Understanding attitudes, knowledge, and use of e-health services in the health system in Spain.

The objective of this study was to understand factors that influence the attitude, knowledge, use, and access to e-health services in Spain. We examined the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics of participants and their attitudes toward, knowledge of and use of video-consultation, digital medical records, and experiences with digital devices. We conducted secondary data analysis using information collected by the Health Barometer # 8822 carried out by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas.

Insights into spinetail devil ray spatial ecology in the Mediterranean Sea through satellite telemetry.

To investigate the seasonal migratory behaviour of spinetail devil rays, Mobula mobular, across the Mediterranean Sea, we used satellite telemetry to track nine individuals between 2016 and 2021. The species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species and appears to be most vulnerable to fishing impacts when gathering in large assemblages. The only known targeted devil ray fishery harvests significant numbers each winter off Gaza.

Cortical areas associated to higher cognition drove primate brain evolution.

Although intense research effort is seeking to address which brain areas fire and connect to each other to produce complex behaviors in a few living primates, little is known about their evolution, and which brain areas or facets of cognition were favored by natural selection. By developing statistical tools to study the evolution of the brain cortex at the fine scale, we found that rapid cortical expansion in the prefrontal region took place early on during the evolution of primates. In anthropoids, fast-expanding cortical areas extended to the posterior parietal cortex.

Mass wasting reveals ongoing asymmetric retreat of the martian north polar ice cap.

Ongoing mass wasting through ice block falls is intensive at the north polar ice cap of Mars. We monitored how this activity is currently shaping the marginal steep scarps of the ice cap, which holds a record of the planet's climate history. With AI-driven change detection between multi-temporal high-resolution satellite images, we created a comprehensive map of mass wasting across the entire North Polar Layered Deposits (NPLD).

Novel adaptive immune systems in pristine Antarctic soils.

Antarctic environments are dominated by microorganisms, which are vulnerable to viral infection. Although several studies have investigated the phylogenetic repertoire of bacteria and viruses in these poly-extreme environments with freezing temperatures, high ultra violet irradiation levels, low moisture availability and hyper-oligotrophy, the evolutionary mechanisms governing microbial immunity remain poorly understood. Using genome-resolved metagenomics, we test the hypothesis that Antarctic poly-extreme high-latitude microbiomes harbour diverse adaptive immune systems.

Multi-platform diagnostic strategy and biosecurity as basis of contagious agalactia control programs in endemic areas.

Background: Control strategies against contagious agalactia (CA), considered one of the most important diseases affecting small ruminants in countries surrounding the Mediterranean, are mainly based on traditional strategies considered suboptimal such as the use of inactivated vaccines and antibiotics. This manuscript analysed the efficacy of an alternative non-mandatory official control programme based on a multi-platform diagnostic panel and biosecurity developed and started in 185 herds placed in a contagious agalactia endemic area of Spain, using the data of 74,080 samples collected and analysed during a 4 years-period (2018-2021).

Results: Globally, the combined analyses of bulk tank milk (BTM), ear or nasal swabs (in goats or sheep, respectively) and the serology to detect Mycoplasma agalactiae (Ma), allowed the detection of 40.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by progressive airflow obstruction and destruction of lung tissue, primarily attributed to tobacco smoking. However, other factors like biomass-burning smoke (BS) exposure are also implicated. COPD has been described as an accelerated aging disease, and telomere length is a biomarker of aging.

Clustering of obesogenic behaviours amongst 140 052 South American adolescents: a harmonized meta-analysis of national health surveys.

Background: Physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and diet synergically coexist (in different ways) within adolescents' lifestyles. Thus, understanding obesogenic behaviour patterns within populations is critical to promoting adolescents' health. Background: Public toilets enable populations, including those who menstruate, to move through public spaces. Menstrual Friendly Public Toilets (MFPT) are accessible, safe, and clean public toilets that provide those who menstruate the space and resources to navigate cities with dignity and comfort. However, there is little evidence on the status of MFPTs in urban centers.

Objective: To determine if wrist-worn sensor parameters can predict incident dementia in individuals aged 60 + years and to compare prediction with other tools.

Design: Observational cohort study.

Setting: Community PARTICIPANTS: The cohort comprised 47,371 participants without dementia, aged 60 + years, who participated in the UK Biobank study (mean age=67 ± 4 years; 52 % female).

Ethics and trustworthiness of artificial intelligence in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary surgery: a snapshot of insights from the European-African Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (E-AHPBA) survey.

Background: Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgery is a complex specialty and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications have the potential to improve pre- intra- and postoperative outcomes of HPB surgery. While ethics guidelines have been developed for the use of AI in clinical surgery, the ethical implications and reliability of AI in HPB surgery remain specifically unexplored.

Methods: An online survey was developed by the Innovation Committee of the E-AHPBA to investigate the current perspectives on the ethical principles and trustworthiness of AI in HPB Surgery among E-AHPBA membership.

Extracorporeal Photopheresis, a Therapeutic Alternative for T cell-mediated Rejection in Renal Transplantation.

T-cell mediated rejection (TCMR) in renal transplantation, although reduced by better immunosuppressants, still impacts graft survival. TCMR responds to methylprednisolone (MPL) in 60% to 70% of cases, with polyclonal anti-T-lymphocyte antibodies (ATGs) used for severe or corticoresistant cases. When ATG is contraindicated, extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) may be an alternative.

Use of SGLT2i in Non-Diabetic Kidney Transplant Recipients.

Background: The potential anti-proteinuric effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) is of special interest in kidney transplantation. Central nervous system vascular complications associated with the acute form of Steroid-Responsive Meningitis-Arteritis.

This retrospective study aims to describe the vascular events in the central nervous system (CNS) associated with the acute form of steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA), to compare the clinical features of dogs with and without such complications and to potentially identify predisposing factors for these events. Dogs with a presumptive diagnosis of SRMA visited between 2018 and 2023 with full medical records that underwent neurological examination, blood testing, cervical computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis were included. Thirty-three dogs were included and divided in two groups.

Enhanced porous titanium biofunctionalization based on novel silver nanoparticles and nanohydroxyapatite chitosan coatings.

Titanium is widely used for implants however it presents limitations such as infection risk, stress shielding phenomenon, and poor osseointegration. To address these issues, a novel approach was proposed that involves fabricating porous titanium substrates, to reduce implant stiffness, minimizing stress shielding and bone resorption, and applying polymeric coatings to improve bioactivity. Composite coating prepared from chitosan, silver nanoparticles, and nanohydroxyapatite was optimized to enhance antibacterial properties and promote osseointegration.

The PKA signaling pathway regulates the association of the autophagy initiation complex with the lipidation machinery.

A key step in autophagy is the conjugation by the E3-like Atg12-Atg5-Atg16 complex of the ubiquitin-like protein Atg8 to phosphatidylethanolamine on the autophagosomal membrane, a process known as lipidation. Previous work in yeast showed that recruitment of the E3-like complex to the preautophagosomal structure is mediated by the interaction of Atg16 with the phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate-binding protein Atg21, and by the association of Atg12 with the scaffold protein of the Atg1 kinase complex, Atg17. Here, we conducted a reverse two-hybrid screen to identify residues in Atg17 and Atg12 critical for Atg17-Atg12 binding, and used these data to generate a docking model of Atg12-Atg5-Atg16 with the Atg17 complex.
