs encapsulated in the polymeric nanoparticle (NP) carrier exhibited a much better penetration into the acidic environment of tumor cells than their free form.

The objectives of this study were: (i) to evaluate the associations between postpartum health disorders, relative increase in walking activity (RIWA) and expression of behavioral estrus intensity captured by pedometers; (ii) to assess associations between RIWA and pregnancy in cows submitted to timed artificial insemination (TAI). Lactating dairy cows (n = 881) were enrolled in the study. Cows were submitted to a 5d TAI protocol with insertion of a progesterone device.

Formation of water-in-water emulsions and microgels in nonionic surfactant + gelatin aqueous mixtures.

Institute of Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC), Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Jordi Girona, 18-26, 08034 Barcelona, Spain; Networking Research Center on Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN, ISCIII), Jordi Girona, 18-26, 08034 Barcelona, Spain. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study proposes that water-in-water (W/W) emulsions can be created by mixing a polymer and a surfactant, leading to phase segregation when the surfactant's cloud temperature is lowered.
  • Experiments involved using an ethoxylated triglyceride surfactant (Kolliphor ELP) with gelatin, where the gelatin reduced the surfactant's cloud temperature, allowing for two distinct aqueous phases to form.
  • The findings reveal that this is the first documented case of W/W emulsions formed with a polymer-surfactant mixture, achieving stability through chemically crosslinked microgels and the incorporation of mucin particles.

Department of Ecology and Coastal Management, Instituto de Ciencias Marinas de Andalucía (ICMAN-CSIC), Avda. República Saharaui, 2, Puerto Real, Cadiz, 11510, Spain; Associate Research Unit "Blue Growth", Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) - Andalusian Institute of Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training (IFAPA), Cadiz, Spain. Electronic address:

The variability in trophic position and carbon isotopic signatures can provide information about their dietary flexibility and its ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions. The impact of the invasive blue crab Callinectes sapidus was assessed by estimating its trophic position and isotopic niche using stable isotopes (δ³C, δ⁵N, δ³⁴S) across different invaded Atlantic coastal areas. This study, the first of its kind in the eastern Atlantic range, reveals the crab's omnivorous behavior with a wide trophic position (TP = 2-4), consistent with findings from its native range.

Mines Saint-Etienne, Univ Jean Monnet, Etablissement Francais du Sang, INSERM, U 1059 Sainbiose, Centre CIS, F-42023, Saint-Etienne, France. Electronic address:

The rise in minimally invasive procedures has created a demand for efficient and reliable planning software to predict intra- and post-operative outcomes. Surrogate modelling has shown promise, but challenges remain, particularly in cardiovascular applications, due to the complexity of parametrising anatomical structures and the need for large training datasets. This study aims to apply statistical shape modelling and machine learning for predicting stent deployment in real time using patient-specific models.

Objective: DESTINY-Breast03, a randomised, phase 3 trial, evaluated trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) versus trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) in patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2)-positive unresectable and/or metastatic breast cancer who progressed on or after treatment with trastuzumab and a taxane. At the current data cut off overall survival analysis, T-DXd demonstrated a substantial improvement in overall survival over T-DM1. This secondary analysis use of DESTINY-Breast03 aimed to further evaluate the treatment differences using quality-adjusted survival time without symptoms or toxicity (Q-TWiST) methods.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic pain affects many people, and Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is highlighted as a natural and safe pain management alternative that works through the endocannabinoid system, inflammation modulation, and immune regulation.
  • A meta-analysis of 18 randomized clinical trials with 1,196 patients was conducted to assess the effectiveness of PEA in reducing various types of pain, showing significant pain reduction at multiple time points (6, 8, and 24-26 weeks).
  • The analysis confirmed that PEA not only alleviates pain for nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic types but also improves overall quality of life, with benefits noticeable within the

Desalination of seawater by forward osmosis is a technology potentially able to address the global water scarcity problem. The major challenge limiting its widespread practical application is the design of a draw solute that can be separated from water by an energetically efficient process and then reused for the next cycle. Recent experiments demonstrate that a promising draw solute for forward-osmosis desalination is tetrabutylphosphonium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate ([P][TMBS]).

Controlling the light emitted by individual molecules is instrumental to a number of advanced nanotechnologies ranging from super-resolution bioimaging and molecular sensing to quantum nanophotonics. Molecular emission can be tailored by modifying the local photonic environment, for example, by precisely placing a single molecule inside a plasmonic nanocavity with the help of DNA origami. Here, using this scalable approach, we show that commercial fluorophores may experience giant Purcell factors and Lamb shifts, reaching values on par with those recently reported in scanning tip experiments.
