Introduction Hip fractures in the elderly are considered one of the most common types of orthopedic injuries, associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The incidence has been increasing over the years, and its management has also caused a significant economic burden for most countries worldwide. This study aimed to determine the outcomes and economic costs associated with hip fractures in elderly patients at a tertiary care institution in Trinidad and Tobago.

Background: Consistent findings indicate that Theory of Mind (ToM) is impaired in schizophrenia (SZ). To investigate whether such deficits are trait- or state-dependent, we investigated if ToM is modified by clinical liability markers (such as basic symptoms and psychotic-like experiences), focusing on the analysis of unaffected siblings of individuals diagnosed with SZ.
Methods: The study included a total of 65 participants: 38 patients diagnosed with a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder and 27 healthy siblings.

This article presents a high-frequency characterization from 1 up to 10 GHz of electroplated conductive filaments in 3D printed microwave topologies. This study implements different microstrip lines and antennas to compare their performance as-is and with the electroplating process. The results for the microstrip lines show a significant decrease in losses for the electroplated devices, even reaching loss levels of pure copper devices.

Background: Complete pathological response to neoadjuvant treatment (NAT) in breast cancer is associated with prolonged survival. Compared to other breast cancer immunophenotypes, luminal tumors are the least chemosensitive with low rates of pathological response within this molecular subtype. Thus, finding predictors of response in this subset remains challenging.

Introduction: Although the diagnosis of tinea capitis is mainly microbiological, the risk of evolution towards cicatricial alopecia in the most severe cases requires empirical treatment based on physical examination and complementary examinations.
Methods: Two patients were evaluated by physical examination, cutaneous ultrasound and microbiological examination.
Results: Ultrasound showed follicular widening and increased vascularization in Doppler mode.

Unlabelled: A systematic review and meta-analysis examined the impact of gut microbiota in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. Dysbiosis may influence neurodegeneration by affecting gut permeability and neurotrophic factors, leading to cognitive decline. The study analyzed microbiome differences between patients with AD and healthy individuals, as well as the impact of various interventions in both preclinical and clinical studies.

The debate regarding the two possible roles of lymphadenectomy in surgical oncology, prognostic or therapeutic, is still ongoing. Furthermore, the use of lymphadenectomy as a proxy for the quality of the surgical procedure is another feature of discussion. Nevertheless, this reckoning depends on patient conditions, aggressiveness of the tumor, the surgeon, and the pathologist, and then it is not an absolute surrogate for the surgical quality.

Background: Rheumatology has experienced notable changes in the last decades. New drugs, including biologic agents and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, have blossomed. Concepts such as window of opportunity, arthralgia suspicious for progression, or difficult-to-treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have appeared; and new management approaches and strategies such as treat-to-target have become popular.

Background: The 313-variant polygenic risk score (PRS) provides a promising tool for clinical breast cancer risk prediction. However, evaluation of the PRS across different European populations which could influence risk estimation has not been performed.
Methods: We explored the distribution of PRS across European populations using genotype data from 94,072 females without breast cancer diagnosis, of European-ancestry from 21 countries participating in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC) and 223,316 females without breast cancer diagnosis from the UK Biobank.

Background: Visceral leishmaniosis (VL) is the most severe form of human leishmaniosis, with an estimated 95% case fatality if left untreated. Dogs act as peridomestic reservoir hosts for the protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum, a causative agent for human leishmaniosis, endemic throughout the Mediterranean basin. To assure consistent and accurate surveillance of canine infection and prevent transmission to people, consistent diagnosis of canine L.

Introduction: Obesity constitutes a global public health problem, and knowledge about drug dosing in obese patients is limited. Clinical trials in critically ill patients rarely include obese individuals, resulting in a lack of specific dosing information in product data sheets. The aim of this literature review is to provide clinicians with efficient and safe guidelines for this group of patients.

Introduction: Total hip arthroplasty has been associated with the onset of low back pain, which can significantly impact patients' quality of life. However, a detailed evaluation of the time until the onset of long-term low back pain following total hip arthroplasty remains largely unknown. This study aimed to explore the relationship between total hip arthroplasty and the development of long-term lower back pain.

The increasing use of lithium (Li) in modern technology and medicine has raised up concerns in the scientific community due to the potential impact of this metal on the aquatic environment. Although several effects have been reported in different organisms, there is still scarce information concerning the mechanisms and chronic effects of Li toxicity in marine life. Our main objective is to determine biological effects of sub-lethal concentrations in Mytilus galloprovincialis at different biological organization levels using the biomarker approach.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of lebrikizumab-treated patients at 52 weeks who did not achieve the ADvocate1 and ADvocate2 protocol-defined response criteria (≥75% improvement in the Eczema Area and Severity Index [EASI 75] or Investigator Global Assessment [IGA] 0/1 with ≥2-point improvement without rescue medication) after 16 weeks.
Methods: This analysis includes observed data for patients who received lebrikizumab every 2 weeks during the induction period, did not achieve the protocol-defined response, and subsequently received open-label lebrikizumab treatment.

The rate of success of epilepsy surgery, ensuring seizure-freedom, is limited by the lack of epileptogenicity biomarkers. Previous evidence supports the critical role of functional connectivity during seizure generation to characterize the epileptogenic network (EN). However, EN dynamics is highly variable across patients, hindering the development of diagnostic biomarkers.

Objectives: The objective was to estimate the excess formal social costs or direct non-healthcare costs of dementia-related neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS).
Methods: The presence of dementia, NPS, antipsychotic and/or antidepressant use, somatic and psychiatric comorbidities, and formal social benefits were studied in a region-wide cohort of all over-60-year-olds. A random forest-based algorithm identified NPS and two-part regression models and entropy balance were used.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most lethal and common form of pancreatic cancer, it has no specific symptoms, and most of the patients are diagnosed when the disease is already at an advanced stage. Chemotherapy typically has only a modest effect, making surgery the most effective treatment option. However, only a small percentage of patients are amenable to surgery.
