Background: Incorporating ethics into clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) can be challenging. This is particularly evident for infectious diseases (ID) CPGs due to the complexity of ID ethics (IDE) and the multiplicity of populations at-risk for infections.

Objectives: The OPENING project (IncOrPorating Ethics iN ClINical Guidelines: Practical Indications) was initiated by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) Ethics Advisory Committee (EEAC) in collaboration with the ESCMID Guidelines Subcommittee to generate guidelines for the systematic inclusion of ethics principles into ID CPGs.

PBT/PMT assessment of active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The EU Commission proposal for a new EU pharmaceutical legislation considers PBT (persistence-bioaccumulation-toxicity) and PMT (persistence-mobility-toxicity) criteria for pharmaceuticals. Under current environmental risk assessment guidance, a PBT assessment is required regardless of the predicted environmental concentrations. However, consumption volumes of pharmaceuticals are contingent on marketing approval by EMA and are therefore predictable and their toxicological potency is established prior to any regulatory approval.

This article aims to provide a framework of logistical factors which deserve special consideration in the preparation of these patients for transfer.

Methods: Diagnostic study of patients under 15 years of age undergoing colonoscopy ± esophagogastroduodenoscopy for suspected inflammatory bowel disease between 2015-2022 in a pediatric hospital. Patients with normal biopsy and anatomopathological diagnosis of UC were included.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health challenge that affects patients, caregivers, healthcare systems, the environment and national economies. Despite its far-reaching impact, there is no framework to systematically evaluate national CKD prevention and management programmes or evaluate the societal burden of disease. This paper has two objectives: first, to introduce a comprehensive framework to assess national programmes, which recognises gaps and weaknesses and identifies feasible policy interventions to reduce overall CKD burden; second, to present some key challenges and success stories in delivering CKD services delivered in eight different country settings.

Nursing students' experiences of a service-learning programme with older adults living in poverty in a high-income country: A phenomenological study.

Aim: To understand the experiences of nursing students participating in a service-learning programme with older adults living in poverty in a high-income country.

Background: Nursing students should be competent in assessing the needs of older people living in poverty as well as in implementing and evaluating the effect of individualised health promotion interventions. Service-learning is a strategy that not only improves the biopsychosocial health of older adults, but also enables nursing students to acquire competence in promoting health and self-care among older adults living in poverty.

Triple inhaled therapy of formoterol/glycopyrrolate/budesonide reduces the use of oral corticosteroids and antibiotics during COPD exacerbations in real-world conditions.

Introduction: Triple inhaled therapy (TT) in one device has been shown in clinical trials to reduce exacerbations and in some cases mortality compared to dual inhaled therapy (DT) in one device in the population of moderate to very severe COPD patients and previous exacerbations. This evidence must be contrasted in real-world conditions.

Patients And Methods: Non-intervention retrospective cohort study comparing the incidence of moderate and severe exacerbations in COPD patients treated with TT (formoterol, glycopyrrolate and budesonide, 5mcg/72mcg/320mcg, n=112) and DT (LAMA/LABA/ or LABA/inhaled glucocorticoid, n=107) for 26 weeks under clinical practice conditions.

Cobalt-Zinc carbonaceous yolk-shell reactor enhances electron transfer in non-radical pathways: Electric potential concentration effect via bimetallic synergy.

Bimetallic catalysts have notable advantages in the field of persulfate activation owing to their intermetallic synergy. However, studies on stimulating the potential concentration effect through intermetallic coordination to enhance the electron transfer efficiency are limited. In this study, a cobalt (Co) and zinc (Zn) bimetallic yolk-shell structured high-efficiency peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalyst (Z67@8-HCNF) was prepared by the derivatization of metal-organic backbone materials and was found to produce significant synergistic interactions between Co and Zn metals, which could be utilized to trigger the potential concentration effect to enhance the intermolecular electron transfer efficiency and achieve efficient PMS activation.

Fluorescence-guided identification and dissection of retroperitoneal lymphomas (with video).

Surgery, especially if minimally invasive, still plays a role in the diagnosis of suspect lymphoproliferative lesions in challenging locations such as the retroperitoneum. Fluorescence guidance may help in such cases facilitating the visualization of highly vascularized lesions. Our recent experience with a 71-year-old woman with retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy and suspected lymphoma supports this hypothesis.

Anatomy, histology and ultrastructure of the adult human olfactory peduncle: Blood vessel and corpora amylacea assessment.

The mammalian olfactory system is responsible for processing environmental chemical stimuli and comprises several structures, including the olfactory epithelium, olfactory bulb, olfactory peduncle (OP), and olfactory cortices. Despite the critical role played by the OP in the conduction of olfactory information, it has remained understudied. In this work, optical, confocal, and electron microscopy were employed to examine the anatomy, histology, and ultrastructure of six human OP specimens (ages 37-84 years).

Exploring the associations of perceived physical literacy with depression, anxiety, and stress among Spanish adolescents.

Background And Purpose: The concept of physical literacy has gained prominence in the context of adolescent health, with increasing evidence suggesting its potential as a pivotal factor in promoting adolescent well-being and physical activity. The objective of the current study was to examine the relationships between perceived physical literacy (PPL) and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress in Spanish adolescents.

Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional study including 714 adolescents was conducted.

Modulatory effect of Echium plantagineum oil on the n-3 LC-PUFA biosynthetic capacity of chicken (Gallus gallus).

Poultry can be a sustainable source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) through the bioconversion of dietary alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3n-3). However, this process is currently limited by the high n-6/n-3 ratio in poultry diets affecting the competition between n-6 and n-3 fatty acids (FA) for the same biosynthetic enzymes, and the rate-limiting Δ6 desaturase which act at both, the first and final steps of DHA synthesis pathway. Echium plantagineum oil (EO) is an unusual source of stearidonic acid (SDA, 18:4n-3) which bypasses the first Δ6 desaturase step potentially increasing n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) synthesis.

Toxicity assessment of airborne ultrafine particles: Role of transport emissions.

Airborne quasi-ultrafine particle samples were collected from different outdoor sites in Barcelona (NE Spain, 35 samples) and the Valencia subway (about 400 km south of Barcelona, 3 samples). Locations and schedules were designed to cover cold and warm seasons and to represent the impact of different types of transport (cars, trains, ships, and planes). Extracts from PTFE filters (methanol:dichloromethane 1:2) were used to test toxic effects in human cell lines (Induction of reactive oxygen species, inflammatory response) and in zebrafish embryos (expression of xenobiotic response-related genes, cyp1a1, gsa1 and hao1).

Controlling As, Cd, and Pb bioaccumulation in rice under different levels of alternate wetting and drying irrigation with biochar amendment: A 3-year field study.

One challenging task to produce rice that comply with the increasing demanding regulations, is to reduce, simultaneously, grain bioaccumulation of As, Cd, and Pb. A 3-year field experiment was conducted in a Mediterranean environment, to evaluate the effects on As, Cd, and Pb bioaccumulation in rice grain, of the adoption of two levels of alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation conditions: moderate and intensive (reflooding at -20 kPa and -70 kPa soil matric water potential, respectively), relative to the traditional permanent flood irrigation. Plots were prepared with or without a one-time holm oak biochar application (35 Mg ha), in the first year of the study.

Self-limited cutaneous Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis: A case report.

Blueberry muffin baby syndrome is a condition initially described in 1960 to classify the cutaneous manifestations of newborns with rubella. Subsequently, congenital diseases related to TORCH syndrome and blood dyscrasias have been included under this syndrome. Among the conditions associated with this syndrome is Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, an uncommon condition with variable involvement of one or more organs, often affecting the skin.

Digital dietary interventions for healthy adolescents: A systematic review of behavior change techniques, engagement strategies, and adherence.

Background: Adolescence is a crucial phase for developing healthy eating habits with lifelong health implications. Digital interventions, such as smartphone apps and web platforms, have emerged as promising strategies to promote healthy eating habits among adolescents by using behavior change techniques (BCTs). This study aims to systematically review internet-based dietary interventions targeting adolescents, focusing on the analysis of BCTs employed, their delivery modes, and their impact on adolescents' adherence and engagement.

Transcriptomic analysis of sub-MIC Eugenol exposition on antibiotic resistance profile in Multidrug Resistant Enterococcus faecalis E9.8.

The spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria and their resistance genes along the food chain and the environment has become a global threat aggravated by incorrect disinfection strategies. This study analysed the effect of induction by sub-inhibitory concentrations of eugenol - a major ingredient in clove essential oil commonly used in disinfectant agents - on the phenotypic and genotypic response of MDR Enterococcus faecalis E9.8 strain, selected based on the phenotypic response of other enterococci.

Electrophisiological monitoring of pain in non-communicative critically ill patients.

Electrophysiological monitoring of pain provides objective measures that allow for pain control and adjustment of analgesia in non-communicative patients. Among the available electrophysiological devices, automated infrared pupillometry, Analgesia Nociception Index (ANI), and Nociception Level Index (NOL®) stand out. These non-invasive measurement systems analyze the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system response to painful stimuli by observing pupillary dilatation and reactivity (pupillometry), heart rate during respiration (ANI), or a combination of multiple parameters from the nociceptive-autonomic medullary circuit (NOL®).

Patterns of drug combinations used by men who have sex with men in Brazil.

Background: The practice of using drugs to modulate experiences is a well-documented phenomenon worldwide, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aims to describe patterns of drug combinations used by Brazilian MSM, embracing a detailed examination of the Brazilian context, which may inspire research elsewhere while enriching the global panorama on MSM drug use. By focusing on Brazilian MSM, the study sheds light on specific drug use combinations, which may help in the development of effective, culturally sensitive public health strategies.

BMP6 participates in the molecular mechanisms involved in APAP hepatotoxicity.

Given the lack of accurate diagnostic methods of acetaminophen (APAP)-induced acute liver failure (ALF), the search for new biomarkers for its diagnosis is an urgent need. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP6) in APAP-induced ALF progression and its potential value as a biomarker of ALF. Hepatic and circulating BMP6 expression was assessed in APAP-treated mice and in serum samples from patients with APAP overdose.
